ALT We are devastated to hear that close colleagues, Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) medics, have been killed while performing their lifesaving work in Deir al Balah, Gaza. This is unacceptable. We call on the parties to this conflict to respect their obligations and ensure humanitarian work can be carried out safely. Together with the PRCS, we mourn the loss of these lifesaving staff members. This ambulance team worked relentlessly in horrific conditions to reduce the suffering of the wounded and sick in Gaza over the last three months. We offer our sincere condolences to their family members. International humanitarian law is clear. Medical personnel should never lose their own lives while providing support to their community. We condemn any attack on healthcare workers. All parties to this conflict must respect the humanitarian mission of the PRCS and other first responders.

ALT The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is devastated to learn that Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) staff, Yusuf Zeino and Ahmed Al-Madhoun, were killed while on a medical mission to rescue six-year-old Hind Ragab in Gaza City. For nearly two weeks, the fate of Hind, her family members, and the PRCS first responders has been unknown. We are heartbroken by the reports that all were killed. Our deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Hind and her family, and those of Yusuf and Ahmed.

ALT Civilians must be protected – no child should ever be terrified for their life, surrounded by the bodies of their family members. That these were potentially Hind’s last moments is unbearable. Her case illustrates what thousands of children in Gaza have felt in the last four months – this should shock us all.

ALT Medical personnel must be protected and allowed to safely conduct their work, including being able to access those in need. First responders are risking their lives every day to provide support to the population in Gaza. They should never have to fear being killed while conducting their lifesaving work for the community. Earlier this week, the ICRC publicly expressed its condolences for a PRCS staff member who was killed. Last week, the ICRC expressed condolences for three PRCS staff members who were killed. In January, the ICRC expressed condolences that four PRCS staff members were killed.

ALT The high number of killed medical personnel during this escalation is appalling. The ICRC strongly condemns all attacks on healthcare workers. International humanitarian law provides clear protections to civilians and medical and humanitarian personnel. Parties to this conflict must respect their obligations.

ALT We mourn alongside the Palestine Red Crescent Society the killing of International Red Cross and Red Crescent members this week in Khan Younis – Naeem Hasan Al-Jabali, Khalid Kulab, and Hidaya Hamad. Our deepest condolences are with their families and loved ones. Every day in Gaza, humanitarian workers are risking their lives. They must be protected. This seriously affects the ability of the Palestine Red Crescent Society, and indeed all humanitarian workers, to provide lifesaving aid to those who need it most.

ALT Heavy-calibre projectiles landed within metres of the office and residences of the International Committee of the Red Cross on Friday afternoon.. The strike damaged the structure of the ICRC office, which is surrounded by hundreds of displaced civilians living in tents, including many of our Palestinian colleagues. This incident caused a mass casualty influx at the nearby Red Cross Field Hospital, with the hospital receiving 22 killed and 45 injured, with reports of additional casualties. Firing so dangerously close to humanitarian structures, of whose locations the parties to the conflict are aware and which are clearly marked with the Red Cross emblem, puts the lives of civilians and Red Cross staff at risk.This grave security incident is one of several in recent days; previously stray bullets have reached ICRC structures. We decry these incidents that put the lives of humanitarians and civilians at risk.

ALT It is 100 days, and 136 men, women, and children are still being held hostage in Gaza. Every day counts. Even one day can be an eternity for the person being held captive, and for the family and friends who don’t have contact with them, who have no idea if they are alive or dead, no idea of their medical condition, and who fear the worst. Each day is filled with anguish and despair – and here we mark 100 of these days. Hostage-taking is strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law. All hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally. We know this pain cannot end until all hostages are home. We will continue to work relentlessly for that to happen until the day they are home.

ALT Our heartfelt condolences go out to Omar’s family, colleagues, and friends. Omar was killed and other staff were injured during an overnight attack on the PRCS building in Khan Younis. Omar and the other injured colleagues were on duty in a clearly marked Palestine Red Crescent Society’s (PRCS) building. PRCS provides essential support to communities in Gaza. It is unacceptable that first responders in Gaza – like Omar and staff and volunteers of the PRCS – go to work every day fearing they may not return to their families. It is an outrage that so many staff and volunteers of the PRCS and other first responders have been killed and injured in the last 21 months of conflict. Humanitarian relief personnel and objects used for humanitarian relief operations must be respected and protected in all circumstances. They must never be attacked. All feasible measures must be taken to ensure their safety.

ALT Al-Amal Hospital, operated by the PRCS, Nasser Medical Complex, and Al Shifa hospitals once again find themselves in the midst of the ongoing hostilities. We are extremely concerned by the reports of the ongoing military operations in and around hospital grounds. All measures need to be taken to protect and spare the medical staff and civilians inside the hospital. #HealthCareinDanger Since the beginning of hostilities, PRCS staff and volunteers have continued to courageously provide emergency medical services to communities in Gaza, amidst unacceptably high levels of loss, including the killing of 15 colleagues and damages to crucial facilities, like Al-Amal and Al-Quds Hospitals, and emergency vehicles.

