In-ground sprinkler systems can be one of the largest sources of outdoor water use. If you have one, these tips can help you reduce waste and use water more efficiently.
Tip #4: Try the “tuna can test” to avoid overwatering
1. Place empty can on lawn.
2. Run sprinklers for 15 min.
3. Measure water collected.
4. Calculate run time needed to collect 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water.
5. Adjust your watering time.
Lawns only need 2.5 cm of water a week.
Tip #5: Skip watering when it rains
Turn off your sprinkler system during or after rain. Upgrade to a smart controller or soil moisture sensor to automatically skip watering when it’s wet.
