Israel's leading academic and research institution, serving 25,000 students from 90 countries.

Jerusalem
For a hundred years, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been a home for extraordinary individuals—those who question, challenge conventions, and push boundaries. The innovators, the changemakers, the pioneers who carve new paths and ensure they remain open. It all began with a remarkable group of intellectual giants, including Albert Einstein, Chaim Weizmann, Chaim Nachman Bialik, Sigmund Freud, and Martin Buber, who united to realize a shared vision: the establishment of the Hebrew University. They, along with many others, founded a pioneering academic institution dedicated to training leaders in research, science, public service, and society—for the benefit of Israel and all of humanity. From the moment this vision became reality, the University has placed excellence in research and teaching at its core. Over the years, it has become a hub of knowledge and innovation, fostering groundbreaking research across diverse fields and cultivating generations of leaders, scholars, and thinkers. The Hebrew University celebrates the safe return of Dr. Shoshan Haran after enduring a harrowing 50 days in captivity under the Hamas in Gaza. Dr. Haran, an esteemed alumna of @HUJIAgri in Rehovot, is renowned as the founder of the FairPlanet organization, dedicated to providing vital vegetable seeds to farmers in Africa. Her impactful contributions also extend to research within the Hebrew University's Glocal International Development Studies program. Horrifically, Dr. Haran was abducted on October 7th, along with six other family members, from their home in Kibbutz Be'eri by the Hamas. Thankfully, as of last night, Dr. Haran was released from Hamas' captivity and safely returned to Israel alongside five of her family members: her daughter, Adi Shoham; her granddaughters Yahel (3 years old) and Nave (8 years old); her sister-in-law Sharon Avigdori, and her daughter Noam Avigdori. Despite this relief, the family's anguish persists as Shoshan's son-in-law, Tal Shoham, remains captive. Our heartfelt prayers continue to be with him for a safe and swift return.

Gaza is poor but the Hamas is rich. How did this happen? Hamas effectively diversified its sources of funding, enabling it to consolidate control over Gaza and bolster its military capabilities, even as the local population is destitute. Both the Palestinian Authority and Israel, by failing to stem the flow of funds, unintentionally contributed to supporting Hamas in Gaza. Israel's lapse extends beyond intelligence and military readiness; it also involves tracking and comprehending how these funds were utilized. A group of Israeli international law experts, including Prof. @tomerbroude, Prof. Guy Harpaz, Prof. @yuvalshany1, Prof. Moshe Hirsch, Prof. David Kretzmer, and Prof. @YaelRonen5 from the Faculty of Law at the Hebrew University, have issued an open letter to the International Community, including United Nations Human Rights bodies, urging the immediate release of all the hostages held in Gaza. The letter states that: On October 7, 2023, Hamas militants entered Israel, killing hundreds of civilians and taking dozens of hostages, including children, women and the elderly. These actions are serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, constituting war crimes and crimes against humanity. All parties in armed conflicts must adhere to international legal norms, including the protection of civilians and the prohibition of indiscriminate attacks. The taking of hostages is a clear breach of international law, and we demand the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. Until their release, they must be treated with dignity, provided medical care, and allowed means of communication. We call on the international community, including states and international organizations, to exert pressure for the hostages' immediate release. Link to the full letter: verfassungsblog.de/open-lett…

The Association of University Heads, including the President of the Hebrew University, Prof. Asher Cohen, released a statement expressing profound concern regarding the surge of violence, anti-Semitism, and anti-Israel sentiments proliferating across numerous prominent universities in the USA. They emphasized the alarming trend, exacerbated by the backing of Palestinian organizations, including those identified as terrorist entities: "Freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate are vital to the health of any democracy and are especially crucial in academic settings. We continue to uphold the importance of these freedoms, particularly in these challenging times. However, these freedoms do not include the right to engage in violence, make threats against communities, or call for the destruction of the State of Israel." The statement additionally underscored: "We offer our support to the Jewish and Israeli students and faculty facing these difficult circumstances. We will do our best to assist those of them who wish to join Israeli universities and find a welcoming academic and personal home." Link to the full statement: en.huji.ac.il/sites/default/…

Hebrew University mourns the passing of Nobel laureate, Prof. Daniel Kahneman, graduate of the Hebrew University, former lecturer in the Department of Psychology, fellow in the University's Center for the Study of Rationality, and holder of an honorary doctorate on its behalf. During his years at the university, Kahneman developed, in the mid-70s of the last century, together with the late Prof. Amos Tversky, the Prospect Theory, an alternative theory to the theory of normative utility, which better describes how people make decisions under conditions of actual uncertainty. They also delved into the realm of decision-making under conditions of uncertainty, uncovering significant biases that lead us astray from probability theory, often resulting in irrational behavior. Their findings fundamentally challenged previous concepts, brought about a real revolution in everything related to decision-making, economic and other, and influenced the policies of many companies and entities all over the world. Kahneman’s groundbreaking research continues to develop to this day, and forms the basis for determining policies for behaviors in situations of uncertainty. A giant in his generation. Of blessed memory!

