As everyone understandably looks at the MPs defeated let’s not forget their staff. The people who do casework, deal with constituents, run the offices, organise the campaigns & much more. They’ve just lost their jobs too. Thank you for all your hard work.
First day in the new job!
Down to Parliament today to start getting set-up, ready to represent the people of West Ham & Beckton.
#WestHamAndBeckton#Newham
A huge honour to be elected as the new chair of @UKLabour National Executive Committee for 2023/24.
Thanks to my NEC colleagues for putting their trust in me and to the Socialist Societies for their support in electing me as their rep for the last 8 years.
#Lab23
Very honoured to be elected chair of the Labour NEC Equalities Committee. Thanks to all my colleagues for their trust and support. We’ve lots to do but I’m looking forward to the challenge.
Yesterday the LGBT PLP gathered for a photo, diaries being what they are not everyone could be there, this is about 2/3 of us MPs & peers
It’s the biggest group of out Labour MPs ever elected.
I’m honoured to have been elected as co-chair of the group alongside @deirdrecostigan
Wonderful to see Margaret take her seat in the Lords yesterday.
It was a privilege & education to sit next to her for 9 years on the NEC.
Below a clip from election night October 1974 when she was first elected. 50 years on she holds the record as the longest-serving woman MP.
ALT Dame Margaret Beckett being sworn in as a member of the House of Lords.
Honoured to have been elected vice-chair of @UKLabour NEC today.
Congratulations to my old friend & colleague @JohannaBaxter elected as the new NEC chair.
Looking forward to supporting Jo and working with all the Labour team & members as we build on #Lab22 towards the election.
A thread worth reading. A tale of incompetence, dereliction of duty and homophobia. The assistant commissioner says the Met isn’t institutionally homophobic but I don’t know any gay men who believe her!
Huge day yesterday as families and friends of serial killer Stephen Port's victims were totally vindicated by an inquest jury.
They conducted their own investigations, linked the deaths, and warned officers about the danger to gay men
They'd seen what the Met Police would not
Today I was sworn in as the new MP for West Ham & Beckton.
An incredible honour and a privilege, and a moment I’ll never forget.
Thank you to everyone who supported me and made this possible.
An honour to be selected to stand for Labour in West Ham & Beckton
The place I’ve made my home, including the area I represented as a councillor for 6 years
I’m looking forward to continue working with & serving the local community in one of the most vibrant borough’s in London
The final phase of pavement works on #MitchellWalk has been completed, creating a new walking🚶🏻♂️& cycling 🚲 route through the heart of #Beckton#Newham (1/4)
Back home after #Lab19 - re-elected to the NEC for a third term. Here’s to the next 2 years! Thanks to all the @SocialistSocs for their support and confidence in me.
I was on the NEC panel selecting candidates in the south east last year. We made a good choice in @RosieDuffield1 for Canterbury. She won a seat we didn’t expect to gain & has been a superb MP. We need more MPs like Rosie and to support the ones we’ve got!
Great to formally launch my campaign for West Ham & Beckton today. 🌹
A big thank you to everyone who came to support and all who have been out this week campaigning for Labour.

As a member of Labour’s NEC this is news to me. We’ve not been notified of a meeting. Any decisions on the future of the Party and the leadership must be made by the full NEC not the small officer’s group.
NEW: John McDonnell suggests Corbyn will remain as Labour leader into February.
"Th NEC officers meet next week, they'll decide the timetable for a leadership election in the New Year.
"It will be the usual time - a couple of months or something...
"Then Jeremy will hand over"
I vote for Remain; I’ve not changed my mind. It’s a shambles & we can now see that clearly. Labour policy is not pro-Brexit. If there’s an election I won’t campaign on a pro-Brexit platform. Nor will I campaign for any candidate who thinks turning Brexit to Lexit makes it better!
I’m know that @UKLabour will stand up to the small fringe groups trying to discriminate against Trans women. As a member of the NEC I shall certainly be standing up for the Trans community & I’m certain my NEC colleagues will too.
Pleased to be appointed #Newham cabinet member for the environment this evening at the Council AGM. Looking forward to the challenge of an important area of work.
My first week in Parliament has been an incredible experience. Exhilarating and a little daunting in places.
Ready for the King’s Speech next week; getting on with supporting delivering our manifesto; and continuing to set up the new office for West Ham & Beckton.

The CIA once released a guide on how to sabotage an organization, and I can’t shake the feeling that we’re voluntarily implementing these tactics today
The new #DLR trains have started to be delivered to #Beckton depot. 🚆
Looking forward to a more modern design, longer trains and more space. Will be much better for everyone relying on the DLR in the south & west of #Newham

