This is what our President who is blind said about the bus stop design where you step off the bus onto a narrow bus boarder next to a cycle lane on Lea Bridge Road, Waltham Forest
‘Not fit for purpose. It really is totally inaccessible. These sorts of designs should be scrapped’
WARNING: We filmed at the Elephant & Castle Floating bus stop late last month. The clip includes a rental e-bike rider crashing into a child. The floating bus stop designs are not safe & they need to be urgently halted please.
Please stop riding through red lights when pedestrians have the green man to cross the road. These crossings have rotating cones underneath the push button box to alert blind people when it’s safe to cross & it’s not safe when people ride through them on a red light at any speed.
Farringdon Street by the Italian Embassy, London. It’s a 2-way cycle lane bus stop bypass. Cyclists are seen not stopping for pedestrians at zebra crossing & riding over it while pedestrians are crossing. When some did stop, 1 carried on past 2 pedestrians on the zebra crossing.
WARNING We've been filming the chaotic & downright dangerous situation at the Westminster Bridge floating bus stop at St Thomas' hospital. Clip includes a speeding cyclist crashing into an elderly person. These designs are not safe & they need to be urgently halted @Mark_J_Harper
@Mark_J_Harper ‘I think what you are proposing is absolutely disgraceful & despicable. How dare you decide who can & who cannot travel. How dare you decide to use your power & authority to make travel inaccessible for me. Guards on trains are vital’ Kevin, who is blind @RMTunion
This shows the chaotic & dangerous situation facing bus users at Westminster floating bus stop. The buses routinely drops off into the cycle lane. A rental e-bike rider collides into a child & another one crashes into the back of a cyclist. @MayorofLondon this is not safe at all.
We would like to invite the Rt Hon @RishiSunak@10DowningStreet to join @newdawn75 on a train journey from Narborough to Leicester with her Guide Dog Nellie to witness how important ticket offices & train guards are. We are ready to go when you are Prime Minister. @RMTunion
Warning 3 pedestrian cycle collisions.
Floating bus stops are not working. Routing cycle lanes through the pavement at bus stops has to stop @LordPeterHendy Access has to be direct from the pavement without having to cross a cycle lane first. They are dangerous & chaotic places.
Our petition to stop ticket offices closing down & to keep guards on all trains was hand delivered to @RishiSunak@10DowningStreet by @newdawn75 &🦮 Nellie today. The petition now has 119 supporting organisations & we want the Prime Minister to urgently act on it please @RMTunion
The new pavement layout on #LeithWalk in #Edinburgh is not safe or accessible for blind & visually impaired pedestrians. Cyclists & pedestrians should not be expected to share the same space. Cycle lanes should not be put behind pedestrian crossings, it is a dangerous design.
Went back to the green man pedestrian crossing at St Thomas’ Hospital. Nothing has changed. How can anybody think riding through a pedestrian crossing on a red light is acceptable? Close passing people or making them run, step back or wait to cross on a green man is wrong.
Routing cycle lanes through the pavement at bus stops has to stop. Floating bus stops are not safe or accessible for blind people. Access has to be from the kerbside, direct from the pavement without having to cross a cycle lane first. This is at Elephant & Castle in London.
‘The tragedy is that visually impaired people are ending up at the bottom of the pile & are designed out of the environment’ Andrews words about a pavement-less bus stop on the new Lea Bridge Road cycle lane in London. @LouHaigh@simonlightwood we need urgent help on this issue.
Went back to Park Lane floating bus stops in London. They are still not working. Riders are not stopping at the zebra crossings, bus shelters are separate from the bus stops & the island platform is too narrow for people waiting for & getting off bus. They are not fit for purpose
Something needs to be done in London. Cycling through pedestrian crossings on a green man is being normalised as acceptable behaviour when it is not. Please can something be done about this behaviour, as it cannot be allowed to continue. Filmed opposite St Thomas’ Hospital.
@ChrisClarksonMP this is Kevin from Middleton who will not be able to travel if guards are taken off trains. Pls ask @Mark_J_Harper to stop his modernisation plans which will cause discrimination & prevent blind, visually impaired & disabled people travelling by train @RMTunion
ALT Kevin standing on Mills Hill train station platform with his white cane and a placard which reads ‘We need guards on all trains at all times’.
