Some people may disagree - but transporting ziplock bags of marijuana & a digital scale in your backpack does not make you an essential traveler in the eyes of the Transit police. Hopping a turnstile while doing so didn’t help either. Nice grab by our District 1 team!

In calendar year 2023, NYPD cops made over 13,600 arrests in the subway system. Of these 13,600 arrests, 124 people were arrested 5 or more times in the subway system in 2023 alone. When looking further, these 124 people combined, have been arrested over 7,500 times in their lifetimes. So, in case you’re curious what your cops are doing … well … they’ve arrested these people over 7,500 times!  The better questions are … where is the accountability & consequences for these repeat offenders? How is this happening? Look no further than the other stakeholders in the justice system … prosecutors, judges, and city & state lawmakers … whose decisions, in large part, determine the outcomes and consequences for every arrest we make and whose decisions have such far reaching impact on the safety of our subway system. With that said, make no mistake about it, your @NYPDnews cops remain focused and steadfast in their commitment to advancing public safety.

Facts matter. Kudos to our cops for confronting unlawful behavior & acts of lawlessness head on. It’s what law abiding NY’ers expect, demand, & to be quite frank, deserve.
Our office has reached out to NYPD Transit District 30 about this cruel incident on the 7th Avenue F/G Station. This sort of violent broken windows policing does nothing to keep us safe. Assaulting someone for skipping a turnstile is an abuse of power by the NYPD.

When people question the value of fare evasion enforcement - look no further than THIS example. A convicted murderer (on parole) was packing heat when he beat the subway fare yesterday. He apparently didn’t get the memo that the NYPD is hyper focused on transit safety. He also didn’t get the memo that law-abiding New Yorkers are fed up with open lawlessness at the turnstiles. Well…how’d that work out for him? Jermaine Greene, a gun-toting repeat offender entered a Bronx subway station last night without paying the fare. Your dedicated cops from Transit District 11 confronted him and recovered this loaded ghost gun and felony-weight crack cocaine. We’ve been vocal. The public’s been vocal. Subway safety begins at the turnstiles, and our efforts to prevent disorder and lawlessness at the fare gates remains an important part of our overall public safety strategy. Whether it’s good old fashion subway policing or the embrace of innovative technology, the NYPD will remain steadfast in keeping weapons and dangerous criminals out of our subways. New Yorkers deserves nothing less.

When well over 100+ people enter a subway station at the same time, with some yelling and chanting, some acting disorderly, and some entering illegally by “jumping the turnstile”, I’d say it’s only appropriate that the police get involved to determine what is going on, to maintain order and to correct lawless behavior. Imagine our cops didn’t?   Law abiding riders deserve & expect nothing less. Here’s some good advice to protestors when using the subway system  “just trying to move from one location to another safely,” — pay your fare, act orderly, and do not partake in any unlawful activity. Activity like that causes delays and will get you arrested. That said, kudos to the cops on scene! Well done!

For those romanticizing the protests occurring on college campuses, “Death to America!” is one sentiment that runs counter to what we believe in, what we stand for, and what many have fought for on behalf of this country. 🇺🇸 And if you think the words written on this piece of paper are disturbing … you should hear the vile, disgusting, hateful, & threatening words coming out of the mouths of far too many of these so called “peaceful protestors.” @NYPDnews @NYPDChiefPatrol @NYPDDaughtry @NYPD1stDep @NYPDPC @NYPDChiefOfDept
This morning, @nyuniversity & @TheNewSchool requested @nypdnews to clear protesting students on their grounds. “Options” were afforded to the student protesters, with some leaving and 56 choosing arrest. There were no incidents, nor injuries to report. Once again the NYPD was extremely professional in their response! However, as we have been stating for the past 2 weeks, there is an underlying radical indoctrination of some of these students. Vulnerable and young people being influenced by professional agitators. Who is funding and leading this movement? We found numerous disturbing pieces of literature in both encampments but wanted to highlight this most disturbing one, clearly stating: “Death to America !” Watch this:

