Since 1974, the Native Women's Association of Canada has advocated for Indigenous women, girls & gender-diverse people. We brought the #MMIWG crisis to light.
Joyce Echaquan went to the hospital for medical help. Instead, she was told she’s stupid, only good for sex and she would be better off dead as she pleaded for help before dying. This racism in the health care system is deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

Change requires action and education ✊🏽✊🏾.
What a hurtful and disappointing statement. A genocide was committed against Indigenous people, against our children. Where is the pride in raising Canada’s flags? @erinotoole, we ask you to retract your statement and think about the impact of your words. ow.ly/LKAB50FYVZL
These are nothing less than genocide camps and today we reiterate our demand to have the federal government and the churches involved criminally charged. 2/2 thestar.com/news/canada/2021…
NWAC seeks to extend sincere congratulations to @briglacquette on being the only First Nations woman to make 🇨🇦 Olympic hockey team in history. Our Indigenous women, girls & Two-Spirit people have an #Indigenous role model to look up to in this year’s Olympics. #PyeongChang2018
Our hearts break for this latest discovery. These cannot be called residential schools. Schools are places we send our children to be educated, respected and cared for. 1/2
Happy National Ribbon Skirt Day! Today is a day to celebrate and honour Indigenous women across Canada by wearing traditional regalia. Let's use this day as an opportunity to learn about Indigenous traditions and cultures. #NationalRibbonSkirtDay#NWAC#indigenousculture

The horror of 215 First Nation’s children’s bodies found buried near a BC residential school is beyond comprehension. And to those who slough it off as “ancient history”, shame on you.
We are horrified by the discovery of 751 unmarked graves at the Marieval school in Saskatchewan. Today, we’re writing to the Attorney General of Canada to demand that charges be laid in the deaths of Indigenous children at residential schools. 1/3
The ongoing US investigation found marked and unmarked burial sites at the locations of 53 former Indigenous residential schools.

Every June 21, Indigenous peoples across Canada are joined in solidarity to celebrate #IndigenousPeoplesDay The summer solstice – the longest day of the year – is an important symbol for our people. The creation stories we tell focus on the human relationship to our world.
With Halloween this weekend, we would like to remind everyone that Indigenous people are not a costume. Pocahontas, Cowboys and "Indians", and our regalia are not costumes. Our culture is not a costume.
As communities in Canada and the US continue to search #ResidentialSchools, all Indigenous people must have access to support that is grounded in culture, and trauma-informed approaches, as we face more evidence of the traumatic and painful findings. 2/2

We’re delighted with the appointment of Mary Simon, Canada's first #Inuit#GovernorGeneral. Eminently qualified, Ms. Simon has shown a commitment to human rights, and Indigenous issues. The perspective she will bring to the role is an important step towards reconciliation.

Every year, on Oct. 4th, NWAC calls for transformational change to end the genocide of #MMIWG. Every year, we seem to go unheard by the Canadian government. This cycle cannot go on. We must see immediate change to end this systemic violence.

We are horrified by Brian Pallister & Alan Lagimodiere trying to defend Residential Schools. This system was made to violently assimilate Indigenous peoples. That a government could defend this practice, especially in light of the recoveries of unmarked graves, is appalling.
Today, at 12pm on Parliament Hill NWAC will be gathering with other groups to support the 20th anniversary of the Sisters in Spirit initiative. We look forward to standing united with friends, families and survivors.
As we pause today in remembrance, we urge you not to forget Indigenous veterans. Many Indigenous people fought beneath a flag that did not always protect them, and did not afford them the same freedoms they fought for. #RemembranceDaytgam.ca/3mRzU3T

Prior to colonization, many First Nations were matrilineal. Then, the Indian Act stipulated that to be an “Indian” one either had to be an Indian male or the child or wife of an Indian male. This deprived First Nations women of their agency. We must honour Indigenous women.
