Fifty yrs ago today was my 25th birthday in Saigon. Never thought I’d see it. I arrived in Vietnam a year earlier, and had so many close calls, I shouldn’t have lived. But I did. Every year after was a gift. When I hit 50 I doubled up, and today, on my 75th, I scored a triple!
Hands down best political picture of the year. Hats off to @JimWatson_AFP/@GettyImages for nailing this incredible moment. All you need to know about the Bidens and Trumps is here. The power of photography. @AFP
It was a painful decision to resign from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, but necessary. I hope more people around the country will follow @Liz_Cheney's example and speak out about the threat to our democracy. Time to step up.

Best answer of the week: @andersoncooper “Is there anyone around the president who shakes their head when they hear rambling in the Rose Garden like this?” @Acosta: “No, Anderson we are down to Kool-Aid drinkers and next of kin here at the Trump White House.” @CNN @jwgop
The final goodbye. @cindymccain at the casket of her husband @SenJohnMcCain shortly before his burial at the U.S. Naval Academy. It was an emotional day for all of us who knew and admired him.
Whether you love Joe Biden, hate the guy, or are on the fence, watch his entire speech today at the @McCainInstitute It is one of the best presidential addresses ever, and I've heard hundreds. He speaks for himself and his passion: Democracy. @cindymccainc-span.org/video/?530790-1/p…
Roberta McCain, @SenJohnMcCain's 106-year-old mother, pauses in front of his casket in the U.S Capitol Rotunda. today where he was Lying in State. Mrs. McCain was born a week before Arizona became a state in 1912. Behind her are Senators Chuck Schumer and Orrin Hatch.
Trump's Fox News appearance inside the Lincoln Memorial was deeply offensive. He said, "They always said . . . nobody got treated worse than Lincoln. I believe I am treated worse.” Wow. My photo of Pres. Ford honoring Abe Lincoln in 1975 on his 165th birthday. @ccp_uarizona
As a photographer who's been shot at by various hostile forces around the world covering stories that let you know what's really going on, I deeply resent Trump's recklessness with statements like this. Unamerican. Unpresidential. Unfunny. yahoo.com/huffpost/trump-ali…
How to turn over the keys to the White House. You didn't see a photo like this on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 2021 when Joe Biden became president and Trump dissed him. 14 yrs ago today with Pres. and Mrs. Bush and incoming First Couple Barack & Michelle Obama. @BeschlossDC
Jack McCain comforts his mother @cindymccain as "Danny Boy" is sung during services for @SenJohnMcCain today. Son James McCain is behind them. It was an emotional funeral, and some powerful eulogies were delivered, one of the best by daughter @MeghanMcCain
Former President George Bush would have been 96 today. I took this when he was Vice President in 1983. He was a really great guy, I knew him well, and considering everything that's been going on for the last 3 1/2 years, I miss him 3.5x more than ever! @ccp_uarizona
Cindy McCain at her husband @SenJohnMcCain’s casket in the Arizona State Capitol Rotunda yesterday. Thousands of people filed by to pay their respects. I’m documenting all of the memorial events and the funeral for the McCain family.
Rep @Liz_Cheney goes over the speech she gave last night that said, "I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy.” @CCP_UArizona@jmeacham
Honoring Jimmy Carter who stands apart in a crowd. He is in the final stretch of a life well-lived. Five presidents, Oval Office, 1/7/2009. Prez-elect @BarackObama joins Pres. Bush 43 and former presidents Bush 41, Clinton & Carter. @jaketapper@BeschlossDC@JoeNBC @PeteSouza
Uncropped. Opening of the @NMAAHC in 2016. This version, never published, is to honor the late @repjohnlewis at left. First Lady Michelle Obama hugs former President George W. Bush. Former First Lady Laura Bush and President Barack Obama are also finally included! @CCP_UArizona
Former President @BarackObama and former President George W. Bush after Bush's eulogy during services for @SenJohnMcCain at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. today. Both men had beaten McCain in elections, and he asked them to deliver remarks at his funeral.
Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts is dead at 80. This is a portrait I made of him at the Memorial Coliseum in 1966 in Portland, Oregon when he was 25 years old. This is the first time this photo has been published. @CCP_UArizona@RollingStones#History
Happy birthday, America. Thank you for letting me live the American Dream. We must fight every day to make sure that dream is as true for a Black child born in Minneapolis as it was for a white bodybuilder born in Austria. via @attn
A powerful eulogy by @MeghanMcCain about her dad @SenJohnMcCain. She said, among many things, "America does not boast because she has no need to. The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great." Her dad would have been damn proud.