If anyone is curious what your NYPD cops are doing … well … they’re doing their jobs! They’ve arrested these 38 individuals a combined total of 1,126 times! The better question is why are they forced to arrest these people so many times & where are the consequences for their repeated illegal actions? Know this, the NYPD does NOT determine and/or impose consequences. That is the responsibility of the other stakeholders in the criminal justice system (lawmakers, judges, prosecutors). NY’ers deserve better.
Last year, 38 individuals accounted for assaulting 60 @NYCTSubway employees. Those 38 individuals have been arrested 1,126 times combined. @NYCMayor & @NYPDTransit spoke with @ABC7NY this morning about the realities of crime & recidivism in the subway system. Watch below ⬇️

Assembly Member — Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Know this — the officers you see in this photo are all part of the enhanced supplemental police coverage we have deployed into the subway system to advance public safety (and it’s working - crime was down 15% in February). We have been talking about this for weeks now. This location was chosen as a “meeting point” (one of many) where our cops start their tours. Once they arrive there, they are then accounted for, given their assignments, and report to post. This is far from a “resource allocation problem.” This is called efficient, smart, and effective policing. Policing done by the finest cops in the world! It’s also what our riders want, demand, and deserve.

For a man who devoted 41 years of service to New York City, one would be forgiven to think Chief Gerald Nelson was a man of the western frontier - rarely without his signature cowboy boots and calling colleagues “young buck.” To have the Chief refer to you by that moniker was a badge of honor. And as a young police executive privileged to serve under his direct command for nearly half a decade, it was a nickname worn with pride. Chief Nelson was a giant of a figure in the NYPD, and those under his tutelage came to appreciate his strong command presence balanced against the hidden jokester that he was. To say he was a “character” would be an understatement. Chief Nelson was amongst the best leaders I worked for, firmly conveying expectations but knowing when a lighthearted touch was necessary - a management style that upon reflection, I undoubtedly mimic to some degree. Chief Gerald Nelson’s untimely passing is a gut punch to all who knew him and to all who adored him. I count myself lucky to have known him as the boss, but also as a friend and fellow “young buck.” Rest in Peace Chief.

A career felon found himself back on the wrong side of the law this morning when a train patrol team saw a gun peeking out of his waistband - its recovery all the more easier because the man was asleep. Sharp eyes, a quick apprehension, and a gun off the streets. Well done TD-20!

Seconds after a 28-year-old repeat offender snatched the wallet of an elderly man almost 50 years his senior at the subway turnstiles, our District 4 team had the culprit in custody. The suspect was charged with Grand Larceny & Possession of Stolen Property & released with a DAT.

We’re just 2 weeks into 2022 and a man has already been arrested 4 times in Manhattan (twice for robbery & twice for theft) - the latest as a result of great District-level investigative work to help close a subway robbery within 48 hours. Great follow-up by our District 3 NCOs.

Transit officers patrolling a Washington Heights subway station confronted a man committing a subway violation and immediately recognized him as a suspect wanted for 2 felony assault incidents on the street. Great awareness & a quick apprehension by our District 3 NCOs.

Another example of a seemingly minor enforcement encounter becoming so much more. Kudos to our ATU officers for confronting a turnstile jumper in Manhattan, only to recognize him as the man wanted for the unprovoked assault of an elderly straphanger in Queens. Well done team.

Before passing judgment on our officers based on a snippet of video that only shows the final moments of a long struggle with a violent parolee, please view this video of the incident in its entirety.
(1/3) On Tuesday, 2/16 as police were escorting the suspect for smoking on the platform out of the transit system, the suspect attacked the officers on the stairs. The suspect ends up on top of one of the officers, assaults the officer, as the other officers fight back.

Holy smokes! When your Transit cops stopped a man for vaping in the subway, they learned he was wanted for a 2020 murder on a Queens sidewalk. Thanks to the District 34 NCO team’s quality-of-life-work, that's one less dangerous person riding our subway. nypost.com/2024/01/15/metro/…

We are aware of a video that has surfaced on various social media platforms showing an individual kicking a fellow subway rider in the Bronx. Our @NYPDDetectives are on the case and actively investigating this heinous assault.

When TD-11 Officers Sosa & Bove saw a boy boarding a train by himself in the Bronx, they knew something was awry. After a brief talk, they learned the special-needs child left home w/o permission. A stop at a hospital to get checked out & the boy was soon reunited with grandma.

From commercial robbery to shoplifting, a repeat offender’s done it all in 2022. Thankfully his streak of victimizing NYers came to an end on the 6-train when our District 12 train patrol officers stepped in to arrest the man, moments after he robbed a straphanger of her money.
