It is with a very heavy heart that my colleagues and I are having to take to the picket lines yet again to fight for pay parity and demand that nursing staff are valued, respected and protected. Members of the RCN across all health and social care trusts in Northern Ireland will take strike action today for the third time in four years, to demand a return to pay parity with nursing staff in England.
While nursing staff across the rest of the UK have been awarded a pay rise for 2023-2024, nursing staff in Northern Ireland on Agenda for Change contracts have been left with nothing during one of the worst cost-of-living crises in years. They are, once again, the worst paid in the UK. The treatment of public sector workers is disgraceful and nursing staff will no longer stay silent as we have seen the impact on staff and patients. This is as much about patient care as it is about pay. If we donโt value and pay our nurses what they are worth, the recruitment and retention crisis we are facing will continue to deepen. Unless this situation is resolved, I fear for the health service, I fear for the staff, but most of all, I fear for the patients who deserve a much better service. #RCNStrike #FairPayForNursing #EnoughIsEnough

This will be the third time that RCN nursing staff in Northern Ireland have taken strike action over the past four years. The last period of strike action was in December 2022 although colleagues in England and Wales took further action last year.
โผ๏ธIt is immoral and indefensible that, despite the money being available, nursing staff are being held hostage over a political situation they have no power to influence.
โผ๏ธWe have seen pressures in the health service deepen over the past year with no government and no prospect of much needed transformation.
โผ๏ธNursing staff in Northern Ireland were promised by our politicians in 2020 that we would never be out of pay parity again and we cannot believe that we are here once again.
โผ๏ธNo nurse wants to go on strike but it is because of the extreme pressures on the NHS and the workforce crisis โ which have been repeatedly ignored - that nurses have been left with no option.
โผ๏ธThe evidence is unequivocal - safe staffing saves lives and having the right number of registered nurses on duty has a direct impact on the safety and quality of patient care. Todayโs highly unsafe situation is what is driving our members to say โenough is enoughโ.
Unity is strength. Our strength will be in our numbers. See you all on the picket line on Thursday.
