How to enable a BIP 39 Passphrase, and a dummy wallet on your KeepKey!
This'll be a 3-minute read, but it'll be worth it! Let's get started!
A. What is a BIP 39 Passphrase and a dummy wallet?
A BIP 39 passphrase is like a secret code made up of random words that only you know. It's used to unlock your wallet and access your money. So in simple words, KeepKey is your vault, and your passphrase is your secret key to the vault.
⚠️ Quick caveat: IF you ever forget or lose this passphrase, even KeepKey can not help you.
B. Setting up the passphrase!
You will be creating a new wallet. If you have funds on this device, you will need to move them after creating the wallet to the one with the passphrase or recover from your seedphrase.
1. Launch KeepKey desktop
2. Go to settings > KeepKey > Passphrase
3. Click enable seed phrase
4. Confirm on device
5. Enter your PIN
6. KeepKey Desktop will restart
7. Enter your PIN
8. You are now asked to enter your passphrase.
C. How to use your passphrase.
After you've created a passphrase, you simply use it by typing it in after your PIN when you launch the KeepKey desktop.
D. Confirm your passphrase on your KeepKey
If the Passphrase was not entered correctly, unplug and replug the device to reset the login.
*If you type in and confirm an incorrect passphrase, KeepKey will create a new wallet under this incorrect passphrase.
*This is how you create a dummy wallet, that has perhaps a small amount of tokens to look like it’s in use, but in reality, most or all of your tokens are protected under the wallet with the correct passphrase.
