Ontario
Starting today and until U.S. tariffs are removed, Ontario is banning American companies from provincial contracts. Every year, the Ontario government and its agencies spend $30 billion on procurement, alongside our $200 billion plan to build Ontario. U.S.-based businesses will now lose out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenues. They only have President Trump to blame. We’re going one step further. We’ll be ripping up the province’s contract with Starlink. Ontario won’t do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy. Canada didn't start this fight with the U.S., but you better believe we're ready to win it.

Every year, LCBO sells nearly $1 billion worth of American wine, beer, spirits and seltzers. Not anymore. Starting Tuesday, we’re removing American products from LCBO shelves. As the only wholesaler of alcohol in the province, LCBO will also remove American products from its catalogue so other Ontario-based restaurants and retailers can’t order or restock U.S. products. There’s never been a better time to choose an amazing Ontario-made or Canadian-made product. As always, please drink responsibly.

Today, I wrote to the governors, senators and congressmen and women from New York, Michigan and Minnesota putting them on notice that Ontario is prepared to add a 25 per cent surcharge to the electricity we export to their states if President Trump’s tariffs remain in place.   If we have to, we won’t hesitate to increase the charge or shut the electricity off completely.

I’m extremely disappointed that President Trump has chosen to walk away from a trading relationship that for decades has made life better for millions of workers on both sides of the border.   I wish we weren’t here. I wish Ontario and Canada were working together with our American friends and allies to make our two countries the richest, most successful, safest, most secure on the planet. Instead, President Trump has chosen to move forward with tariffs that will only hurt America and make Americans poorer. Canada now has no choice but to hit back and hit back hard.   As Premier of Ontario, the federal government has my full support for a strong and forceful response that matches U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar. Canada has so much of what America needs: high-grade nickel and other critical minerals, energy and electricity, uranium, potash, aluminum. We need to maximize our points of leverage and use them to maximum effect. The federal government needs to also pursue every legal route to challenge these unfair, unjustified and illegal tariffs.   The coming days and weeks will be incredibly difficult. Trump’s tariffs will devastate our economy. They’ll put 450,000 jobs at risk across the province. Every sector and region will feel the impact.   With a strong, stable, four-year mandate that outlives and outlasts the Trump administration, I’ll do whatever it takes to protect Ontario, our workers, businesses and communities. I’ll invest tens of billions to retrain workers for new opportunities, retool companies for new customers, reshore supply chains and rebuild roads and highways to create new jobs. I’ll make tough choices to make Ontario’s economy the most competitive place to invest, create jobs and do business.   None of us want to be here, but Canada and Ontario have faced down this kind of challenge before. Each time, we’ve emerged stronger, more united, more determined than ever. Canada and Ontario will once again answer the call.   Together, we’ll meet this moment. We’ll stand united. We’ll stand strong.   Together, we’ll protect Ontario.

This morning, I met with Mark Carney, Canada’s incoming prime minister for a positive and productive discussion. We agreed on the need to stand firm and strong in the face of President Trump’s threats, including additional retaliatory tariffs in response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum, which will raise costs for American businesses and families. Team Canada has risen to the challenge and proven that no one should ever underestimate the strength and resilience of the Canadian people. Together, we will get through this more united than ever before.   Canada won’t relent until the threat of tariffs is gone for good. We have some good news today. We have temporarily averted tariffs that would have severely damaged our economy, giving time for more negotiation and time for cooler heads to prevail. Thank you to the countless workers, union leaders, businesses and everyday proud Canadians who rallied together to make this happen. With the U.S. pausing tariffs, Ontario will also pause our retaliatory measures. If President Trump proceeds with tariffs, we won’t hesitate to remove American products off LCBO shelves or ban American companies from provincial procurement. Make no mistake, Canada and Ontario continue to stare down the threat of tariffs. Whether it’s tomorrow, in a month or a year from now when we’re renegotiating the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, President Trump will continue to use the threat of tariffs to get what he wants. We’re already feeling the impact. So long as our trading relationship with our largest trading partner is up in the air, we will continue to see many potential projects frozen and projects that were already under way put at risk. Canada and the U.S. need to remain united and focused on the real trade war we’re fighting, with China. If we want to win, we need to fight together - not each other.

Today I joined the volunteers at Pasta it Forward to bring essential food items to seniors in the Vaughan community. We all need to work together to get through this time. If you’re able, please help however you can. ca.gofundme.com/f/pasta-it-f…. Photo courtesy of the Canadian Press.

I accept Kathleen Wynne’s challenge to three televised debates. Let’s do the first one outside the jail where the senior Liberal operative will be spending 4-months.

Now is the time for moral clarity. There can be no question or confusion. Israel has an absolute right to defend itself and its citizens against violence. Today and always, we stand with Israel.

Ontario’s enhanced restrictions were always intended to stop large gatherings where spread can happen. Our regulations will be amended to allow playgrounds but gatherings outside will still be enforced. Play outside safely. Parents keep your distance & wear masks if you can’t.

Team Canada is strong and united. Today, Prime Minister @MarkJCarney and Canada’s premiers agreed on the need to cut red tape and streamline approvals to get big things built faster, including unleashing the enormous economic potential of the Ring of Fire. The prime minister answered Ontario’s long-standing call and agreed to end needless duplication by recognizing provincial environmental assessment processes for nation-building projects. This will let us get shovels in the ground years sooner. Business as usual is over. Let’s get building.

We’re going to make sure that Ontarians are protected. We need masks, and were ramping up to manufacture them right here. We will not wait for them to come outside of our borders. We are taking matters into our own hands to prepare.

Canada shouldn’t settle for anything less than the right deal. Now is not the time to roll over. We need to stand our ground.   The increase in U.S. tariffs to 35 per cent is concerning, especially with tariffs still in place on steel, aluminum, autos, forestry and now copper. While Canada continues to benefit from zero tariffs on all trade that’s USMCA compliant, representing over 90 per cent of our American exports, we need to do everything in our power to protect workers, businesses and communities from the impact of tariffs. The federal government needs to hit back with a 50 per cent tariff on U.S. steel and aluminum.   Canada has what the United States needs: oil and gas, critical minerals, steel and aluminum, electricity, potash and uranium. We’re America’s number one customer and keep millions of Americans working. The federal government needs to maximize our leverage and stand strong in the face of President Trump’s tariffs.   Our government will do whatever is needed to support workers and businesses. We’re building a more competitive, self-reliant and resilient economy by speeding up approvals, building new infrastructure to diversify our trading partners and onshoring every widget we can to fortify home-grown supply chains.   Canadian workers and businesses are desperate for certainty. Let’s work together, united, to deliver it.

Hate and Islamophobia have NO place in Ontario. Justice must be served for the horrific act of hatred that took place in London, Ontario yesterday. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends during this difficult time. These heinous acts of violence must stop.

The employees at @Wholefoods can now wear poppies at work and rightfully so! It should never have taken the threat of Legislation to do the right thing. We will still make sure it never happens again in Ontario. #LestWeForget

I have asked that the flags at all Ontario government buildings and establishments across the province be flown at half-mast in memory of the 215 Indigenous children whose lives were tragically lost at the former Kamloops residential school.