Please no more bus stop bypasses. Cycle lanes sandwiched in between the pavement & bus stop are not safe for blind, visually impaired, disabled & vulnerable bus passengers. Direct access from the pavement to & from the #bus is needed. Filmed 25/03/22 #London#BusNetworkInLondon
We urgently need the bus stop back to the pavement please, with no cycle lane sandwiched in between the pavement and bus stop. It is not safe or accessible for blind or visually impaired people. We need to be able to access public transport and get where we need to go please.
Kevins message @RishiSunak@10DowningStreet when handing in our petition supported by 150+ organisations from across UK ‘We are all entitled to travel regardless. We should not be discriminated against. It is vital guards are left on trains & ticket offices remain open’ @RMTunion
The pause on floating bus stops by @LordPeterHendy@simonlightwood is for shared use bus borders as shown in the video, where passengers board & alight the bus directly from & into the cycle lane. This pause needs to be made permanent, along with all types of floating bus stops.
Petition on safety & accessibility at bus stops handed in @10DowningStreet supported by 160+ organisations on Tuesday. We want bus passengers to get on & off the bus directly from the pavement, without having to cross or step into a cycle lane. Petition also handed in for new PM.
.@YvetteCooperMP you need to do something urgently please as this is ridiculous. Red light jumping by cyclists, e-bike & e-scooter riders is endemic. This is blatant, dangerous & reckless behaviour with complete disregard for the need to stop at pedestrian crossings. Please act.
Went back to film the floating bus stops at Park Lane in London. They are still not working & will never work for blind people. Access to & from the bus has to be direct from the pavement without having to cross or step into a cycle lane first. We need help please @Keir_Starmer.
Went back to London again and this is what was found. Dockless e-bikes & e-scooters blocking pavements & causing trip hazards. Making the pavements an absolute nightmare for anyone trying to get where they need to go. This is not working, it’s not safe & it needs to stop please.
.@MayorofLondon we sincerely ask you to withdraw from Streatham Hill Scheme and re-design it please. These floating bus stops are not safe or accessible for blind people.
@Mark_J_Harper ‘If they were to take guards off trains I definitely wouldn’t be able to use this station. I would be at the mercy of the gap and if I was to miss my step then I am afraid it could be curtains. We must have guards at all times’ Kevin at Mills Hill Station @RMTunion
We are heading to 10 Downing St on Mon 20 Feb to hand in our petition. To keep guards on all trains & keep ticket offices open. We will be joined by 10 organisations who want the same for disabled / women’s safety & all rail passenger safety winvisibleblog.wordpress.com…. @RMTunion
Floating bus stops in Park Lane, London. This is dangerous. The bus stops are not fit for purpose. The zebra crossings are like chocolate fireguards, they do not work. It is essential access to & from the bus is direct from the pavement without having to cross a cycle lane first.
We need help please to ‘Stop Shapps in his Tracks’ for our Petition on Safety, Security & Accessibility at All Train Stations in the UK. @newdawn75 explains why we are petitioning & how to support it is given here nfbuk.org/nfbuk-petition-on-… Open to charities, groups or organisations
This is Nuneaton train station where there is a poster in the corner of the train ticket office about the consultation. I asked at the ticket office for information in braille, audio, large print, easy read & sign language. None was available. The consultation is a sham @RMTunion
@newdawn75 explains why black cabs are important in London ‘It’s because they are accessible, drivers help you, they are easy to get in & out, there is lots of space for 🦮Nellie. Sarah is disgusted black cabs do not have access to all areas. This need to change. #CabsAcrossBank
This is at Leamington Spa Train Station, where it is proposed the ticket office will close. I asked at the ticket office for information in braille, audio, large print, easy read & sign language. None was available. The consultation is a sham & it needs to be halted. @RMTunion
It will be like a strike day everyday if the proposed changes are pushed through. With no guards on trains blind, visually impaired & disabled people will be staying at home unable to travel by train. This is what discrimination looks like. @RMTunion
Our President Andrew, who is blind, visited the Markhouse Road & Lea Bridge Road junction in Waltham Forest “Well I am actually speechless. It really is extremely inaccessible. They’re ignoring the needs of pedestrians. They are definitely ignoring the needs of disabled people.”
