Cindy was fortunate to capture this bald eagle taking off from a small iceberg in Glacier Bay, Alaska. What a moment!! I captured otters! Looks like the momma otter was carrying her pup! According to GB park rangers, the otter has the densest fur of any animal on Earth with up to 1,000,000 hairs per square inch of skin!

The initial forecast for Hurricane Helene was made 3.5 days before landfall. Remarkably, the forecast and actual landfall points were roughly 25 miles apart. Considering the average error for a 3.5-day forecast is 145 miles, that's incredibly good work by NHC. With that said, 25 miles can mean a world of difference regarding the severity of impacts. #scwx #ncwx

Once the sun sets in Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow) , Alaska at 5:49pm tomorrow (November 18th), it won't rise again until January 23rd. That's 65 days with NO SUN! Utqiagvik, AK is the northernmost city in the United States and is located roughly 350 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Once "Polar Night" begins, each day until January 23rd will be mostly pitch black. Barrow will still have a few hours of what's known as "twilight", which occurs when the sun is just below the horizon. During twilight, the sky will look like it does here before sunrise and after sunset. Why does this occur? Because the earth is tilted 23.5 degrees on its axis, the Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the sun in autumn and winter. Areas north of the Arctic Circle endure more than two months with the sun never rising above the horizon. ANYWHERE ELSE, USA is fine by me! #scwx #ncwx #akwx

IS THE 2024 HURRICANE SEASON A BUST? It's time to address the elephant in the room. There's no denying the forecasts from multiple agencies for an extremely active hurricane season are in serious jeopardy. We're near the peak of hurricane season, and we haven't had a named storm in the Atlantic since Ernesto formed on August 12th. The last time we didn't have a named storm form between August 13th - September 3rd was 1968...56 years ago! So what gives? Why has it been so quiet and what's in store for the rest of the season? Let's take a deep dive into the science. The atmosphere is very complex, and there are multiple factors that meteorologists analyze to determine how active it will be in any given hurricane season. 1. ATLANTIC OCEAN TEMPS - The water has been extremely warm over the main development region of the Atlantic, meaning there is plenty of fuel for tropical systems to gain strength. There are no signs of that changing over the next few months. 2. WIND SHEAR- Heading into the heart of a La Nina pattern, wind shear typically runs lower than normal. For the past 3 weeks, it's actually been running higher than normal. Wind shear can prevent tropical systems from forming. Those that do develop have a tough road. Wind shear disrupts the circulation of tropical systems, reducing their efficiency and causing them to weaken or even dissipate. 3. TROPICAL WAVE TRACK - It's normal for tropical waves to roll off the African coast south of the Cabo Verde Islands where they take advantage of warm water and plenty of atmospheric moisture. For the past 2-3 weeks, the configuration of very warm water over much of the Atlantic combined with relatively cooler water near the equator has pushed the tropical wave train north. Tropical waves have been emerging from Africa over much cooler water and into a dust-laden atmosphere that all work against development. With a farther north track, these disturbances actually pull more dry air into the heart of Hurricane Alley, squelching thunderstorm activity. Additionally, this more northern track produces much higher than normal rainfall to the parched Saharan Desert! 4. ATMOSPHERIC STABILITY - Typically in the atmosphere it gets colder as you ascend. Because colder air is denser and heavier than relatively warmer air near the ground, it naturally wants to rise. This year, the air aloft has been warmer than normal leading to more stability that suppresses thunderstorm activity. We're not 100% sure why this is happening. It could be a result of climate change or even related to the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'Apai Volcano eruption in 2022. It injected 150 million metric tons of water vapor into the stratosphere. More water vapor aloft absorbs more heat. 5. MADDEN-JULIAN OSCILLATION (MJO) - The MJO is an atmospheric wave in the tropics that travels around the globe over a period of 30-60 days. Embedded in this global wave are phases of enhanced and suppressed precipitation. In the enhanced phase, the air is more likely to rise and produce thunderstorms while in the suppressed phase, thunderstorms have difficulty forming due to sinking air. Much of the Atlantic is currently in a suppressed phase. Now the question is, will this lull continue, or will the second half of the hurricane season be much more active? Given the current state of the atmosphere and how slow things are to change, I don't see much development over the next week or so. Toward the middle of the month and beyond, the waters remain warm, the wind shear is expected to lower, tropical waves will likely move off Africa farther south, and the air aloft is forecast to cool, leading to more instability. This suggests the Atlantic Ocean should spring to life. Whether that happens remains to be seen. Bottom-line, we have a long way to go this hurricane season. Even if the preseason numbers don't verify, it only takes one hurricane hitting us to make it an awful season. Remember, most of our big hurricane hits have come after September 10th. Florence: 9-14-2018 Five: 9-17-1906 Hugo: 9-22-1989 Ian: 9-30-2022 Matthew: 10-8-2016 Charleston: 10-13-1893 Hazel: 10-15-1954 Halloween: 10-31-1899 Stay vigilant! #scwx #ncwx

30 YEARS AT ABC-15! 30 years ago today, I moved to Myrtle Beach and became the chief meteorologist at ABC-15. I didn't give 30 years much thought until I chatted with Dad. He said, "Son, do you realize you've been at your station now for as long as I was in the Marine Corps?" That shocked me because my entire childhood through college was always associated with the military. Dad's career was long and illustrious and seemed like a lifetime. It's hard for me to fathom I've been doing this gig for that long. It's been an amazing journey! There are many meteorologists better than me, but very few work as hard as I do. When the weather is potentially dangerous, I don't mind working 24/7 to see our community through a storm. The goal is to always give you the best weather information possible. I've always taken pride in being the voice of reason...a no-nonsense meteorologist providing honest and useful information so you can make decisions that protect you and your family. In the community, I average roughly 200 appearances a year at schools, civic groups, churches, festivals and other events. I believe one of God's spiritual gifts to me is a servant's heart. When I put others first, it brings me great joy and hopefully, makes someone else's life a little better. I simply try to live this from Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” The most important person in my broadcast career has been my boss and friend, Victoria Spechko. She started at ABC-15 as a reporter and now leads our entire new team as news director. For 30 years she has been a rock in my life through many good times and even some bad times. I know I can always count on her to have my back and the backs of her staff. Thanks, Vic! You'll never know how truly grateful I am for your guidance and friendship. ABC-15 has always been a special and wonderful place to work and it's because of the family atmosphere. I adore my coworkers, past and present. They have enriched my life immensely and I'll forever be grateful for each of them. Finally, the most important "Thank you" is for you, my viewers and my social media followers. We're taught our entire lives not to worry about what other people think, but in this business, what YOU think ultimately determines my success. I consider it an honor and privilege to serve you and I hope I have done that well. THANK YOU for the amazing life and career you have given me and my family. I can only pray I have managed to return a small part of the blessings you have bestowed upon me! This is home and where I want to be for the duration of my career. As you can see from the posted photos, my clothes and hairstyle have changed dramatically and I have certainly aged, but my passion for the weather, this community and the people haven't waned a bit. To all of you, my heartfelt thanks for your support for three decades!

This is wild and something you don’t see very often in the Carolinas. This is a DC-10 Air Tanker dropping 9,400 gallons of fire retardant on the raging wildfire near Saluda, NC. Amazing video via Robert Dellinger.

Think you've seen it all? Think again! Samuel Woods took this photo today of a gator sunning itself on a plastic float on Lake Waccamaw in North Carolina. I can barely get on one of these! How did he do it? More 2020 weirdness! 😂 #scwx #ncwx
