Three individual thunder storm cells close together are about to move over Staten Island, southern Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Not severe but expect momentary moderate to heavy rain. Begin to find indoor shelter. NYC.gov/beready for Thunderstorms
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible across the city this evening. A few could turn strong, bringing gusty winds, small hail, and brief heavy rain. Most of the day stays dry, but a quick storm could drop half an inch or more in under an hour, enough to cause localized flash flooding and bring down tree branches. Storms are forecast to be brief.

For you and your family’s safety, if you are outdoors, know where you will take shelter and head inside when you hear thunder or receive a warning on your phone. Watch for ponding on roadways and never drive through a flooded street, or enter or remain in a flooding basement.

The heat is not over. Highs today reach 100 to 105 degrees, with heat index values between 107 and 115. An Air Quality Alert is also in effect until 11 PM for ground-level ozone, so people in sensitive groups should limit strenuous activity outdoors and take breaks in cooler, shaded, or air-conditioned spaces.

Dangerous heat continues today. Max heat index values are expected to reach 110-115 for most, which is higher than yesterday. This level of heat can be deadly for those without adequate cooling and hydration. Temperatures are already in the upper 80s to low 90s across the area!

The heat today is extremely dangerous and prolonged. The forecast highs in the 100s are just the temperatures for the *shade.* Step into direct sun and it will be far worse. NYCEM is tracking and coordinating the City’s response to this heat event around the clock and directing New Yorkers to cool, safe places across the five boroughs. Have a plan. Gather supplies now before the worst heat comes in the afternoon. Stay informed. Find a cooling center near you: on.nyc.gov/coolingcenters
An extreme heat warning is in effect through Independence Day. Expect temperatures to reach the 100s today, and heat index values (humidity + heat) as high as 115F. Visit heat.gov for more information on how to stay safe during these conditions.
