The Betio Hospital in Tarawa, Kiribati 🇰🇮 has been awarded the ‘Excellence in Healthcare Planning’ award in the European Healthcare Design awards. This award recognises outstanding healthcare planning that enables more effective, efficient, and accessible clinical service delivery. It celebrates projects and strategic plans that introduce new models of care, leverage technology, and improve access, capacity, flow, and flexibility across healthcare systems. The hospital also was highly commended under the ‘Design for Neighbourhood Health’ category, recognising outstanding healthcare developments that actively promote population health, wellness and healthy living beyond traditional hospital settings.
MFAT funded the design and construction of the Betio Hospital through our New Zealand International Development Cooperation (IDC) Programme and it has been a major success. Partnering with Japan and the Asia Development Bank (ADB), New Zealand partnered with Jacobs to design the hospital, and with Reeves Envico and Egis to construct a maternity ward, children’s ward, and hospital management facilities that will service the local population of around 20,000. Japan contributed fittings and equipment to these wards, with the ADB funding the second phase of construction (adults’ in-patient unit, out-patients unit, and emergency department).
