The TNI Bill contains problematic provisions that threaten democracy and human rights. Its revision risks undermining military professionalism and reviving the TNI’s Dual Function, allowing active military personnel to hold civilian positions—potentially leading to civilian exclusion, increased military dominance, and dual loyalty.

#Indonesia🇮🇩 Today, April 10, 2025, Gerakan Masyarakat Sipil Adili Soeharto (GEMAS) submitted an open letter to the Ministry of Social Affairs to express its firm rejection of the proposal to grant Suharto the title of National Hero.
During his 32-year authoritarian rule, Suharto was responsible for:
1) The 1965–66 mass killings, which led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people
2) Enforced disappearances and torture of political opponents and activists
3) Widespread and systematic human rights violations
4) Deep-rooted corruption, collusion, and nepotism that undermined democratic institutions
This proposal is not only misguided, but also constitutes an attempt to erase historical truths and whitewash state crimes. It is a grave insult to the victims and their families who continue to fight for truth, justice, and reparation.

The dispersal of a peaceful protest by the municipal police (Satpol PP) constitutes a serious violation of the freedom of assembly and expression‼️
1) The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression is protected under international regulations such as the ICCPR and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, both of which Indonesia has ratified.
"The right of peaceful assembly shall be recognized. No restrictions may be placed on the exercise of this right other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society "
2. The municipal police (Satpol PP) are not the competent authority to carry out such dispersals. This could be considered a serious violation, as obstructing these rights may be subject to legal sanctions.
We condemn the unlawful actions by Satpol PP, as well as the police's failure to act. These actions further restrict the space for freedom of assembly and expression in Indonesia.

#Indonesia🇮🇩 Today, April 10, 2025, Gerakan Masyarakat Sipil Adili Soeharto (GEMAS) submitted an open letter to the Ministry of Social Affairs to express its firm rejection of the proposal to grant Suharto the title of National Hero.
During his 32-year authoritarian rule, Suharto was responsible for:
1) The 1965–66 mass killings, which led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people
2) Enforced disappearances and torture of political opponents and activists
3) Widespread and systematic human rights violations
4) Deep-rooted corruption, collusion, and nepotism that undermined democratic institutions
This proposal is not only misguided, but also constitutes an attempt to erase historical truths and whitewash state crimes. It is a grave insult to the victims and their families who continue to fight for truth, justice, and reparation.
