220 years ago, on the dueling grounds at Weehawken, N.J., a years long rivalry turns into the most historic duel in American history.
While Hamilton (Federalist) and Burr (Republican) had political differences, it is said the breaking point was a letter published in the Albany Registry in which Hamilton’s opinion of Burr was shared, sparking Burr to challenge Hamilton to a duel.
On 11 July 1804, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr met on the dueling grounds where Hamilton was mortally wounded and Burr was charged with two counts of murder.
