This is what they mean when they say “People Make Glasgow”.
Our members have pride in their city and in their work, and the courage to stand up for what’s right and fair.
We couldn’t be more proud to represent these frontline heroes.

BREAKING: Glasgow #COP26 refuse and cleansing strike to go ahead.
Glasgow City Council has acted in bad faith and failed to give our members proper time and space to discuss the 11th hour offer from COSLA.
Strike action will commence from midnight.

Full credit to @NicolaSturgeon and the Scot Gov for battling for #BiFab. Future of the contract delivered. Now to build for the long-term. #battleforBiFab
A short message of thanks to the public from GMB Scotland Convenor for Glasgow City Council cleansing department, Chris Mitchell.
And there’s a message for the government in there too...
#ClapForKeyWorkers 👏
When 8,000 women in Glasgow went on strike for equal pay, the city's cleansing workers refused to cross the picket lines.
Frances and her care worker colleagues joined their fellow GMB members on their picket line this morning.
This is what solidarity looks like. ✊
Thank you to GMB Scotland members in the Glasgow cleansing department for the fantastic job they do to keep the city clean - @gmb_40.
Politicians will be quick to praise them again this morning, but what they deserve is a proper pay rise.
Claps and praise won’t pay the bills.
GMB offered proposals to @GlasgowCC to reset industrial relations and to fix Glasgow's waste crisis. These were rejected.
Low paid workers and community activists are now standing together across Glasgow to say "enough is enough".
Stand with us, not against us. ✊ #COP26
Glasgow's striking cleansing workers united with the #FridaysForFuture march through the streets of the city today, with a clear message.
Social justice and climate justice must go hand in hand, with no one left behind. ✊
#cop26#cop26strike
Our union has lost a great fighter today.
A strong, decent and courageous wee woman from Glasgow, never afraid to stand up to the boss or to fight to defend democracy and decency in the union.
RIP Cathy Murphy.
Thousands of our members in British Gas are on strike today, fighting for their future.
They’re taking a stand to fight for negotiated change, and against a “fire and rehire” imposition - across the board cuts to their wages, pensions and leave.
#StopTheBritishGasFire 🔥
While GMB members in British Gas acted as emergency workers during the pandemic, Chris O’Shea and Centrica Senior Management were plotting how to slash workers’ pay & conditions.
@GMBGarySmith sent his solidarity to members ahead of the 5 day strike. #StopTheBritishGasFire🔥
"This city has been built on low pay, on discriminatory pay systems and the exploitation of working people, and GMB members now are standing up and fighting back."
@GMBGarySmith joined our striking members & climate activists on the picket line this morning.
#COP26#COP26Strike
Glasgow City Council has, again, threatened our members with anti-union laws.
But where is Glasgow's political leadership? The silence is deafening.
@SusaninLangside should either step up or step aside.

GMB Scotland and @unitetheunion members employed by @Edinburgh_CC are today taking the 1st of 11 days of strike action.
Our members won't accept working poverty as an inevitability. They're standing together and fighting for the pay rise they deserve.
BREAKING: The fabrication contracts for NnG, like the Seagreen project, will be manufactured by the rest of the world.
2 projects worth £5 billion, requiring 168 turbine jackets to power our future, and not one will be built in Scotland.

The manufacture of the ships Scotland needs will now be exported to the rest of the world.
This is the price communities pay for political failure.