One of my faves, @MollyJongFast on @CNN@brianstelter show this morning on how debate moderator Chris Wallace will call @realDonaldTrump on his bs: She said, "I don't know how you fact check someone who has said more than 20,000 lies." Good point.
Former VP Walter Mondale has died at 93. He was one of the good guys. I took this of him in his White House office in 1977. His daughter Eleanor was a friend of mine who died in 2011. They will always be remembered and missed. @CCP_UArizona@jmeacham@BeschlossDC
Big shoutout to this woman breaking down exactly why MAGA dipshits just can’t let go of their orange messiah, no matter what he does or says.
Note: She’s much more eloquent than I am - at no time does she refer to them as “the dumbest motherfuckers on the planet.”
Portrait of defeat. Clutching a crumpled MAGA hat, @realDonaldTrump returns from his Tulsa mega-disastrous rally. This incredible moment by Patrick Semansky of @AP and is Pulitzer-caliber work documenting the beginning of the end of Trump’s presidency. @jwgop @SteveSchmidtSES
Their dog Liberty, here with puppies in the White House, was a gift from me and Susan to her parents. Liberty was from Oregon, my home state, her middle name was Hume! She lived a long and happy life. @gtconway3 @NickKristof@AdamKinzinger@ImprovAmbassadr@Ford_Library
76 yrs ago today Joe Rosenthal made this of U.S. Marines on Iwo Jima. His shot rings across the ages alongside work of Mozart, Rembrandt, Hemingway. Joe captured the heart and soul of what it means to be a Marine in a picture embodying the essence of Americans. @PulitzerPrizes
I caught this moment of VP Dick Cheney and daughter Rep. Liz Cheney on the way to the House floor to observe a moment of silence for all the victims of the Jan. 6th insurrection. They were the only two Republicans present. @CCP_UArizona@jmeacham@BeschlossDC
Bidding a sad farewell to my friend of 50 yrs Joe Galloway, the Ernie Pyle of the Vietnam War. Joe was the best in the business. I took this of him in 2016 at the @LBJLibrary. The Army awarded him a Bronze Star for Valor, the only civilian in VN War so honored. @CCP_UArizona
With President Gerald R. Ford in the Oval Office, 1976. I was proud to be his friend and chief White House photographer. (Official White House photo by Bill Fitz-Patrick)
Former 1st Lady Rosalyn Carter died today at 96. Took this with 1st Lady Betty Ford Jan. 20, 1977 at the White House before Jimmy Carter's Inauguration. Mrs. Ford died at 93 in 2011. A pair of great ladies. @BeschlossDC@MeachamDaily@mikebarnicle@jaketapper@JoeNBC@kasie
Obama photographer pal @PeteSouza dropped by with his new book on the White House inner workings, “The West Wing and Beyond” a fantastic back-stage look at what makes the place tick. Congrats to chief prez photog #9 from #3! Photo by @ImprovAmbassadr@BeschlossDC@jaketapper
President Gerald R. Ford died 14 years ago today, Dec. 26 , 2006. I miss him, his friendship, and his deep love for this country. But most of all I miss his humanity. @BeschlossDC@jmeacham@CCP_UArizona
Heading off to the field 49 yrs ago outside the UPI bureau in Saigon. I was slinging a flak jacket, backpack, helmet, pancho, and other combat accoutrement, going out for a week or two to cover the war. Meanwhile, Trump was riding around in daddy’s limo in NYC.@CCP_UArizona
The final victory. Sen. Robert Kennedy after winning the California Primary, 50 years ago today. His last words were, “. . . on to Chicago and let’s win there!" Moments later he was shot. I was 21 when I made this photo. He was my inspiration to get into political photography.
"One’s country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth dying for, because it’s the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man. All of you loved liberty. All of you were willing to fight tyranny, and you knew the people of your countries were behind you."
Won't back down. @Liz_Cheney is one of the few Republicans in the House with any guts. Having known her for 47 years, no surprise. Integrity & Honor. Some of her colleagues ought to give them a try. @jmeachamcnn.com/2021/02/03/politics/…
Ethel Kennedy today in a photo I made at the Arlington Cemetery gravesite of her husband Robert Kennedy who died 50 years ago today after being felled by an assassin’s bullet. She is an unbelievably strong and wonderful person. #RFK
Today @cindymccain endorsed former VP @JoeBiden for president. I took this of Biden emotionally eulogizing @SenJohnMcCain in Phoenix as Mrs. McCain and their kids listened. He said, “My name is Joe Biden. I’m a Democrat. And I loved John McCain." Powerful. @CCP_UArizona
The Cold War, 1974. Because rooms in Vladivostok, USSR were bugged, Pres Ford and aides discussed secret info outside in sub-zero temperatures. They were serious people unlike this current confederacy of clowns. @JoeNBC@mikebarnicle@AdamKinzinger@BillKristol@SykesCharlie
Rep. @Liz_Cheney said the president was solely to blame for the U.S. Capitol attack, and the deaths. “There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution,” she said, "I will vote to impeach the President."
