As a high ranking Liverpool official said this summer, if you want to know what is really happening at Newcastle United read Luke Edwards in the Telegraph. I was flattered. I only ever report what I’m told and learn.
I was wrong to say that Alexander Isak would not be sold this summer. But that was my information at the time. It was steadfast.
But things change, situations alter, people move in a different direction and I have to try and keep up with them.
When the time came, I broke the exclusive story that Newcastle had agreed a £130m deal to sell Isak to Liverpool. Forget the rest who pretend they did, they didn’t. Yes this is a boast post.
It has been a long, hard summer. I’ve had to deal with a major family trauma, a major tournament with England women’s team. And I’ve had to keep track of the transfer saga of the decade.
To do this job is to commit to it. I’ve spent more time on the phone this summer, talking to people, messaging people, to try and do what I do best. I love what I do but it’s not easy.
My wife joked that I gave my family four days of our two week summer holiday. Four days when I wasn’t on the phone dealing with Newcastle United matters. And talking about Alexander bloody Isak.
So yes, you can send me tweets about what I said earlier in the summer, but at the time everything was as it was told to me. You can call me names, I don’t care, it makes me smile most of the time. I’m wired differently to most.
But when push came to shove, when the pressure was on, every single moment was worth it when I exclusively revealed that Isak was heading to Liverpool for £130m.
That is the job I do. I don’t rip off other people’s information and pretend it’s my own, I don’t pretend I know what is happening. I don’t conjure up tweets out of thin air for engagement and profit on here, telling people what they want to hear. I’m not paid by agents to leak stories, I report.
You can be wrong, but in the end, when you get a story 100% right, it’s all worth it.
Sorry for the self indulgence, but this is a love letter to all the newspaper journalists out there who do what I do every single day and are subjected to the abuse that comes with it on here every single day.
Keep smiling, we watch football for a living. Nothing better than that xx
