Paragon: Catherine Lapointe, The Mad General
The Paragon for the Marcolian Starter Deck is Catherine Lapointe or simply Catherine. She has both a passive and ‘active’ ability. For her passive ability, it gives a permanent +1/+1 buff to the second unit played on the same turn. Her ‘active’ ability is different because yes she is a playable 4-cost 5/5 unit but you cannot choose who Catherine attacks. Instead, Catherine will randomly attack 1 unit or attack the face when you end your turn, regardless of Defenders on the board.
Card Highlights
The high-valued Marcolian cards are Marcolian Bannerman, Combat Veteran, Iron Corps Rifleman, Fire Support Base, and Unstable Drone.
Game Mechanics
2 game mechanics that are important to understand with the Marcolian Starter Deck:
➡️ Armed: These units deal their damage first before non-armed units. Picture it like this, if an Armed unit destroys a non-armed unit it wouldn’t take any damage after attacking. But if both units have an Armed tag, it gets negated.
➡️ Assault: Units or effects with Assault on its description require you to deal damage to your opponent's face/HP first before it triggers.
Early Game
Now let's dive into the early game phase of the Marcolian Starter Deck. First up we have the Mulligan Phase. For this, we want to get 1 and 2-cost units as well as low-cost effects like PS-8 Launcher or Determined Assault. Pairing Marcolian Bannerman with these low-cost effects is the best starting sequence you can do with this Starter Deck because Bannerman gets a permanent +1/+1 buff with each effect played.
When choosing what to bank, you should prioritize banking high-cost cards that you won’t be playing in the next 2 to 3 turns. Building your board with Catherine’s passive ability in mind is very important to gain the early game advantage. Sequencing of playing cards is something you need to be mindful of. Usually looking to buff higher-valued units should be a good rule of thumb.
Similar to Bannerman, Combat Veteran is also another low-cost unit that puts a lot of pressure on your opponent in the early game. This is because Combat Veteran grows by +1/+1 whenever it deals damage and survives.
The other low-cost unit that I want to touch on is Iron Corps Rifleman. This 2-cost 2/2 unit is good for early board control because it has an armed tag. This means that it can kill your opponent's low-cost units without taking any damage, assuming they don’t have an armed tag as well.
Taking advantage of all these unit effects will help you gain the early board control advantage.
Mid-Late Game
Going to the mid and late game, the timing of you playing your Paragon Catherine is very important. One of the reasons why we want early board control with Catherine is for her to have a higher chance of hitting your opponent’s HP upon playing her on the board. Getting that 5 damage to the face on turn 4 puts a lot of pressure on your opponent.
Late-game units that help you when you already have a wide board are Fire Support Base and Crew Boss. Fire Support Base being a Defender helps protect other units, but the more important effect for both these units is the +1/+1 buff they give to all other units on the board. This buff of course is not permanent and will be removed whenever the Fire Support Base or Crew Boss is destroyed/banished from the board.
Another late-game unit that is good would be the Unstable Drone. The Unstable Drone is a good unit to play when you’re trying to take back control of the board since it has an Aftermath effect that damages any unit of your choice whenever it is destroyed.
Conclusion
Marcolian Starter Deck is an aggro deck that is very comparable to the Kathari Starter Deck which aims to take early board control and finish games fast. The Marcolian Starter Deck depends greatly on your judgment. You need to judge whether you can finish games off in the next turn or if you should apply pressure to your opponent by directly hitting their face over doing board trades.
