It is an important mechanism to maintain Bitcoin's scarcity and prevent inflation. When Bitcoin was created, its protocol established that a maximum of 21 million Bitcoins could ever be created. Halving occurs through a series of events where the block reward given to miners for discovering new blocks in the blockchain is reduced by half. Initially, miners were rewarded with 50 Bitcoins per block. The first halving took place in November 2012, reducing the reward to 25 Bitcoins per block. As the total supply of Bitcoin increases, the scarcity of Bitcoin increases, which can lead to an increase in its value.
