Finally, the EPP has started tackling the far-right problem within its ranks. Today’s expulsion of MEP Grims, a close ally of Janša, is the right decision. This should not be the end, but the beginning of the EPP’s reckoning with right-wing extremism. We have sounded the alarm time and again: Janša’s entire party should be expelled for: - its erosion of democracy and justice, - attacks on journalists, women, civil society, and trade unions, and - open disregard for EU institutions, including this Parliament.

The reported EPP move to expel MEP Grims, Janša’s close ally, over ties to the far right is welcome news. But is this really an isolated case? As we warned in our Ljubljana Declaration, to defend Europe against Trump-aligned far-right forces, the EPP must expel Janša’s entire party. The EPP needs to take a hard look in the mirror. Its reflection is increasingly shaped by far-right politicians within its own ranks, pushing the group ever further to the right.

“Send them back” is just the first step. The far-right and right in the European Parliament saw the Trump playbook and thought “let’s bring it back” to Europe, by introducing an ICE-style deportation model. “Send them back” is not a migration policy. It is a slogan of fear that paves the way for a much darker future. Shame on those who applauded today's outburst in Parliament and who continue to back a Return Regulation that undermines fundamental rights and human dignity. Xenophobia and racism should have no place in Europe, and we will keep fighting for an EU that defends fundamental rights, the rule of law and the dignity of every person.

Les bancs de l’extrême-droite exultent aux cris de « Renvoyez-les! » alors que le Parlement européen vient d’adopter le règlement « retour » qui importe la politique migratoire de Donald Trump en Europe. Nous avons voté contre cette politique aussi inhumaine qu’inefficace : rétention jusqu’à 2 ans sans procès, y compris les enfants, perquisitions des domiciles et « autres locaux pertinents » sans mandat judiciaire, expulsions à l'aveugle… C’est un jour sombre pour l’Europe et ses valeurs. Thanks to @berndlange + whole team, we have secured essential improvement to EU - US tariff deal. We empowered the EU Commission to pull the plug should the USA fail to uphold its commitments. This is a temporary agreement with clear conditions. Not a blank cheque for Trump.

Shameful. We need a swift EU decision to ban settlement trade + full implementation of the ICJ AO of 19 July 2024. Meaningful action on Israel by the EU is long overdue.
