We're proud to have contributed to the Senate passage of this critical piece of legislation. Deepfake sexual abuse is a real problem that requires decisive action.
The Senate passed the DEFIANCE Act this week, a first-of-its-kind bill to give civil recourse for victims of nonconsensual, sexually-explicit deepfakes. Our work is far from over. The House needs to follow our lead and quicky take up and pass our bill.

At this point in the U.S. election season, X users have already been exposed to a deluge of political deepfakes — nearly all unlabeled. Deepfakes are a threat to election integrity. From the U.S. to India, we’re seeing that threat in real time.

82% of voters don't trust tech companies to regulate AI alone. 56% support a federal agency, while only 14% don't. Americans on all sides of the political spectrum agree: it’s time for the federal government to promote innovation alongside accountability and transparency in AI.
Exclusive poll: American voters prefer federal AI regulation over self-regulation by tech companies, with the majority saying they don't trust tech executives to regulate AI. trib.al/gTtCzbO

A 2020 Detroit police report indicates that 9 out of 10 times, facial recognition was used to investigate misdemeanors. And worse, out of 70 total cases in which it was used in the first half of 2020, 68 involved Black suspects. The race of the remaining two? Unknown. (2/3)

🧵 You may have heard that Annapolis police used facial recognition to apprehend & arrest a mass shooter in 2018. But these individual, high-profile cases aren’t representative of how the technology is used on a larger scale: as an invasive, racist tool of surveillance. (1/3)

"The devastating impact of deepfake sexual abuse that academics and technologists have long warned of is no longer a problem for the future. Today, a potential abuser just needs access to a web browser and internet connection to freely create hundreds or thousands of non-consensual intimate images," said Adam Billen, Director of Policy at Encode Justice. "The DEFIANCE Act will fix a clear gap in existing law and return power to the victims of deepfake sexual abuse," added Sunny Gandhi, VP of Political Affairs at Encode Justice. judiciary.senate.gov/press/d…

Having someone like @alondra at the forefront of tech policy within the Biden administration will be refreshing—she’s dedicated her career to the study of science, technology, and inequity.
Dr. Alondra Nelson made some really important points today about how we bias the outputs of ML methods because ultimately humans generate the labels we start with. Bias in, Bias out.

Don’t let the Capitol attack dissuade you—facial recognition is, by and large, still dangerous, and the same tools used to identify white supremacists today will be used to wrongfully arrest Black men and surveil BLM protestors tomorrow.
A ban on all government use of face recognition, including its use by law enforcement, remains a necessary precaution to protect us from this dangerous and easily misused technology. eff.org/deeplinks/2021/01/fa…