This is why shared space pavements do not work. Filmed on #SauchiehallStreet#Glasgow. The new street layout brings pedestrians & cyclists into direct conflict. Please stop using this design. It is not safe or accessible for blind or visually impaired pedestrians. #ActiveTravel
Warning cyclist pedestrian collide. Bus stop bypasses involve routing a cycle track through the pavement behind the bus stop, the majority of people riding bikes & e-micromobility devices take priority. These are not safe or accessible for blind people. Filmed St Thomas’ Hospital
‘Expecting a station like Birmingham to have no ticket office is absolutely bonkers’
#Birmingham is the UK’s second city & they want to close all ticket office windows at this station. @RMTunion
Petition handed into @Keir_Starmer yesterday to halt anymore floating bus stops as the Bus Services (No2) Bill Committee @HouseofCommons meets for the 1st time today, with this message from Hyacinth ‘The Bus Bill as it stands will not work for people like myself - blind people’
Our message to @Keir_Starmer to mark the ‘International White Cane Safety Day’ during our petition hand in @10DowningStreet calling for an immediate moratorium on any more floating bus stops & shared use bus boarders in cycle lanes please, backed by 290+ supporting organisations
The loss of amenity for blind & visually impaired people to use the bus independently in Londons active travel schemes is discrimination. The use of floating bus stops & shared use bus boarders has to stop. Access to & from the bus has to be direct from the pavement please.
Been back to St Thomas’ Hospital a couple of times in London. Many bikes, escooters, ebikes & tuk tuks were witnessed been ridden straight through the red light on the crossing when pedestrians were trying to cross the road. This is not safe. It needs to stop in 2024 please.
We went to see the floating bus stop on Tooley Street that TfL are using to demonstrate how they should work. The reality was very different from the demo. Please stop routing cycle lanes through pavements at bus stops. #BusStopBypasses#FloatingBusStops#TfL#TooleyStreet
This is Victoria Train Station in #London. It’s huge and they are proposing to close all of the ticket office windows down. This is absolutely bonkers. They need to stay open and we need all the ticket offices in England to be kept open please. @RMTunion
This is what Kevin, who is blind and a long white can user thought of the new Cyclops Junction at Chorlton in Manchester, which is part of the Bee walking & cycling network ‘It’s just totally confusing’. The layout is too complex and no more should be built please. #ActiveTravel
Filming to show how important black cabs are in London for blind & visually impaired people & this happened @NetworkRailEUS ‘Please do not ride on here lovelies, this is the disability bay. You really have to start to understand what this impact of people riding on pavements is’
@newdawn75 It’s definitely discrimination they are going against the Equality Act 2010. I am visually impaired, I have a 🦮 but I still have got a right to travel by train safely. If the staff go it will exclude people like me. It’s terrible. This has to be stopped @Mark_J_Harper
Routing cycle lanes on the pavement at bus stops has to stop. Floating bus stops / bus stop bypasses are not safe or accessible for blind people. Access has to be from the kerbside without having to cross or step into a cycle lane first. This is in Camden close to St Pancras Int.
So this is Euston Station in London. Where it is proposed to close all of the ticket office windows down. This is absolutely bonkers. This cannot be allowed to happen. All ticket offices including this one in Euston, need to be kept open please. @RMTunion
Filmed late last year next to Colliers Wood Tube Station London. This floating bus stop was put down in lockdown & needs to be removed. Disabled people cannot use it. Access to & from the bus needs to be direct from the pavement without having to cross or step into a cycle lane.
Words fail. Who comes up with designs that discriminate? How did this get through planning? At what point did anyone assess how are blind or visually impaired bus passengers going to use this? At what point did their access needs get ignored? Blackfriars Station Bus Stop J London
This is Long Eaton train station in Nottinghamshire. It is proposed to close the ticket office & it will be visited daily by mobile colleagues’ @RishiSunak please stop the plans for the closure of all ticket offices in England it is not safe, secure or accessible @RMTunion
Made it to Manchester Piccadilly train station, where all the ticket office windows at the station are earmarked for closure. Nobody will be able to buy a ticket from a human & there was no accessible information available to give to the public about the consultation. @RMTunion
Message to @RishiSunak on Wednesday @10DowningStreet over the proposed closure of up to 1000 train ticket offices in England ‘There is a real anger, frustration and bewilderment across the country. Why has this been announced? Stop this attack on the ticket offices’ @RMTunion
@HuwMerriman@Mark_J_Harper@RishiSunak The trains will be open for business when everyone is assured safety & accessibility at stations & on all trains. Nobody is going to be left behind. All trains needs guards & stations need ticket offices. Please leave them alone @RMTunion.
