The untold story of how we turned a backyard bbq into the best bitcoin mining event in the world.
In December 2021, me and
@FracSlap wanted to plan a bbq to bring together friends in energy and bitcoin mining.
How hard could a bbq be? So we set a date 8 weeks out.
After dozens of conversations, we realized this wasn’t a bbq - this was something much bigger.
Oh shit, we’re gonna need a bigger space.
We decide to takeover 8th Wonder Brewery.
The venue itself wasn’t big enough to fit multiple tents/stages - so we shut down 3 streets around 8th Wonder.
Tickets are rolling in - 400, 500…
We’ve never done anything this big before.
Since we’re doing this festival style, we have to build infrastructure.
Tents, A/V, Generators, Bathrooms, Food Trucks, Police Officers, etc
Tickets are climbing - 600, 700..
…but so are costs - like our entire previous years’ revenue.
We can’t let this turn into a Fyre Festival. We push all our chips in.
We put together 2 content tracks - energy and mining - and our speaker list is absolutely stacked.
Word is getting out, momentum is building and we’re hype AF - I think we’re going to pull this off.
…but there’s one major problem.
We’re 4 weeks out and have zero sponsors. Tickets alone aren’t enough to cover our costs.
It’s a first year event and many people in the bitcoin mining space have no clue who we are.
We hit the phones, sell the vision and land 25 sponsors in 4 weeks.
WGMI.
Empower rolls around and 1,200 people excited about the intersection of bitcoin mining and energy take over that brewery for 2 days.
In under 8 weeks, against the odds, we accidentally created the best bitcoin mining event in the world.
That was one hell of a bbq.
