HOW THE CUP WAS WON 🏆 Been quiet on this front lately for a variety of reasons, but no more obvious way to end the season than trying to breakdown the showpiece game. Have a read below for my take on how Pats claimed the FAI Cup on Sunday 🔴⚪️

PATS UNDER KENNY 🧵👇🏻 I’ve had a look at some of the immediate improvements Pats have already made in terms of style under Stephen Kenny. Clear instruction to play a brand of possession based progressive football

PATS V ROVERS 🧵👇🏻 Felt like a huge 3 points for Pats Thursday night. Had very little of the ball but controlled the game with how they set up out of possession limiting Rovers to very little. Had a look at how Pats set up and a change in setup second half gets their reward

PATS V DUNDALK - MD5 Change of shape and a big 3 points for Pats on Friday night. Very noticeable how much more effective having an extra number higher up the park was, particularly in wide areas I’ve had a look again at what jumped out to me🧵👇🏻

GALWAY V PATS - MD1 🧵👇🏻 3 points in Galway for Pats on opening night! Shape, organisation and team selection all spot on Not one that was easy on the eye but I’ve highlighted what I thought was key in Pats picking up the win

HAVE PATS TURNED A CORNER? 🧵👇🏻 Had a look at Pats last three games, 3 wins. 10 scored and 1 conceded. Arguably games that Pats should be winning but one thing that stood out for me was support play when the ball goes forward.

PATS V ROVERS 🧵👇🏻 Had a look at what stood out as being the key to Pats getting over the line Friday night. I felt the wide areas were key and big performances from fullbacks and two holding midfielders were a huge contribution in Pats winning the game

A much better showing from Pats yesterday. Expected the set up to be much more reserved and attempt to stop Rovers while sitting much deeper. Pats actually did the opposite and set up quite high, shown here an example of their set up from Rovers goalkicks

PATS TOP OF THE TABLE! 🧵👇🏻 Unfortunately not the league table but Pats are top of the Table for long passes so far this season. Total of 855 averaging 59.24 per 90 minutes. For context Bohs are second with 761 Galway who would be perceived as a long ball team sit 8th with 669

DROGHEDA V PATS - 🧵👇🏻 Follow on from Minnesota game which saw the same starting XI last night. Same kind of problems for Pats struggling to create clear chances and progress controlled possession Leavy as a 6 and Forrester in a 10 role. I had a look at what stood out

ROVERS PRESS V PATS BUILD UP PLAY 👇🏻🧵 Looking ahead to Rovers V Pats on Friday, I’ve started looking at how Rovers press. Interesting to see how aggressive they are in their press and looking to force turnovers. V Cork they went man for man with a high press

Bohs first last night, a catalogue of errors here leading up to it. Coote picks up a position between Curtis and Lewis, afforded far too much space. Kreida actually checks his right shoulder but never his left here, basic principal of scanning we teach kids

Patient Pats • Patient build up play • High quality progressive passes • Fullbacks replacing wide players for width on ball side • Mulraney having freedom to drift inside This leads to the free kick for the equaliser on Sunday

Sjoberg being key • Most Pats attacks down their right hand side • Sjoberg 32 out of 39 passes accurate • 4 crosses attempted - 2 accurate • won 7 out of 9 defensive duels • Made 1 foul compared to being fouled himself 4 times Solid performance 💪🏻

Ireland’s set up from Goal kicks and general build up play was predictable and easy to counter for Greece. Seems like that midfield 3 were easy to play against particularly in the first half

Would be expecting Lenihan here to step across into that space, he can see it unfolding. Seemed like the box was covered with enough bodies to defend a cross. Even Cullen to drop back in and look to defend that space. Goal seemed too easily conceded at international level

I think Monday could be a struggle against a Gibraltar team that will sit in and be quite rigid and look to play on the counter. They set up 5-4-1 last night V France and a deeper 4-4-2 V Greece previously. A game that will require patience from the players and no doubt fans too

Set Piece Atheltic Credit given by Jon Daly in his post match about the staff looking after set pieces. Pats were dominant defending set pieces as well as scoring from two which ultimately won the game • Quality of delivery • Target area within the width of the posts

In for an interesting one tonight at least. May suit Pats to sit in a bit more like up in Tallaght and soak up pressure and look to counter attack, however I’m sure we’d all like to see them be a bit bolder and play more football but I’m all here for just getting the W 🔴⚪️

