As a professor of Black History and Cultural Sociology, I find it appalling that a healthcare provider would make such blatantly racist comments toward a Black pregnant patient. Blaming individuals for systemic morbidity rates faced by people of color is not only grossly irresponsible, but it also reflects deep-seated ignorance of the structural inequalities in healthcare. We must hold professionals to higher standards, especially in fields as critical as maternal health. I’ll gladly be finding this person and trying to get her to file a report against him to the medical board of Arizona for this racist statement alone.
