I believe codifying, sharing and rehearsing good practice is essential for ‘professional equity’ - supporting all teachers to be their very best (something @Josh_CPD and I are talking about @researchEDWarr). However codification is sometimes be perceived as restrictive. /1

For me, this image from Peps' thread says it all re: how hard we're continuously thinking about making the deconstruction of great teaching CLEAR, EASY TO NAVIGATE and PURPOSE-DRIVEN.

Organising effective teaching around a model of learning can help mitigate this risk... As the purpose of each technique is embedded in the very structure of the hierarchy. And if this hierarchy is explored during coaching, then we're more likely to build adaptive expertise.

This fits with Mary Kennedy’s idea that good CPD needs to balance four “humours”: 1) content knowledge, 2) responsive teaching, 3) managing attention and theory of learning, and 4) classroom management. It’s a good paper. I think this is the right link: journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs…

🔥Two important arguments here: 1) We must move away from whole-school inset-style CPD and towards an Instructional Coaching model... 2) To achieve this, build a culture where teachers know that improvement requires constant effort. These two combined = perfect CPD.

Just giving teachers information isn’t enough to bring about a real change to practice. Even if we help teachers to generate new insights or adopt new goals, to help teachers change, we need to help them to change their habits.
