Of all the jaw-dropping stats about Gibson's 1968, this is my favorite: he was never removed for another pitcher. Not once, all year. Including the World Series, he made 37 starts. He completed 31 of them. The other six, he was removed for a pinch-hitter.
Annual reminder:
Odell Haggins, who has six games as a head coach in his career, has as many bowl wins as every Miami (fl) head coach post-Larry Coker combined.
With Miami (Fla.) losing today and therefore officially missing a bowl, this will now remain true for at least another 12 months:
Odell Haggins has as many bowl wins as every Canes coach post-Larry Coker combined.
Newspapers, I am begging you to provide "buy this article only" as an option. I believe in paying for content! I have digital subscriptions to four newspapers! But, man, I don't want to have to buy 20 different subscriptions to read what you have to offer.
All of them. I'm disappointed that this is even a question.
All of them. 200 bowl games. Disputed territories too. TCU and Purdue in the Transnistria Bowl presented by Raising Cane's.
In a truly shocking development, #StLCards take a polished college pitcher from a power program with their first pick.
Who could have foreseen?
Whomst?
I don’t really follow the Blues. I just have residual warm feelings for a city that was wonderful to us.
And yet.
I am yelling at my tv. Gasping. This is nuts. #LGB
BASEBALL FINAL IN NASHVILLE: No. 1 Tennessee 5, No. 3 Vanderbilt 2.
#Vols earn first series win in Nashville since 2009. And they’re still undefeated in SEC play, impoving to 26-1 overall, 8-0 in league play.
They’ll go for the sweet tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.
By my calculations (and double-checked by @AndrewSimonMLB), John Gant becomes the first player in history with at least two home runs who has never reached base safely by any other means.
Joe Flacco just passed Joe Montana in career passing yards and I don’t ever want to hear another word about baseball records and milestones being cheapened.
It is possible to hold both of the following views:
* Wins are basically useless in evaluating pitchers.
* Many, if not most, pitchers care about wins and it’s a really cool moment when a pitcher gets his first or 100th or 250th or whatever.
I know he was a great ballplayer, but that’s not at all what I think of when I think about Lou Brock.
He was an unfailingly kind, warm, funny man, and every time I ever got to interact with him was a delight.
He will be dearly missed.
I have no words but I’m going to try anyway. Rick Hummel was a kind, decent, funny man, a true pro, a mentor, and the best writer of a game story I ever saw. He will be dearly missed.
So much love to the so many people who are heartbroken right now. Thanks, Commish.
That's a wrap from SunTrust Park, and since I just watched the Redbirds win, let's do a little throwback.
42 down, 120 to go. #StLCards on pace to go 89-73. G'night, and I'll tweet at you tomorrow.
Almost 32 years after I saw them for the first time, the mighty @LivingColour is still an absolute force of nature and one of the baddest live bands around. If you get the chance to go see them, do not miss.
Gutted. Red was an absolute delight. Condolences to his friends, family, the organization and the many, many other people who loved him. It was a privilege to have spent time around him.
As someone who grew up going to FSU basketball games in the early days of the Civic Center (that’s what we called it back then, kids), it’s absolutely stunning what the atmosphere is like now. So cool to see and I never could have imagined it.
Hey, it's been a while, and that was a fun game. So for old time's sake:
17 down, 145 to go. #StLCards on pace to go 95-67. G'night, and I'll tweet at y'all tomorrow... nitter.app/bengodar/status/986454…
It’s so weird — FSU and LSU are playing the next two years, but it’s a pseudo home and home. Superdome and Orlando. Just play at the damn home stadiums.
Sooooo this is my 21st opening day at MLB dot com. New role this year, same gratitude, joy, and pride to be a part of this operation with so many great people.
The 2011 postseason was so incredible that I've always felt like we lost sight of how amazing the Cards' late regular-season run was. nitter.app/TunesSTL/status/910699…
Let's just take a brief moment and imagine TLR's reaction, had there been a fire-alarm delay in the midst of a no-hit bid by one of his pitchers. You think the ribbon boards were a kerfuffle?
A small private school from a large international city in the southeastern US wins a major bowl game. I was honestly beginning to think we might never see that again.
Josh Bell's double was his 40th extra-base hit of the year. The last guy with 40 before the end of May? That'd be Edgar Martinez, who had 43... in 1996.
Me, just some dude who listens to @SplitZoneDuo: “it’s not weird at all! He got a big raise and it’s a much bigger football budget with better facilities. How do I know more about this than you?!?!”
We are looking for a Cardinals beat reporter to follow in the footsteps of the great @LangoschMLB, who is moving into a new role on our editorial team.
Hard to imagine a better opportunity for an ambitious baseball reporter.

Scott Rolen is easily a HoFer if he hadn't run into Hee Seop Choi.
(And, yeah, if you want to make the argument he should be anyway, I'll hear you out. But if he'd stayed healthy, he's already in.)
Davis Hare strikes out the side and #FSU beats Miami 6-4 in the rubber match to take the series.
Huge win for the #Noles and it couldn't have happened without Ross Dunn's impressive relief appearance today.
FSU very much in the NCAA regional hosting conversation.
I am becoming known within MLB dot com for my love of The Streak -- the last 11 pitchers to start a no-hitter in an NL park have gotten a hit. It's my favorite baseball stat.