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been ranked 88th in the world in the Shanghai World University Rankings 2025. The university is placed second among Israeli institutions featured in this year’s ranking. Prof. Asher Cohen, President of the Hebrew University, stated: "The fact that the Hebrew University is once again included in the list of the world's top 100 universities is a clear testament to the academic and research excellence of our faculty members. We are proud of Israeli academia, which once again has three institutions in the top 100. This achievement is particularly impressive in a challenging period, when the entire Israeli academy is facing unprecedented attacks in the international arena, and in which our research receives the official seal of approval for the quality of our work. Despite and in spite of the challenges, we will continue to lead groundbreaking research and be a bridge of knowledge and science between Israel and the world." Prof. Tamir Sheafer, Rector of the Hebrew University and incoming President, added: "We are proud to continue to foster an academic environment that promotes critical thinking, research excellence, and innovative teaching. An endeavor that connects a glorious 100-year heritage with groundbreaking work for the future." The Shanghai Index, published annually, is considered one of the most reliable global rankings in academia. It evaluates the quality of research at institutions worldwide, taking into account factors such as the number of faculty members and alumni who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, as well as the volume and quality of publications in leading journals. This year’s ranking assessed approximately 2,500 universities. The Index is frequently cited by governments, funding agencies, and the international press, making it a key benchmark of global academic standing. With only a small fraction of the world’s universities making it into the top 100, Hebrew University’s inclusion underscores the exceptional quality and impact of its research.

In light of Education Minister @YoavKisch’s decision to exclude the realms of #humanities, #entrepreneurship, and #science from this year's Israel Prize, we at #HUJI, along with the other presidents of Israeli research universities, are organizing a separate event to honour leaders in these fields. The university heads believe that omitting these categories from the Israel Prize ceremony reflects misguided priorities that overlook the sectors that contribute to Israel's advancement, strength, and leadership. This deviation from core values is particularly concerning given the ongoing threats to Israel and its citizens, with scientific and technological advancements playing a crucial role in enhancing security and national resilience in both ordinary and wartime conditions. The heads of the universities point out: "Despite many attempts by various bodies, organizations, and academics to dissuade the Minister of Education from his decision to cancel the distribution of the Israel Prizes in science as well, these efforts have failed. This demonstration that we are holding is not intended to damage the status and dignity of those who will be selected at this year’s ceremony under the theme of heroism, but to signal to the Israeli government that the Israeli public considers the disruption of priorities as an injury to Israel's national strength. We call on everyone who cherishes science and humanities and understands their contribution to Israel's resilience and strength to join us." For the full article 👇🏻 timesofisrael.com/liveblog_e…

The Hebrew University mourns the loss of the esteemed Prof. (Emerita) Alice Shalvi, who passed away this morning at the age of 96. For nearly four decades, Prof. Shalvi was a dedicated and active member of our academic community, contributing her expertise to the Department of English Studies. Prof. Shalvi was not only an accomplished scholar but also a passionate feminist and educator who dedicated her life to advancing various aspects of Israeli society, with a primary focus on women's rights, Jewish and Zionist education, social equality, and coexistence. Her tireless efforts were recognized with the prestigious Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement in 2007. Described as a "revolutionary and trailblazer with courage, intellectual integrity, and long-term vision," Prof. Shalvi went beyond the confines of academia. She often took it upon herself, voluntarily, to seek practical solutions to the societal issues she aimed to address. From her instrumental role in establishing the women's lobby in Israel, which brought the issue of women's status to the forefront of public discourse for the first time, to her voluntary leadership of the "Pelech" school for girls in Jerusalem—a school dedicated to providing religious and quality education alongside democratic principles that encourage creative and independent thinking—Prof. Shalvi consistently strove to improve society and the lives of its members. In all her endeavors, she exemplified how one could maintain a life deeply rooted in Jewish religion and tradition while actively promoting human rights, equality, and peace. Prof. Shalvi's actions, lifestyle, unwavering belief in the inherent goodness of humanity, and zest for life served as an inspiring example to us all. We will sorely miss her spirit and teachings. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her and to the broader community she impacted so profoundly.

A special statement by the Association of University Heads in Israel: We are shocked and profoundly saddened by the cold-blooded murder of the hostages, including students from various institutions, and we extend our deepest condolences to their families. We will forever honor the heavy price paid with their lives by these students, aspiring scholars, and members of Israel's future generation. Our commitment to supporting and strengthening the students serving in the IDF, particularly those who have been physically or mentally wounded during their service, remains unwavering. We urge the Government of Israel to make the release of the hostages the nation's top priority. The rescue of captives is not only a fundamental commandment in Judaism but a core value in all human societies. If we can save even one life, it is as though we have saved an entire world. While we face a cruel and bloodthirsty enemy, the imperative to free the hostages, even at significant short-term costs, must stand alongside the long-term necessity of eradicating Hamas as a terrorist entitity.
