Mehdi re-writing history of course. As reminder, Begin wasn't PM of Israel then, but here the actual facts Mechdi, since you aren't fond of facts:
EGYPT
- Jordan and Egypt sign a defense pact in May 1967. Then Egypt signed one with Syria and Iraq that month.
- Egypt kicked the UN peacekeepers out of the Sinai that had been there since 1956. Arab armies began to mass on the Israeli borders.
- Egypt moved around 100,000 troops into the Sinai along Israels border. Iraq forces enter Jordan.
- Egypt closed the Straits of Tiran, enforcing a blockade of Israel, not allowing any ships to enter their red sea port of Eliat.
- Naval blockades are often considered acts of war under international law
- Egyptian President Nasser at the time:
“We knew the closing of the Gulf of Aqaba meant war with Israel … the objective will be Israel’s destruction.”
And then Nasser declared the day before the war broke out in June:
“The armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon are poised on the borders of Israel… To face the challenge, while standing behind us are the armies of Iraq, Algeria, Kuwait, Sudan and the whole Arab Nation. This act will astound the world. Today they will know that the Arabs were arranged for battle, the crucial hour has arrived. We have reached the stage of serious action and not declaration.”
Voice of the Arabs Radio in Cairo ran proclamations that Israel will be liquidated on May 16, 1967: “The existence of Israel has continued for too long. The battle has come in which we shall destroy Israel.” That same day, Egypt demanded the removal of the UN forces.
On May 19th, 1967 Cairo radio: “This is our chance. Arabs, to deal Israel a mortal blow of annihilations”
SYRIA
Damascus Radio (State Run) was running commentary how the end of the State of Israel was near: “Arab masses, this is your day, rush to the battlefield, let them know that we shall hang the last imperialist soldier with the entrails of the last Zionist.”
President Hafiz al-Assad of Syria proclaimed before the war: “This will be a war of annihilation .. strike the enemy’s settlements, turn them into dust, pace the Arab roads with the skulls of the Jews. Strike them without mercy.”
JORDAN
- On May 30, King Hussein placed Jordanian forces under Egyptian control, Iraqi and Saudi forces were sent into Jordan.
- Hoping to keep Jordan out of the war, Israel sent several messages to King Hussein promising not to attack if it stayed out.
- Jordan then began shelling Israel, fired into residential areas, over 6,000 shells fired, Israel still didn’t respond hoping it to be just face saving.
- Jordanian air force then launched a full assault on Israel
AFTER THE WAR
- Israel accepted UN SC Resolution 242 that called for land for peace
- Arabs & PLO all rejected 242 and in Khartoum issued their 3 NOs:
- No peace with Israel
- No negotiations with Israel
- No recognition of Israel
And those are the facts. That's why there was war in 1967, and that is why there wasn't a Palestinian state created in its immediate aftermath. Not to mention between 1949 and 1967 Egpyt and Jordan could have created a Palestinian state at any time ... they didn't. And the "Palestinians" didn't push for one.
