I analyze Green Bay Packers salary cap & roster. Help explain the dollars & sense of the team.
Also other nerdy, random, or interesting stuff in my brain.
Green Bay Packers Salary Cap Update 6/4/2026:
Salary Cap:
🟡Current: $26.35m
🔵Effective: $11.62m
Plenty of room for extensions for Watson, Kraft, and Wyatt!
The Packers traded Aaron Rodgers, let 8 starters walk in free agency, had no money to sign any significant free agents, had 12 draft picks make the roster (11 the prior year), started over on special teams, lost their All-Pro LT week 1...
...and got better in 2023!
#GoPackGo
The Packers will eat $35,072,000 of dead cap by trading Kenny Clark.
$13.125m of remaining signing bonus
$13.747m of remaining restructure bonus (x2)
$7.5m of roster bonus paid
$0.7m workout bonus
Yikes
Trade two 1st round picks (plus) to get Khalil Mack
Pay $91M over 4 years
Win zero playoff games
Trade away for next season 2nd & 6th round picks
Eat $24M dead cap charge on the way out
Not exactly an ideal payoff for the Chicago Bears with their Khalil Mack investment. Yikes.
Props to Brian Gutekunst for having the balls to look at his backup QBs, both of whom he had recently drafted, saying “this isn’t good enough” and them trading for a guy just before roster cutdowns and cutting the other two.
Tom Brady's parting gift to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - $32 million of backloaded contract dead cap to hit their books over the next 1-2 years while he isn't even on the team.
Packers fans can expect to see a LOT more in 2024:
-Hand on the ground 4-man defensive fronts
-Press man cornerback coverage
-Roaming center field free safeties
Basically, the complete opposite of what we've been used to.
Brian Gutekunst, Packers GM, Genius
1⃣Allow Jets to talk to Rodgers before deal in place
2⃣Leak Packers favorable narratives to media
3⃣Know Rodgers will have irresistible urge to "Set the Record Straight" and publicly over-commit his desires to play for the Jets
4⃣Wait
5⃣Profit
Imagine being upset the Green Bay Packers drafted a large, athletic, physical, productive, healthy, and young dude with a ton of upside at a premium position of need.
Can’t be me!
You can't have the coaching staff stand at the podium telling us Brandon McManus is healthy and that "Kickers miss Kicks" and then have McManus tell the Monday Night production crew he hasn't felt even "semi-healthy" until this week.
It's not adding up, with 2 kickers on the 53.

RB - AJ Dillon

OL - Josh Myers, Andre Dillard

Not a single "Must Re-Sign" in the whole group
The 2023 Salary Cap is $224.8M.
Today the Green Bay Packers played & won a football game with $118.5M (53%) of cap space unavailable on the field.

Packers Media: Are you excited to finally be able to run the Matt LaFleur offense?
Matt LaFleur: I don't know what you mean by that 😏

The Packers spent 2 second round picks on Christian Watson and so far they are using him as an expensive replacement for Tyler Ervin, running mostly jet sweeps and WR screens.
Malik Willis is 10,000% not going to be a Packer in 2026. Give me the reduced comp pick on 2027 over any potential 2026 trade package. He is more valuable as a premium backup in Green Bay’s Super Bowl window this year than trying to min-max a return on him walking out the door.
The GB Packers are 1st in both points scored & touchdown passes in the NFL.
But I was told they NEEDED to:
-Draft a WR
-Sign Antonio Brown
-Trade for Robbie Anderson
-Trade for Emmanuel Sanders
-Trade for AJ Green
-Trade for Will Fuller
-Trade for OBJ
-Trade for Allen Robinson
Raiders signed Davante Adams for $12.18M cap cost, gave up 1st & 2nd round picks
Packers signed De'Vondre Campbell, Rasul Douglas, Robert Tonyan, Jarran Reed for a combined $11.78 cap cost, drafted Quay Walker & 1/2 Christian Watson
This is a better football team without Adams
Packers up 7 points with 6:10 left after a 4th down redzone stop.
Their next 2 drives combined for -15 yards.
1 completion: 4 yds
1 run: 2 yds
3 incompletions
2 penalties: -10 yds
1 sack: -11 yds
Say what you want on special teams, the offense wasn't good enough in the moment.
The Packers have the following WRs & TEs under contract next season for $12.3M cap hit... total.
Christian Watson
Jayden Reed
Romeo Doubs
Dontayvion Wicks
Malik Heath
Samori Toure
Luke Musgrave
Tucker Kraft
Ben Sims
Bo Melton & Henry Pearson will also be back on minimum deals.
Was "I don't talk to Kickers" supposed to be some sort of brag?
Well, your kicker talked to Troy Aikman and told him he hasn't been healthy while your team has lost each of the last 2 games by 3 points each having missed field goals with McManus on the field.
Recently fired Jets coach Robert Saleh is at Packers practice. Long history between him and Matt LaFleur. Also has worked with Jeff Hafley.
We’ll hear from LaFleur after practice if he’s hired Saleh in some capacity.
That’s him on the far sideline watching the offense.
Jayden Reed is going to be a really good WR for the Packers for a long time.
I cannot confidently say that about anyone else in their WR room as they have all had their ups & downs - some will stay but which ones those are is up in the air.
Reed has been a consistent star ⭐️
I've watched the Packers lose to teams quarterbacked by Daniel Jones, Zach Wilson, Tyler Heinicke, Ryan Tannehill, Desmond Ridder, Jimmy Garoppolo, Kenny Pickett, and Tommy DeVito over the past 2 seasons.
I'm not discounting a Shanahan lead team regardless of their starting QB.
The Green Bay Packers can sign any free agent they want next offseason. I conservatively project $25M cap to spend with only basic roster maintenance & draft class adds.
They can create another $50.8M with simple restructures on 8 pricey veterans - more if they add void years.
Being over 6’4” and able to run a sub 4.4 40 doesn’t mean much as a NFL WR if you are lacking in-air ball skills, reliable hands, or physical contested catch ability.
Packers need some extra from Christian Watson.
But remember that one time he did a backflip after scoring a TD?
𝗥𝗨𝗠𝗢𝗥:
Sources close to the #Jets, tell us that QB Aaron Rodgers is "pissed" they were selected to appear on Hard Knocks.
The team has a lot of work to integrate the future HOF'er into the offense and he would prefer "to limit the distractions."
Tucker Kraft:
-Under contract for 2026
-On track to earn PPE raise
-Cannot be extended until AFTER 2025 regular season
-Will be a very rich man next year
-Should not step on a practice field in camp until his new deal is signed
Ages of the Packers players in this photo:

