A large dunkelflaute hits Europe! As dark settled in at 5pm yesterday, both wind and solar generation flatlined across the region. Energy prices in Denmark and Germany surged to €936/MWh as utilities scrambled to meet peak demand with limited renewable output. A stark reminder of the need for load shifting, diverse energy sources and robust storage solutions for the winter months. Data here: app.electricitymaps.com/zone… A dunkelflaute is a weather event when there is simultaneously very little wind and solar power generation, typically occurring during dark winter periods. The term comes from the German words for "dark" (dunkel) and "lull" (flaute). #EnergyMarkets #Renewables #Dunkelflaute #Germany

🚨 Grid alert - Major power outage in Spain and Portugal (Spanish version below) The Iberian network was automatically disconnected from the European grid at 12:38 PM CET, leaving millions without power. This major power blackout hit Spain and Portugal, also affecting Andorra and some parts of France close to the border. The Spanish TSO, Red Eléctrica (REE), expects to restore the supply in the next 6 to 10 hours. The causes of this major outage are still to be determined. We are closely reporting the data shared by ENTSO-E and monitoring all updates coming from the Spanish TSO (REE), the French TSO Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE) and other governmental sources to keep all users informed. Spanish authorities have temporarily stopped all nuclear power supply due to safety reasons, as can be seen in the data visualization below. You can observe these and other related events in our app and see the effects on neighboring grids. Please note that there may be slight delays in the data. Note: ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity) is the central point for the collection and publication of data related to the generation, transportation, and consumption of electricity across Europe.

Hey @HannoKlausmeier, we already responded to your comments when you posted the same text last year, but here it is again: nitter.app/pierre_segonne/status/… We are happy to discuss the specific arguments you raise and how we could improve if you are also open to listening :) All said, we will definitely work on improving our documentation to make it easier to understand: 1) Why producing and operating a gas power plant can be more efficient in Germany than it is in Hungary (according to data published by the actual power plants) 2) Why we decided to improve the accuracy in individual regions (see also our public discussions on this topic since 2017: github.com/electricitymaps/e…) 3) Why we believe an official UN report is a credible source (compared to for example the one you mention that 7x the LCA factor based on "Opportunity cost emissions [due to] the longer time lag between planning and operation of one energy technology relative to another")

New feature worth highlighting here: Improved labeling of data issues on the app (for data outages, estimated data and more) 🏷️ "Estimated" or "aggregated" may not be distinct enough for many users, so we have been thinking hard about how to improve our messaging in the app and better explain what the different data types actually mean. We hope this can help alleviate some confusion! We've also made it more obvious when data is suboptimal to prevent it being shared as fact. A big thanks to all of you and the passionate community around Electricity Maps. We appreciate what a trusted source of data we are for our users and hold that in very high regard. 🌬️ Europe’s interconnected grid: Grid resilience when wind production drops. West Denmark, with significant wind power capacity, relies on its interconnected grid system during periods of low wind production. Our data analysis shows how the regional power system responds to these fluctuations. Key observations: - During low wind periods, West Denmark imports electricity through its interconnectors with net exchange topping 2GW - Power flows from Sweden, Norway, Great Britain, and the Netherlands to supplement local production - The data shows carbon intensity rising from 45g CO₂eq/kWh to 255g CO₂eq/kWh, while electricity prices increased from 31.47 €/MWh to 144.91 €/MWh over the 24 hour period. This case illustrates the relationship between grid interconnection and renewable energy integration, highlighting both opportunities and challenges in power system operation. How does your country manage variable renewable energy production? #RenewableEnergy #EnergyTransition #WindPower