This is how the Soviets used to do it. They placed a political officer on their nuclear subs to keep an eye on the captain. This is right out of a Tom Clancy novel, and we know who the bad guys are. apnews.com/article/election-…
G. Gordon Liddy and former VP Spiro Agnew at Nixon's funeral 30 yrs ago today. Liddy was convicted of the Watergate burglaries, spent 4 1/2 yrs in jail, Agnew resigned as VP after pleading no contest to a felony charge of tax evasion. @gtconway3d@BillKristol@mikebarnicle
Gerald R. Ford was sworn in as 40th VP of the U.S. 47 yrs ago today. The Fords were two of the most humble and wonderful people I’ve known. I took this at their home in Alexandria, VA. I miss them everyday, particularly over the last 4 years. @jmeacham@BeschlossDC@CCP_UArizona
Robert F. Kennedy died 55 yrs ago today at 1:44 A.M, June 6, 1968. I took this as he talked to young native Americans in AZ. He gave them hope, listened to what they had to say, and made no promises he didn't feel he could keep. @KerryKennedyRFK@JoeNBC@jaketapper@BeschlossDC
You can thank @ProjectLincoln for helping downgrade ole Brad. Tulsa didn't help his case either. They're going to need more than a new campaign manager to stop the campaign's arterial bleeding. Is there a Dr. Fauci in the house? @jwgop thedailybeast.com/brad-parsc…
Pres Reagan's powerful speech on the 40th Anniv of D-Day, June 6, 1984. “These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war.” @BeschlossDC@JoeNBC@jaketapper
Picture of me and California Gov. Ronald Reagan in 1968. He was 57, (I was 21). Today is his 111th birthday. He died in 2004 at 93. Next month I’ll be 75! Time flies when you’re having fun. @CCP_UArizona @TotallyEffnLost @BeschlossDC@jmeacham@Reagan_Library
Here in Arlington at sunset today thinking of Joe Rosenthal, my friend and the great photographer who made the iconic picture on Iwo Jima that inspired this magnificent memorial —this sculpture and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall are two places I consider sacred.
Note to @realDonaldTrump: In 1964 extremist Republican candidate Barry Goldwater lost the popular vote to LBJ by 61%, who also got 90% of the electoral college, (486 to 52). It was the biggest majority since 1820. Just FYI. @jwgop @gtconway3d@ProjectLincoln@murphymike
Every year, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation bestows an award meant to honor acts of political courage.
But foundation leaders are too cowardly to honor Liz Cheney for her courage taking on Trump.
It would be funny if it weren't so lame.

He's #1! With colleague @PeteSouza today in #LosAngeles. His @BarackObama book is a No. 1 best seller. Mine on President Ford, not so much, but taller! Congrats to a great photog.
Sen. Robert Kennedy was shot by an assassin in L.A. 56 yrs ago today and died the next day. RFK inspired me to choose political photography as a career. It has been all about the history. Made this a few weeks before he was killed. @KerryKennedyRFK@gtconway3d@mikebarnicle
After watching the @CNN documentary about #LindaRonstadt I found this photo I took of her during a shoot for @TIME at the Plaza Hotel in NYC in 1977. She is one of the greatest talents ever. I loved the film, love her. #LindaRonstadtMovie
.@BeschlossDC's used my pic of Pres. Ford right after he pardoned Nixon, Sept. 8, '74. Ford was getting calls from political leaders who privately told him that he did the right thing, then blasted him in public. I know, I was in the room as he got them. @CCP_UArizona
Against the backdrop of #Sedona, @SenJohnMcCain, wife @cindymccain at his side, suspended his 2000 campaign. This may have been my most elegant picture of a candidate ending a quest, but as we know, he roared back eight years later to win his Party's nomination.
One of my better post-resignation photos. Former VP Spiro Agnew after stepping down 48 years ago today. (Oct. 10, 1973). I can draw a straight line from this moment to me becoming the chief White House photographer. @jmeacham@BeschlossDC@CCP_UArizona @TotallyEffnLost #History