Very excited to watch this young core grow together!📈📈📈
The Packers have paid Jaire Alexander $45,326,000 (minus some per-game and workou bonuses) and have only accounted for $17,870,000 on their salary cap.
The $27,456,000 difference is dead cap if he's gone in 2024. So unless things go nuclear, expect Jaire back in Green Bay, OK?
It *appears* Romeo Doubs did not address the team after coming back from his team suspension and then dodged the media after practice to take accountability. Jaire Alexander did both after his suspension.
He may be back, but I'm not certain all is resolved with Romeo.
Davante Adams:
🔹Received a 3 year, $67.8M deal ($22.6M APY)
🔹Disguised as a 5 year, $140.2M deal ($28M APY)
There is zero chance he makes it to years 4 & 5 on the deal - these years are intentionally bloated to artificially boost him up to claim the "highest paid WR" title.
I’m told the Packers are canceling Wednesday practice and will instead conduct 90 minutes of lower body stretches followed by 40 minutes of drinking Gatorade to combat future hamstring injuries & cramps.
Both are true:
1⃣Aaron Jones was awesome on & off the field while in Green Bay - Dude rocked the Green & Gold. Loved him.
2⃣Aaron Jones now plays for a rival of my favorite team. I wish him & his team no harm but much negative success on the field, as it's best for the Packers.
Remember when Justin Fields said the speed of the NFL game was “actually kind of slow to me” after playing one pre-season game?
Good times 😂
I bet he wishes this ass-beating by Tampa Bay would “speed up” so he can get off the field in one piece.
Packers go 1-5 in their division. Both games against the Bears decided on the final play, and won their only matchup on a rare field goal block.
Packers have some work to do take back the North in 2025.
Green Bay Packers' trade of Preston Smith will create:
🔹$2,023,529 of 2024 salary cap space
🔹$7,626,000 of 2025 salary cap space
🔹$18,207,000 of 2026 salary cap space
🔹$1,667,000 of 2027 salary cap space
The Packers have 4 former 1st rounders on their defensive line and struggle to make meaningful impact during the game - they are almost non-existent while rushing 4.
There is either a massive talent problem, a coaching problem, or both.
I continue to be baffled as to each week we hear Head Coach Matt LaFleur continue to say they need to run the ball more, or need to get Aaron Jones more involved earlier, or need to stay committed to the run like he isn't the guy holding the call sheet and radioing in the calls.
As expected, David Bakhtiari filed for injury protection benefit from the Packers after being released with a failed physical designation before the 2024 season.
He will receive $2,050,000 with $1,230,000 counting against the Packers 2024 salary cap for this claim.
Jaire Alexander's contract had $53.66M remaining cap cost over the next 2 seasons. Releasing his will leave behind $17.04M ($7.52 in 2025 $9.52 in 2026).
The Packers create $36.62M of cap space the team GREATLY needs heading into next offseason.
Aaron Rodgers, great player when healthy
David Bakhtiari, great player when healthy
Aaron Jones, great player when healthy
Packers trying to get younger and minimize the "when healthy" monikers on their roster.
40 year old QB, Million knee surgeries, 30 year old RB are high risk players to stay healthy.
"Scared money don't make money"
"All gas, no fucking brake"
"Wake up with your piss hot"
Fun quotes for mid-week headlines & throwing on a T-shirt, but in no way reflect the identity of the Green Bay Packers over the 7-year tenure of Matt LaFleur.
Consistently Inconsistent...
Sure are a lot of people who spent all last year slamming the Packers selection of AJ Dillon in the 2nd round now jumping on the AJ Dillon HypeTrain Bandwagon 😏
All offseason I heard losing Tight Ends Robert Tonyan & Marcedes Lewis to the Bears was going to cause significant issues for this Packers team.
After watching 60 minutes of football I don’t think I saw or heard anything of significance either player did for the Bears today.
