We inherited a broken prison system. The country was days away from running out of places, which would mean the collapse of law and order across the country. We are building - 14,000 new prison places, the largest programme since the Victorian era. There will be more criminals behind bars than ever before by the end of the Parliament. But without further sentencing changes, we’d still end up facing the same crisis again next year. We will never do that to the British people. @MoJGovUK

Kemi Badenoch’s attack on Bridget Phillipson at PMQs today lays bare something deeper about the direction of their politics. I’m proud that this Labour government has the most state-schooled Cabinet in the post-war era - people who didn’t grow up with privilege, but earned their place through hard work. That’s the difference between us and them. This Labour government believes background should never be a barrier to opportunity. Social mobility isn’t a slogan - it’s the whole point of a fair society. And yet too often it feels like there are those who want to sneer at it, undermine it, and drag us backwards. We should be celebrating opportunity, not trying to hold it back.

Good to meet my friend @antonioguterres at Kew Gardens for London Climate Action Week. What gives me confidence is seeing so many people focused on practical solutions. The UK's role is clear: back clean energy, protect nature and grow our economy as we make the transition.

I’ve known Keir since he was a lawyer. He was principled then, just as he is now, and throughout his career he has been driven by a deep sense of public service and duty to this country. He transformed the Labour Party, rooted out antisemitism, restored trust and made our party electable again. He won a historic mandate to change Britain for the better and, most importantly, he delivered on that promise. With Keir’s leadership, this Labour government brought stability back to our economy, cut NHS waiting lists, improved renters’ rights, began to fix the crisis we inherited in our courts and prisons, reduced small boat crossings, protected young people online, lifted half a million children out of poverty and restored Britain’s standing in the world. He put Britain back at the heart of Europe, stood firmly with Ukraine and rebuilt relationships with our allies. Change promised, change fought for and change delivered. That is Keir Starmer’s legacy, and I am incredibly proud to have played my part in it.

Thinking of my dad today, whose influence still stays with me long after his passing. Being a father has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. My sons and daughter remind me every day of the importance of love, opportunity and belonging. Fathers and strong role models help young people build the confidence, resilience and values they need to thrive. That's why I'm leading work across government to back dads, strengthen families and improve outcomes for men and boys.

These sentences for those rioting in Southampton last week send a clear message that violence on our streets will never be tolerated and you should expect to feel the full force of the law. I pay tribute to the officers who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public.

At #LondonTechWeek, I announced we’ll develop and test AI legal assistants for the Crown Court, faster case listing tools for judges, and AI transcription for every probation officer in England and Wales - less admin, more time keeping the public safe.