This is at St Thomas’s Hospital in London. Routing cycle lanes through the pavement at bus stops has to stop please @LordPeterHendy. Access to and from the bus has to be direct from the pavement without having to cross a cycle lane first.
@newdawn75 &🦮Nellie visited a new type of bus stop in a cycle lane close to Kew Bridge in London. Sarah is not often lost for words but this scheme left her speechless. ‘There’s nothing to keep me safe, there’s nothing to keep Nellie safe. It is ridiculous & it is dangerous.’
Every journey matters in London unless you are blind or visually impaired.
ALT Photo of two blind people, one lady and one gentleman, standing in front of Transport for London building opposite Southwark Station in London holding their white canes. Behind them is a yellow wall with the words ‘Transport for London’ ‘Every journey matters’ in blue letters.
This is Beeston Train Station in Nottinghamshire. There was no hard copy of the information about the proposed closure of the ticket office to take away, no accessible formats available to take away, no Braille, no audio, no large print, no sign language, just nothing. @RMTunion
This is outside St Thomas' Hospital, just down from Westminister Bridge in London. There is a problem of people who ride bikes, e-bikes & e-scooters jumping the red light when pedestrians are crossing. Some riders pass extremely close to people crossing. This is not safe at all.
This is what our President who is blind said about the bus stop design where you step off the bus onto a narrow bus boarder next to a cycle lane on Lea Bridge Road, Waltham Forest
‘Not fit for purpose. It really is totally inaccessible. These sorts of designs should be scrapped’
Blind Lambeth resident raises concerns over the planned floating bus stops in the Streatham Hill scheme & asks @clairekholland to halt it. He says he was never consulted on it. @Keir_Starmer@LordPeterHendy@LordBlunkett@SteveReedMP can you help please (warning collisions shown)
This is what Andrew our Past President had to say about the junction layout out at Blackhorse Road Station in Walthamstow: ‘The cycle lanes should not be on the pavement. It’s detrimental to the independence of blind and partially sighted people.’
We asked @NPCUK General Secretary about @Mark_J_Harper proposed changes to the railways. This is Jans reply ‘I think they are absolutely despicable. What they are doing really amounts to exclusion & discrimination. I think it is an act of exclusion that is unforgivable’ @RMTunion
@Mark_J_Harper please urgently act on our petition for the safety, security & accessibility at all train stations & on all trains handed into your office yesterday by Bill & @newdawn75 Which is supported by 80+ organisations from across the UK @RMTuniongloucestershirelive.co.uk/ne…

Like to share @SurreyCoalition message to @RishiSunak@10DowningStreet last Monday ‘We need station staff, we need ticket offices & guards on all trains. Staff on the platforms, somebody to help you, give us support & security on the trains as well as on the platform’ @RMTunion
Our urgent message to @RishiSunak@10DowningStreet to bring a halt to floating bus stops & shared use bus boarders in the UK. The designs are not safe or accessible for blind, visually impaired & disabled people. Petition handed in on 15/05/24 with 270+ supporting organisations.
#Cyclists please be polite and stop for the red light to let pedestrians cross the road, without trying to whizz past from all directions. No excuses not to stop when you see red. It will make a big difference to so many people. Thank you.
Went back to the floating bus stop opposite St Thomas’ Hospital in London. It simply is not working & never has. Access to & from the bus direct from the pavement is urgently needed please. @MayorofLondon not sure how many times we have to say this but this has to stop please.
They are proposing to close all of the ticket office windows at Marylebone Station in London down. This is the most bonkers idea I have ever heard of - closing tickets offices down at train stations. Please stop what you are doing and leave all ticket offices open. @RMTunion
#Cyclists please respect the red light at pedestrian crossings. This shows how easy it is to hit and knock a #pedestrian completely off their feet. #HighwayCode
Took part of audio off as the person riding the bike swore at me for crossing on the green man signal for pedestrians to cross. Another pedestrian stopped to let the rider go past & was left standing in the road. Please give us time to cross. Lea Bridge Road & Hoe Street Junction
Emily from @ABCommuters handed in significant evidence to @RishiSunak@10DowningStreet to show mass discrimination already existing on the rail network & which will only get worse if the rail reforms are pushed through. Our President Andrew was at the door with Emily. @RMTunion
This is our message to @RishiSunak ahead of our petition hand in @10DowningStreet on 31 August 2023 to stop the closure of all train ticket offices. The petition is supported by 180+ organisations, 7 of which will help us deliver it to the door this Thursday @RMTunion
Went back to Park Lane in London. Found part of the cycle lane closed. People observed riding on the pavement, on the floating bus stop island & past people waiting at or on the crossing. @CityWestminster@MetCycleCops@TfL please urgently do something as this is not safe.