.@DerekMackaySNP said he would back the GMB Scotland members at Ferguson Marine and protect the highly skilled jobs in the shipyard.
Today he has followed through on that promise and the immediate future of the yard is secure.
Huge support for the Glasgow #COP26strike on the picket line at Polmadie this morning.
The strength of the strike reflects the anger these workers feel – they’ve been treated with contempt by @GlasgowCC.
Thanks @Glasgow_LR & @FairHospitality for your solidarity. ✊
A total abdication of responsibility from the political leadership of Glasgow City Council.
They have threatened GMB with anti-union laws three times now, and are now threatening use of contractors to break the strike.
Tory tactics will not work. #COP26Strike#COP26
A very clear message for Chris O’Shea and the rest of the @BritishGas Senior Management, from the busiest picket line we’ve had so far here in Uddingston - no way O’Shea!
#StopTheBritishGasFire🔥
Thank you to @GavNewlandsSNP for raising @BritishGas’ shameful attempts to fire and rehire their workers at #PMQs today.
If British Gas Senior Management thought if they kept their heads down we’d go away, they were wrong! #StopTheBritishGasFire🔥
Strike Day 4: the #StopTheBritishGasFire🔥 Tour of Scotland continues today in Livingston!
@BritishGas, drop the fire and rehire threat and get back round the table!
"This isn't just about fair pay for a day's work, it's fundamentally about decency and dignity".
Thanks to @jackiebmsp for making sure Scotland's care workers have a voice in Parliament.
We are winning the #FightFor15.
Today is the last day of the strike, but the #StopTheBritishGasFire🔥 banner is still on the move and our members are still fighting for their future.
British Gas, drop the fire and rehire threat and get back round the table with @GMB_union.
Tonight we lost a great servant to GMB and our movement, a comrade, friend and fighter, Alex McLuckie.
RIP comrade.
Our thoughts are with Alex’s family, including his family here at GMB who will all miss him terribly.
Climate justice and economic justice must go hand in hand.
Thank you to the world's most prominent environmental campaigner, @GretaThunberg, for standing with us and for extending her solidarity to the working people of Glasgow. #COP26
GMB members at Uddingston taking their 9th day of strike action today to #StopTheBritishGasFire🔥
Centrica Senior Management provoked this dispute, only they can resolve it by taking fire and rehire off the table and negotiating with their workers. #WeDidntStartTheFire🔥
JTU reps welcomed First Minister @NicolaSturgeon to BiFab Methil this morning. Jobs secured for Christmas and now we fight for the future. #BattleforBiFab
Hourly paid workers in @asda are being threatened with the sack if they don’t sign up to a new “Your Choice” contract.
GMB members here at the Glasgow Govan store are demanding a better deal! Asda, respect your workers!
Glasgow has 100 fewer street cleaners than it did 5 years ago.
@JohnMasonMSP’s constituents recognise the city is facing a waste crisis as a result of these cuts.
A properly funded waste & cleansing service isn’t “such a waste of money”, it’s what the people of Glasgow deserve.
NEW: GMB met with @GlasgowCC tonight in good faith, offering a clear set of proposals to reset industrial relations and avoid strikes.
Regrettably, the council rejected these proposals and strike action across the cleansing service will go ahead.

“This is our factory, it’s our future, and we’re going to fight for it”. ✊🏻
Thanks to everyone who helped send a message to @pladis_Global this morning. This is just the start of the fight.
McVitie’s belongs to Glasgow!
It is completely unacceptable for @KateForbesMSP to say that the Fight for £15, our campaign for a £15/hour minimum wage for carers, is 'plucked out of the hat'.
What does that say about how she regards the thousands of care workers who wrote to her to demand it?

BREAKING NEWS: on #IWD2021 Scottish Greens have done a deal that (as far as we know) does not include the increased pay rise for care workers. Proposal was £12/hour minimum wage with a road to £15/hour set out.
83% of carers are women. Their work is undervalued and underpaid.
Today's budget agreement secures pandemic relief payments for approximately 500,000 households; with every household in receipt of council tax relief receiving £130, and households currently eligible for free school meals receiving a further £200 payment.
#WorkingForScotland
Glasgow has a waste crisis, carers walk our streets alone at night to look after our most vulnerable, roads are potholed & historic buildings like Mitchell Library are crumbling.
This is the "real impact" @patrickharvie's Greens have made in local gov't in Glasgow. #ScotBudget
We just launched our campaign for a £2 per hour pay rise for all Scotland’s key workers!
Thanks to everyone who watched the rally but now, #AfterTheApplause, we need you to take action!
Sign the petition and show your support for our frontline workers! gmb.org.uk/campaign/after-ap…
After a hard-fought campaign by Glasgow’s working women, yesterday saw the news that we’ve reached an agreement on equal pay. Shona spoke to @BBCWomansHour & it sounds like they’re planning a serious celebration!
Justice that has been denied and delayed will now be delivered. ✊🏻
We know that it’s GMB members in the health service, care, retail, schools and cleansing that are the “key workers” that keep Scotland moving. 🏴
They are #ScotlandsHeroes - leading Scotland’s response - and in this time of national crisis, everyone should recognise their worth.
The petition to save 470 jobs at the @McVities factory in Tollcross has received more than 72,000 signatures.
Today, our members are taking the petition to the Scottish Parliament, fighting for their factory and for their future. ✊🏻
An incredibly powerful moment from today's rally, as a minute's silence was held and immaculately observed for the many women who have tragically passed away without ever seeing justice. #GlasgowWomensStrike
If Nicola Sturgeon is demanding UK ministers sit down with unions to resolve rail pay, then it’s time for her ministers to sit down with us to resolve council workers’ pay.
If not, our members’ only option will be strike action. morningstaronline.co.uk/arti…
And most important - this would not have been possible without the dignity and determination of the workers and their families. They have moved mountains with their spirit and solidarity. #BattleForBifab
Set your alarm. ⏰
Our striking members in Glasgow's cleansing service will be joined on their Western Depot picket line by climate campaigners and trade unionists from all over the world.
The solidarity and camaraderie is only getting bigger...

