From delay to delivery. 🏗️🔥
A year ago, I vowed that a new contractor would be appointed for the Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance in Hankey, Eastern Cape, and that the project would be put back on the path to completion after more than 10 years of delays.
🤝 This morning, I made good on that promise by handing over the site to the newly appointed contractor.
Once completed, the Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance will honor her memory with the dignity and respect she deserves, while creating jobs and opportunities for the local community.

I have decided to take the public into confidence and advise South Africa that at least R300 million has been stolen from the department in the last 10 years in an elaborate scheme by cyber-hackers, and potentially officials within the department. Had an inspiring call with a young man from Mamelodi who runs an NPO that’s raised funds to build a library and youth centre in his community but hasn’t been able to get an answer on government owned land that could be used for the project. I’ve committed to meet the community and see if we can expedite this matter. Work on the redevelopment of 85 Anderson Street - the future home of the new Johannesburg Deeds Office - is now over 60% complete.
This R707 million project is employing over 210 local workers, supporting 22 SMMEs, and training more than 100 young people through the EPWP.
Once completed, it will modernise deeds administration and breathe new life into the Johannesburg CBD.