Good example here that seemed Ireland lacked creativity or imagination to progress the ball forward. Smallbone highlighted here drops in and takes pressure with him. Poor decision by Collins initially to attempt to step in but an example of how Ireland lacked ideas

Relentless running Can see a couple of examples here, aggressive pressing forcing Bohs long • Carty working CBS • Forrester recognising pass back to keeper as trigger to press • Redmond stepping out to challenge aerial balls • Leavys work rate to force Bohs back
1
11
1,727
Playing into pressure to play out/around pressure • Wanting players taking the ball in tight areas • Moving the ball at speed • Shorter passes to connect the game/attacking players in more dangerous areas •Building through thirds rather than back to front

Interesting stats on goals scored from U15 LOI National academy level. The amount of 1 touch finishes and amount scored between the posts for such a young age group is obvious fruits of players and coaches labour on the grass. Class from @BreakingBradss 👏🏻

Plenty of these moments I think playing forward rather than letting it develop and shortening distances to connect the game better • Keating dropping in with no support beyond • Ball played chest height difficult to bring others to play • play short and move the opposition?
1
10
9,310
2nd half example here - 1st part shows no forward run to be a threat to the Greek backline and second part when the ball does go into them areas it was so easy to defend against given the lack of support underneath and beyond the ball. Ireland had changed to a 5-2-3 at half time
1
7
9,167
Defending the lead Pats down to 10 in this example with Doyle just gone off the pitch injured - Carty fills in at left side • Allowing Centre backs to have it • Ready to press when it goes into the middle not allowing Bohs midfielders to get on it and turn • Forcing Long

Just to add to this. Stats V Sligo Monday night. Attempted passes into the penalty area 48 attempted and 16 successful ( First contact by pats player not necessarily a shot or chance created)
Pats so far this season (excluding last night) map of attempted passes into the penalty area. Clear to see the plan is to get it wide and delivered into the box.

When Ireland did go more direct and put the ball into areas they got success. Lead up to the corner which the goal came from. Tsimkas ball watching which allowed a support run beyond the ball. Smallbones run causes Mantalos to be isolated which created the space for Dohertys run
1
6

Pats struggling to create here. When it’s direct to Lonergan the support is too slow to get up around him, build out wide and same old story with crosses - Poor quality/No support in the box.

Well organised Bohs Bit of a 4-2-3-1 at times which dropped into a front kine of 4 out of possession • Denied spaces for Pats to play in centrally • Forcing to go wide • Fullback ready to jump out and engage

Pats get their rewards 🏆 • Ready to press if it looks to go central midfield • Aggressive press not allowing Bohs to turn • Forcing backwards • Capitalising on the press forcing a mistake

When Ireland were able to play through and break the Greek midfield line it seemed everything to feet looking for tight combinations that weren’t quite there. Can see Molumby here highlighted picking up a good area but it never seemed like there was an idea what to do next

Half time. We’ve been brilliant. Bang

Ireland off the ball seemed a bit disjointed and flat. Greece continually got out by switching the play out left and Tsimikas constantly had acres to play in. O’Dowda stepped up to press the fullback when Greece built out but it never seemed replicated on Dohertys side

Pats went with a back 3 V Derry but changed to a 4 V Shels. With a back four against Shels it allowed Lennon and Forrester drop deeper to assist with playing out/Build up

Again Irelands flat midfield 3 here was a common theme first half, it was easy for Greece to switch play and play through when the time was right. Lenihan highlighted here dragged out of position and Greece get in behind. Can see him pointing telling one of the 3 ahead to pick up

🔴 Full Time ⚪️ Lanarkshire is Red and White! 😏 A @ChloeMuir17 header in the second half sees Accies take all 3 points at Fir Park. Reaction to follow.

The problem is accuracy here. From first 3 games Pats have had 10 successful crosses (accurate crosses) meaning first contact from a pats player not a chance created
2

Pats 3-5-2 seems more suited to nullifying teams and playing on the counter, the frustration is when it’s deployed against teams that will sit deeper and the space is in front rather than in behind.

Again I think Pats were well organised defensively particularly in open play and allowed Derry to create very little. I think losing a centre back especially for games at home and against teams that will sit in more will help in getting forward and creating chances

Pats change to 4-2-3-1 • Provided space for Centre backs to step in or switch the play from more central areas • Redmond able to switch play from more central area rather than being in a fullback area building up • Wide player stepping inside and occupying fullbacks