We always strive for accuracy in our real-time data on carbon intensity. However, data outages can occur, necessitating estimates. Our Time Slicer Average (TSA) model fills short-term data gaps using historical averages, but it has limitations, especially during unexpected weather changes impacting power production. Recently, missing data from our German provider and unexpected wind speed changes led to inaccuracies in our real-time carbon intensity estimations. Going forward we will provide: 1. Better communication about estimated data in our app. 2. Increased transparency about our estimation models, their use, and limitations. 3. A slight delay in data display to accommodate provider reporting lags. 4. Swift removal of data during extended provider outages. Update: A day after the major blackout that hit Spain and Portugal, the Spanish TSO REE has confirmed that demand has been completely restored. While the root cause of the outage is still unknown, we can already analyze how the grid restoration unfolded — and what it tells us about system resilience. 🔄 How do you restart a power system after a total blackout? This is known as a black start, and it must be carried out in carefully managed stages to keep grid frequency within safe limits. In the case of Spain, the following resources were used to get the grid back to capacity: - Hydro and gas resources were among the first to restart the supply. - The interconnection between Spain and France has also been crucial: More than 4 GWh were imported from France between 14:00 and 18:00 CEST. Imports from Morocco also contributed to the restoration of power supply in the evening, between 19:00 and 20:00 CEST. 🛑 Why not nuclear? Nuclear plants were automatically disconnected for safety reasons and are typically among the last to rejoin the grid during restoration. ☀️ And wind and solar? During the blackout, some wind and solar generation remained online and continued to support the grid in isolated areas, helping to prevent a complete system collapse. However, these sources currently do not support black start operations. Most solar PV systems lack grid-forming capabilities, meaning they cannot independently contribute to restoring the system after a total shutdown. You can continue to track the evolution of events in real time through our app and portal.

Over the last few days, German data has been intermittently unavailable on the Electricity Maps app. This is due to maintenance and upgrades for the reporting systems of Germany’s System Operators. The ENTSO-E Transparency Platform, the raw data source we use in our calculations for Europe, has provided some communication but without specifics on exact outage times. There is data available at the moment, however we expect more outages for German data before the end of the month. Lengthy data interruptions cause our estimation models to be less accurate. We have a trigger that stops data publication when those estimations start to degrade in quality due to lack of freshness in the data source. We do this to prevent inaccurate data from being published, inline with what we have promised to do in our earlier communications. We will monitor the situation closely and provide an update if there are unexpected changes. We appreciate our community’s passion and reliance on our product as a source of carbon intensity. You can find updates on the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform here: transparency.entsoe.eu/news/…

I think you might have misunderstood or misread something, the nuclear emission factor is also based on life-cycle assessment - you can read the report here unece.org/sites/default/file…

1) If producing the "ingredient" in one country is emitting more CO2 than in another, why should we not attempt to show the most accurate data? As an example (that we have yet to fix due to missing data), tropical hydro power might have a much higher emission factors than the global average: github.com/electricitymaps/e… "I am aware that for instance gas plants have different efficiency rates some are CHP other are not but you are not going that deep in your application. It would also be extremally difficult." We are actually going that deep, see this part of the calculations here: colab.research.google.com/dr… 2) There is active discussions on the nuclear emission factor here, where each alternative scientific paper with emission factors are discussed in great (and constructive) details: github.com/electricitymaps/e… 3) "site of the University of Freiburg" You missed a link, would you mind sharing it? :) 4) "I really respect your openness to discuss (I really mean that) but right now it is a matter of fact that very strange people are "abusing" your data to promote their doubtful political agenda." Thanks, we appreciate that. And yes, unfortunately the data is used for promoting political agendas - but on all ends of the spectrum. We are actively working on improving the communication in the app and making it more clear what the data sources are for everything, so hopefully it becomes easier to refute abuse.

We focus on CO2 emissions without taking a stance on which power production mode is best. The decision to produce power using a given technology must include considerations in addition to carbon intensity, such as cost and other environmental externalities (extraction of rare metals, nuclear waste, fine particles, biodiversity, etc…)

Friday fun: a little hack by our chief-student-developer Felix: a smart lightbulb that shows how "green" the electricity grid currently is, of course using electricityMap data. It is windy today!
Lightbulb in our new office shows the carbon intensity of the grid in realtime. High share of renewables at the moment! powered by @electricityMap #ClimateChange

☀️ App update! Introducing location-specific timezones for all zones, when you select a zone, timestamps across the app will match that zone's local time. As shown here in @California_ISO , we hope this helps highlight how solar production impacts the grid mix and carbon intensity throughout the day. Visit the app here: app.electricitymaps.com/zone… #RenewableEnergy #EnergyTransition