Thousands were discharged into care homes without a Covid test while there was no PPE guidance or testing regime and today's report doesn't tell the full story.
Low paid care workers can't be made responsible for the disastrous decisions of government - we need a public inquiry.
It’s time to end two-tier pay for school support staff in Glasgow’s schools. The message to AMEY is loud and clear: “Pay up for key workers.” The message to Glasgow City Council is simple: “Stand with staff, not against them.”
We didn't campaign to save an empty yard. After tomorrow there'll be just 3 workers still employed at Arnish. This is an utter scandal, and a national disgrace. #FMQs
"When they're trying to close down clubs...what happens to these workers? We've got almost 700 workers in Scotland, where do they go?"
GMB rep @MegaraFurie calls on @GlasgowCC to #Askthe700, listen to the workers & reject calls to close sexual entertainment venues in Glasgow.
There is growing support across the Scottish Parliament for a £15 an hour minimum wage in social care. #GMB15
More and more MSP’s are waking up to the fact we have to properly value these key workers.
"Glasgow has more than 100 fewer street cleaners than it did 5 years ago."
Glasgow has a waste crisis, the result of a decade of austerity. We need investment to make the city clean and safe for those who live and work here.
Glasgow deserves better.

There is a cost-of-living crisis in this country, but no one has told the @scotgov or @COSLA.
A 2% pay offer, when inflation is expected to hit double digits, is insulting and out of touch.

Thank you to everyone who supported today's #FightFor15 rally outside the Scottish Parliament!
3 years on from the historic Glasgow Women's Strike, it's time to summon the spirit of that fight and organise for industrial action to get the value you deserve. #StrikeFor15
We've invited Glasgow's Provost Eva Bolander to walk a mile in the shoes of our members, and join them on shift to see what life at the hard end in Glasgow City Council is like.
If she can't bring herself to do that, she should get her coats and go.

.@GMBGlasgowCC stopping traffic with their Unison colleagues in George Square today, demanding full and fair settlement of all equal pay claims.
GMB Scotland’s strike ballot on the issue closes today.
200 workers at Renfrewshire Leisure received an email, just weeks before Christmas, telling them they’d have their contracts terminated within 48 hours.
These workers provide a great service to the community, the least they deserve is some job security.pressreader.com/article/2816…
Great to see @jackiebmsp raising GMB Scotland's #FightFor15 in her response to the #ScotBudget yesterday.
Scotland's social care workers deserve a wage that reflects the value of the work they do.
That's why GMB Scotland members are fighting for £15.

Glasgow’s frontline workers are furious that the council are deploying private contractors to try to break their strike.

Following Cosla's failure to table an improved pay offer for our local government workers, GMB has served Glasgow City Council with statutory notice for industrial action in the cleansing service.
7 days of strike action will begin on November 1st. bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-gla…
When the clapping stopped, those who worked through the Covid crisis should have been given the financial reward they deserve.
But instead our politicians turned their backs, so tonight @GMBGlasgowCC members turned their backs on them.
It’s time to pay up for our key workers!
“It is important to understand that strikes don’t happen by accident. They are a consequence of workers feeling undervalued, disrespected, and ignored for too long”

Our members have rejected the NHS pay offer by 66%.
The result reflects members' views of what is a below inflation offer for the vast majority of staff in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis.
The Cab Sec must now meet with GMB members urgently.

GMB members in Asda have won a day off for all store colleagues on Boxing Day, but in Scotland the Scottish Government has the power to give a day off on New Year's Day to all workers in supermarkets and large shops.
Shop workers are key workers and they all deserve a break.
A welcome development as tonight Scottish Ambulance Service workers received a written apology from Cabinet Secretary for Health @JeaneF1MSP.
These workers are #ScotlandsHeroes, they need the right PPE and we need to work together to beat the coronavirus.
The message is loud and clear: Stop the fire and rehire in British Gas, and let’s return to proper negotiations over the future of this business and its workers.

We are so so proud to see our own Shona Thomson receiving the Eleanor Marx award at #GMB19, honouring her for her role in the #GlasgowWomensStrike.
Congratulations Shona!
Thank you @jackiebmsp for raising Scottish care workers’ demand for £15 an hour at Holyrood.
Undervaluing care workers is putting additional pressure on the NHS and leaves people going without the care they desperately need.
It’s time for a £15 minimum for carers. #FightFor15
If we are to recruit more social care workers because of acute shortages then the @scotgov must prove that they actually value the vital contribution that staff in the sector make. That starts by giving them a £15 per hour wage.
Steven has been a Smart Metering Engineer with @BritishGas since 2014.
