Betty Ford accepted the 1974 White House Christmas tree from Ed and Mardee Cole on 12/6/1974. The 19.5 foot tall white fir had been grown in the Fords' home state of Michigan. It stood in the center of the Blue Room during the holiday season. #ArchivesTrees

#OTD in 1974, Betty Ford had surgery for breast cancer. Her openness in publicly discussing her diagnosis changed the conversation about this terrible disease. October will be Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we encourage everyone to get their routine cancer screenings.