Please stop riding through red lights when pedestrians have the green man to cross the road. These crossings have rotating cones underneath the push button box to alert blind people when it’s safe to cross & it’s not safe when people ride through them on a red light at any speed.
Janes message to @RishiSunak@10DowningStreet ‘Is to keep ticket offices open, because we get a really good service, when we go and buy our tickets. Ticket machines is inaccessible. They are in breach of the Equality Act 2010 because they have not provided all formats.’ @RMTunion
Thank you @LordChrisHolmes for calling for a moratorium on floating bus stops @UKHouseofLords debate on transport. Thank you also for asking this important question on floating bus stops ‘How are disabled people suppose to safely & effectively board & alight those bus services?’
Like to thank @MPSRTPC@MetCycleCops for giving us a safe space to discuss with cyclists at #HighburyCorner our concerns on bikes being ridden on the pavement. We also would like to thank everyone who stopped to talk to @newdawn75 & her GuideDog Nellie it was greatly appreciated.
The reality of #Leicester which has been transformed to encourage cycling but has ignored the access needs of blind & visually impaired pedestrians. This junction needs its green man pedestrian crossings back & pedestrians need their pavements back. Filmed during #ActiveCity2024.
Kevin also went back to @10DowningStreet. His message @RishiSunak ‘We are totally against the closure of ticket offices we are just going to be barred from travel we cannot allow that to happen. What is happening is wrong it’s illegal. We are being discriminated against @RMTunion
Absolutely shocking design. Needs to be removed. The bus needs to be able to pull directly up to the kerb to allow passengers to get on and off the bus from the pavement without having to step into or cross a cycle lane first.
Routing cycle lanes on the pavement at bus stops has to stop. Floating bus stops / bus stop bypasses are not safe or accessible for blind people. Access has to be from the kerbside without having to cross or step into a cycle lane first. This is in Camden close to St Pancras Int.
Like to thank @Mark_J_Harper office for accepting our petition backed by 80+ organisations for safety security & accessibility at all stations & on all trains in UK from Bill a constituent @newdawn75 & Nellie🦮yesterday. We need guards on all trains & ticket offices to stay open.
@Keir_Starmer blind peoples access needs at bus stops in cycle lane schemes has been systematically ignored over the past 10 years, leading to blind people being locked out of using their bus services. Will you change this & put an end to this discrimination please?
This is @GdVikki who came all the way from Somerset to London to march from the @transportgovuk to @10DowningStreet to save the train ticket offices from closing down. ‘I can’t get across how critical this is for me. It will be an absolute disaster if this goes ahead.’ @RMTunion
@MayorofLondon@SadiqKhan no more studies will change this behaviour at floating bus stops in London. More are being planned, constructed & made permanent. Our petition, our concerns & our access needs are still being ignored. This is blatant discrimination. It has to stop please
New bus stops in #LeithWalk Edinburgh are not safe for blind people as Sandy explains ‘How can they approve these designs? It’s totally confusing to any blind person. I wouldn’t come here independently. It’s totally inaccessible to people like me. I just find it unbelievably bad’
The pause on floating bus stops by @LordPeterHendy@simonlightwood is for shared use bus borders as shown in the video, where passengers board & alight the bus directly from & into the cycle lane. This pause needs to be made permanent, along with all types of floating bus stops.
It's unacceptable that blind people in London are unable to use public transport independently due to routing cycle lanes on and through pavements at bus stops.

Hyacinth & the @MayorofLondon@TfL every journey matters advert for #IDPD2022 ‘Well it doesn’t work for me as I can’t travel by bus anymore if I have to get off where there is a cycle lane. I only go out if it absolutely necessary. My independence is being eroded bit by bit’#CRPD
@newdawn75 uses the train as her main way of traveling, Sarah said ‘I am so angry, it’s unbelievable, to take away my independence. It is going to exclude & isolate me. What disgusts me even more @Mark_J_Harper was a former Minister for Disabled People so he should know better’
Our President Andrew, who is blind, visited the Markhouse Road active travel scheme in Waltham Forest this week. He was asked about blind people being expected to step off a bus directly into a cycle lane. This was his answer “It really is extremely dangerous.”