Lib Dems spent months claiming Mid Beds is just like the south west & they would win. They then moved onto attacking Labour’s candidate
There is now a Lib Dem MP on TV saying it’s very different to areas they win but they helped Labour.
The Lib Dems are utterly shameless!
Appalling ignorance and abuse towards @Chinese4Labour on Twitter today. They’re a great campaigning @SocialistSocs and Labour Party affiliate and I’m very proud to represent them on the Labour NEC #ChineseForLabour
Today I finished as chair of @UKLabour Equalities ctte,Work commitment as NEC vice-chair & in Newham meant it’s time for change
Equalities campaigning got me into politics so being chair has been an honour
Congrats to new chair @angelaeagle who brings vast experience to the job
Delighted to be reappointed to the #Newham cabinet continuing to lead on environment & sustainable transport.
Also very honoured to be appointed by @rokhsanafiaz as statutory deputy mayor.
I’m looking forward to the challenge, to working with the community & serving the borough
Congratulations to a friend and colleague @angelaeagle for a well deserved honour for her dedicated political service and being a great champion & fighter for #LGBT rights bbc.com/news/uk-england-mers…
Last NEC of conference tonight, which is also the handover meeting in which we say goodbye to outgoing colleagues and hello to the newly elected. Sad to say farewell to Keith Birch who’s been a good friend & ally over many years but wish him a very happy retirement! #Lab19
We’ve been testing an electric bin lorry this week as part of our planning for future waste collections. Results look very positive. Plus residents on roads it’s been down have commented how much quieter it is - a bonus for those of us who get early morning collections! #Newham
We’re working hard to keep @NewhamLondon environment services running over the weeks ahead. Bin/recycling collections are still running as usual. Thanks to our waste service staff who are working hard to deliver the service. Please bear with us when we need to make changes
It would’ve been #PrideInLondon. 🏳️🌈 We couldn’t meet but we can be proud of what we’ve achieved so far. More to do. And we’ll make it bigger and twice the celebration next year. #PrideMonth#PRIDE2020 ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤍💗🤎🖤
Looking towards Canary Wharf from the Royal Victoria Dock Bridge. A very still night tonight and the lights were incredibly bright reflecting off the dock.
A full day #LabourNEC to pick a new General Secretary. It’s going to be slightly odd doing it on Zoom; but we’re getting used to that now and it’s a very important decision for the Party.
Yesterday I asked my first question in Parliament.
After seeing the great work being done by @Ldn_Ambulance at their education centre during a visit by education minister @Jacqui_Smith1 I asked about apprenticeships
Access to good quality education, training & skills is vital.
Thank you to everyone who has been kind to, and thanked @NewhamLondon bin crews for working so hard through the crisis to keep the rubbish cleared. 🚚 #Newham
Today I raised the threat of closure of East London Gymnastics Centre in Beckton. Highlighting the impact and loss to our community also raised by @SaveELGC campaigners & @newhamvoices
It is important we have good local sports facilities like this & protect them for the future
Good to be joined by Anwar Choudhury former High Commissioner to Bangladesh yesterday and great to have his support for the 4th July.
#WestHamAndBeckton#VoteLabour
Phase 2 of Mitchell Walk improvements in #Beckton almost complete. Uneven steps & unsafe path removed, dense bushes gone, overgrown trees trimmed. Replaced by a new path accessible to all. Another step in delivering a promise to get this important local route fixed. #NewhamLondon
What we’ve seen in the last few days is violent criminality, thuggery & racism.
There’s nothing patriotic about attacking people, rioting, racism, looting or arson.
The real patriots are those who’ve helped clear up, supported those who were targeted & build communities.

Speaking on @LGBTLabour & @tpCoalition panel at Labour Conference on discrimination against LGBT people in the workplace, following @The_TUC research that 52% of LGBT people faced harassment in the workplace.
We must find ways to reduce discrimination & make workplaces safer.
In 2019 we teamed up with @TreesforCities to plant thousands of saplings in #Beckton District Park. 🌱 The trees are now shooting up creating new woodland for #Newham 🌳 #LCAW2022
Who remembers these? We were told they would be essential for every job we ever applied for, and that if we didn't take them seriously we would basically end up on the dole for life.
Mine has been in a cupboard at my parents' house for 19 years.
It’s #NationalComingOutDay, for me that was 28 years ago this month. That sounds like a very long time ago; but I’ve never regretted it once! 🌈 (But what happen the lad in the picture?! 🤔)
Pleased to be appointed as Newham’s for Assistant Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways & Sustainable Transport supporting @rectripp & @zulfiqar1107
Looking forward to the challenge but there’s lots to get stuck into!
Very long but productive Labour NEC meeting today. Very pleased we re-affirmed the Party’s existing position on inclusion for Trans women in the Party.
Proud to stand with @JewishLabour and all my Jewish friends & comrades today who are fighting anti-Semitism. Mortified that it was necessary to do so. I’m committed to continuing the fight against anti-Semitism and to driving it from @UKLabour
Our street tree planting programme has been underway in the last month across #Newham. Over 300 trees planted as we fill in empty tree pits and increase our tree cover. I spotted these in the last few weeks. #Trees#StreetTrees#NewhamLondon
A huge thank you to Lyn for her dedicated commitment to West Ham as MP and for over 35 years public service to Newham. That’s a fantastic record and one to be proud of.
A personal thanks from me for all her support during my time at Newham Council.
I have loved being the MP for West Ham and I love it still. Standing down will be such a huge wrench. But, given the challenges we have in Newham and the health challenges I've faced this year, I think we need new Labour MPs to take us forward with a Labour Government.
Whoever won my first question to them at the NEC was going to be how will we deal with antisemitism. Pleased to see this letter go out the day he was elected and the moves to today to engage with the Jewish community. Time to finally deal end this hate & bigotry in our Party.
Good news to end the week. New study shows Low Traffic Neighbourhoods #LTNs cut road injuries by half. Prioritising people and residents makes roads safer theguardian.com/world/2021/j…

Delighted to support Labour’s candidate for the #Beckton ward council by-election @blossomyoung
A local resident and campaigner with a wealth of valuable work experience too, Blossom will be a great representative for the residents of Beckton.

Some incredible work going on and things being grown on our #allotments including one plot getting ready for Halloween with this gigantic pumpkin! 🎃 And it was enormous.

I agree with Alice. There are huge practical issues in running polling stations given the shared nature of the polling booths. Finding volunteers to staff them will be harder. Turnout may be dire too. Plus sending canvassers door-to-door seems counter to all advice.
This morning I joined the Mayor of Newham, Deputy Mayor of London & local councillors at the Twelve Trees Park Development in West Ham.
This will bring 3800 new homes, new secondary school, community facilities, a new bridge to and entrance into West Ham tube station.