ALT We are heartbroken by the death of two of our dear colleagues, Ibrahim Eid and Ahmad Abu Hilal, who were killed in a strike on their home in Khan Younis on the 24th of May, 2025. Ibrahim worked as a Weapon Contamination Officer for the ICRC and Ahmad worked as a Security Guard at the Red Cross Field Hospital in Rafah. We extend our profound condolences to their families, friends, and colleagues. Their loss leaves a deep hole in our hearts. Their killing points to the intolerable civilian death toll in Gaza. The ICRC reiterates its urgent call for a ceasefire and for the respect and protection of civilians, including medical, humanitarian relief, and civil defence personnel.

I spoke to a mother who had gone with her 15-year-old daughter to try and access food for their family. Many of these women are now the main provider for their extended families as well. This young girl saw her mother shot and bleeding on the ground. They told me they thought it would be safe, but now they know ‘nowhere in Gaza is safe’. The toll this is taking on people, and the medical facilities that receive them, continues to grow – lives are being irrevocably changed.” -Felicity Gapes, ICRC Deputy Health Coordinator in Gaza.

ALT Early morning on 1 June, the 60-bed Red Cross Field Hospital in Rafah received a mass casualty influx of 179 cases, including women and children. The majority suffered gunshot or shrapnel wounds. Twenty-one patients were declared dead upon arrival. All patients said they had been trying to reach an aid distribution site. This is the highest number of weapon-wounded in a single incident since the establishment of the field hospital over a year ago. It far surpassed the capacity of the hospital. Hospital staff treated patients as per our triage procedures, and some cases were referred to other facilities for further treatment. This process, however, remains complicated due to many medical facilities being damaged or rendered out of service.

ALT The reality on the ground in Gaza is that for months now, civilians have had to navigate the areas affected by intense hostilities to find food and safe water for their families. The high number of dead and injured patients received in a short amount of time is indicative of the increasing danger to civilians who have already struggled to survive for almost twenty months of unimaginable hostilities. This is unacceptable.

ALT International humanitarian law is clear: the rapid and unimpeded flow of humanitarian relief must be allowed and facilitated. This is crucial to ensure that medical supplies, food, water, hygiene items, and other essentials reach those in need. Humanitarian organizations have proven track records of distributing humanitarian assistance to civilians in an effective, safe, and dignified manner. They must be allowed to respond at scale and in accordance with the Fundamental Principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence. The small amount of assistance currently entering Gaza is nowhere near enough to meet the needs, and the desperation of civilians to reach any of this assistance is growing.

Tragically, 16 were declared dead on arrival, and three more died of their wounds shortly thereafter. The vast majority of patients suffered gunshot injuries, with all responsive individuals reporting they were wounded while on their way to an aid distribution site. Since the 27 May, the field hospital has had to activate its mass casualty procedures 20 times. The scale and frequency of these incidents is an alarming testament to the intolerable dangers civilians face as they attempt to access assistance. Civilians must have access to food, water, medical supplies, hygiene items, and other essentials. The rapid and unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance aid must be allowed and facilitated. Those injured must receive the urgent medical care and attention they need as soon as possible.

Mohammed Awad Allah Musa was killed while providing medical support on a private ambulance in Nablus. We are deeply saddened by the death and injury of these medical workers, and our heartfelt condolences go to Mohammed's family, colleagues, and friends, and to the Palestine Red Crescent Society. Access to medical care can be a matter of life and death. It is crucial that all work to fully respect and protect the medical mission at all times. Ambulances and medical workers are #NotATarget.

ALT The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) urges the immediate respect and protection of civilians by all parties during increased military operations in Gaza. Constant care must be taken to spare them. In the last few days, hundreds of civilians have been killed and injured while others are believed to still be under the rubble. The ICRC hotline has received hundreds of calls in recent days from people desperate for help. Entire families are trapped and are desperately seeking safety and security. The needs in Gaza are overwhelming and are beyond our capacity to respond.

ALT We have started a multi-phase operation to facilitate the release and transfer of hostages and detainees as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The complex operation, which takes place at the request of the parties, is crucial to reuniting separated families. The ICRC’s role in this operation is that of a neutral intermediary, and is strictly humanitarian. The parties to the conflict determined the terms of the ceasefire agreement, including the individuals to be released and the timeline; the ICRC was not involved in the negotiations. It is the responsibility of the parties to the agreement to ensure these operations are conducted safely and with dignity.
