The movement wanted to start a conversation that could lead to better consumer protection laws with respect to games that become inaccessible due to a variety of issues (DRM, live service, unfair TOS, etc).
Pirate Software, aka Thor, did a stream and made a video approx 10 months ago where he seemingly misunderstood aspects of the movement, which inadvertantly mislead a lot of people about it and seems to have played a big role in hurting it.
Now the movement is on its final stretch and seems to be headed for failure and folks are mad at Pirate Software and he hasn't acknowledged where he got aspects of the movement wrong.

Helldivers 2 is everything I wanted and more.
The combat is bombastic, guns feel punchy, sound is fantastic, and you can drop your pod on enemies and laugh as you blow up your friends.
I don’t think I stopped smiling and laughing for 3 hours. They absolutely nailed it.
