The schools are still eliminating rigorous grading standards. They are still softening and eliminating discipline policies through “restorative practices.” They’re still focusing on equity and inclusion. They’re still using social and emotional learning, still segregating students with special clubs based on skin color, and they’re still pushing all educators through professional development trainings about nonsense. The schools are still practicing Critical Race Theory on children; still using their theory of what race is and how race and racism work as a filter through which they pass all educational policy, procedure, pedagogy, and practice. Essentially nothing has changed, but the uproar has passed because the face of Critical Race Theory – things like “privilege walks” and class readings of the 1619 Project – are mostly over and out of the news. Parents can’t find the words “Critical Race Theory” in the textbook, so the “experts” tell us Critical Race Theory is dead. “It’s not in schools,” they say – which is precisely what they said when the evidence was easier to acquire. We’ve just witnessed our 2021 “Critical Race Theory” reversal moment, but with Woke and at the national scale. People are claiming “Woke is dead,” but essentially nothing has changed. Ok. Restorative Justice must-know thread: Restorative Justice (RJ) started in the criminal justice system. Restorative Practices (RP) are meant to move society away from laws that emphasize “retributive justice” (an eye for an eye) and towards encouraging “relational” and “restorative” justice. Activists quickly pushed RJ into schools by arguing that too many students are suspended and expelled, which exacerbates the “school-to-prison pipeline.” They argued, following a huge push from the Obama administration, that traditional school discipline measures were rooted in “white supremacy” and “whiteness.” RJ rests on the premise that traditional discipline – suspending students who fight and cause chaos – is “exclusionary.” We know how the Woke feel about exclusion. “Inclusion” is meant to overcome exclusion by hiring “experts” who can identify “exclusionary” policies like school suspensions. The goal of “inclusion” is to root out “exclusion,” as defined on Woke terms. RJ is meant to restructure schools away from “oppressive” and “managerial” punishment (see Foucault, especially Discipline and Punish). RJ sells itself as a way to improve school climate, culture, and academic engagement—in short, student behavior. The literature is crystal clear, however. Improving student “behavior” is a motte. RJ believes that student misbehavior is only considered misbehavior because the current oppressive structure of schools was created by an oppressor class that has illegitimately defined “misbehavior” to weed out anyone who won’t accept the reproduction of the oppressor’s society. RJ argues that student behavior is determined by the structure and policies of a school – It’s not the students who need to change – it’s the school. In this way, the blame for misbehavior is transferred away from individuals and placed squarely onto the school and community at large. RJ “addresses harm done,” not “rules broken.” Schools pick up RJ because they are told that RJ and RP will eliminate discipline gaps between various “identity” groups. In practice, RJ is a Woke Marxist approach to discipline and punishment. The meat of RJ is found in “restorative circles.” “Circles,” the literature tells us, are largely influenced by “indigenous ways of knowing” and “spirituality.” The point of circles is to awaken a Critical Consciousness in learners. Restorative circles should be thought of as magic circles where children are convinced that they are oppressed and the only way to overcome their oppression is to become a Woke revolutionary. Restorative circles are abusive because they “solidify the pedagogical value of conflict,” meaning they amp up and even generate conflict between students. Why? Because that’s how Marxists think you move History forward—through generating and “resolving” conflict dialectically. The “restorative circles” approach is a regurgitation of Paulo Freire’s “dialogical model.” RJ doesn’t try to “restore” order in the classroom. It attempts to sow *disorder* to inspire activism. The point of RJ and RP are to completely transform schools, allowing for a maximum amount of student misbehavior. The only thing RJ is meant to “restore” are *social relations* as understood by Marx in his Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844. Really. It’s that simple. Of course, all of this costs the taxpayer tens of thousands of $$ per/year. RJ creates maximum chaos, all while hamstringing teachers and taking students out of the learning environment to place them into the “social and emotional” environment where they learn to be activists. If your school is practicing Restorative Justice then you can expect worsening academic outcomes, rampant misbehavior and chaos, high teacher turnover, and mentally unhealthy kids.
