If the GOP was a normal political party, then DeSantis would be a logical heir to Trump. But it's not. So the post-Trump succession will look more like The Death of Stalin than 1988. thetriad.thebulwark.com/p/ka…
Unless Trump comes out against it. At which point the numbers flip within five mins. See free trade, Russia, gov.t. bullying of private enterprise . . .
The percentage of Republicans who oppose allowing same-sex marriage has plunged from 84 to 31.
Acceptance of gay marriage is fast becoming the majority position *within* the GOP.
Republican senators who oppose it are on the wrong side of their own party. bit.ly/3U6OuDl
Today we've published @saletan's book-length dissection of what happened to Lindsey Graham.
It's not a dunk-fest. It's a reconstruction of Graham's own words tracing his evolution in the service of understanding how authoritarians gain power.
The corruption of the business side of Fox seems like an even bigger deal than the corruption of the front-of-the-house operation.

It’s important to understand the aspirational longings of political movements. There is a large portion of the American right that wishes it could do to journalists what Putin just did to Vladimir Kara-Murza.

Fact check: In today's Triad I said that Vladimir Putin was “Trump’s favorite dictator.”
Trump has said that Egyptian President el-Sisi is “his favorite dictator.”
I regret the error.

Trump’s authoritarian attempt presented four tests to:
1) The institutional Republican party
2) The general public
3) The rule of law
4) Republican voters
Two groups have passed, one has failed, and the other is preparing for its final exam.

Never Trumpers: Hey, Republicans, he might win again. Get your shit together, quick.
Anti-Anti Trumpers: You grifters can't stop talking about him because you need him so much. True Conservatives move on from Trump by *not* talking about him.
How big is the Always Trump faction of the Republican Party?
According to our new poll, 28 percent.
And they are why the GOP could be sleepwalking into another Donald Trump catastrophe. thebulwark.com/exclusive-bul…

Never forget that CNN is the same network that hired Corey Lewandowski and put him on the air to “analyze” Trump even though the man was (a) a former employee of Trump’s and (b) bound by an NDA to Trump.
That kind of malpractice should end.

Everything is logistics.

Trump in office will be a second-term lame duck who never wanted to run a WH; whatever de facto powers Pence enjoyed, even a semi-competent second term VP will be able to accrue many more.
The Trump era taught us that the social cons didn't care about morality. The libertarians didn't care about freedom. The conservatives didn't care about small govt.
And now we see that the pro-business Rs don't care about business.

@DavidAsmanfox Can you tell me more about the $10,000 Ford F-150 Lightning? I'm trying to track this down to see if the claim you made on air yesterday is true. I cannot find evidence that anyone, anywhere in America, is selling a Ford F-150 Lightning for $10k.

The Big Question:
If RFK Jr. was running in the Republican primary, what place would he be polling in?
I think he'd be fairly close to DeSantis and way ahead of slots #4 - #9.
Epic new pod:
- @amandacarpenter’s last show 😞
- righteous ranting about GOP response to Hunter
- RFK as a Trump VP option? (Heard it here first)
- I try to explain poppers without dying from embarrassment.
Enjoy!

Trump found himself on the wrong side of the religious right after he blamed anti-abortion activists for midterm losses. How's he going to respond when DeSantis signs a 6-week abortion ban?

.@saletan uses Graham because he's a case-study for a larger phenomenon: The conservative and Republican establishment's transformation. One key insight: Authoritarians gain power by coopting existing elite institutions and actors.
This by @JVLast is very good and uses some of my recent focus groups to make an important point about how/why voters decide to like political candidates. thetriad.thebulwark.com/p/th…

What brings the coalition together is a set of shared antipathies. These subgroups all hate the same people: "the Left."
But even here, "the Left" isn't really a coherent set.
Does it matter that DeSantis is caught in a bunch of contradictory positions? Or that he can't square the circle on January 6?
If Republican voters have already decided that they like him then . . . probably not. And Trump will be in trouble.

Gal Luft story is BONKERS. You have to believe that Luft was doing totally-okay stuff with the same CCP people who involved with the Biden Crime Family.
And also that Trump's DoJ squashed his whistleblowing bc of an FBI mole code-named One Eye.

As expected DeSantis hits Trump from the anti-vax "right".
The two best things Trump did, Operation Warp Speed & First Step Act are the first attacks out of the gate from DeSantis. At what point does this become too much for the remaining normie Rs to swallow?

But when a political coalition is based purely around *resentment*? And when the resented "other" is fluid?
Then everyone gets to be first among equals because there are no trade-offs.
Policy is a zero-sum game.
Resentment is a win-win game.
