Conservative Member of Parliament for Goole and Pocklington

Yesterday's King's Speech had several good ideas. However, it failed to address many of the serious issues facing the UK, including welfare spending, education, healthcare and the armed forces. My speech on the King's Speech here👇 piped.video/R1V2AvV_0uE?si=T0cj…

This is a real issue, that started with Gordon Brown using PFI to hide public spending, which meant that we spent £275 billion to get £50 billion of assets: and has been worsened by governments of all colours, including the current one, being pathetic in their oversight both of privatised monopolies and public contracts. If you meet any MP or Minister at an Armed Forces Day event please ask them what are they doing to stop our Northern Ireland veterans being persecuted under the Troubles legislation. Have they talked to Burnham about it? Have they talked to Benn? Will they vote against it?

The double standards on show in this case are staggering. If a British citizen is accused of an offence affecting America, the US demands immediate extradition - regardless of whether that offence took place on US soil. Yet when a US pilot commits a violent crime in the UK, we meekly cede jurisdiction to a foreign military court. Our legal relationship with America remains hopelessly lopsided. theguardian.com/uk-news/ng-i…

The Ockenden Report should ring alarm bells for us all. The same failings seen at Nottingham - infections, suboptimal conditions, insufficient consultant cover, overstretched staff - echo those found at the Countess of Chester Hospital. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/06…

In the Letby case, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health identified the same problems. Yet the jury never saw that report. Instead, an individual was put forward as the explanation for institutional failure. How many more warnings do we need? Until we confront systemic failings, we will continue to put patients at risk - and we will continue to risk another hospital finding another scapegoat, and another miscarriage of justice.

We need a strict limit on how much agricultural land can be converted in any one area. Right now, developers are inundating places like the East Riding - spoiling our countryside and riding roughshod over the explicit wishes of local residents.

We need balance. We must protect our food security and rural heritage by directing solar to brownfield sites and rooftops, rather than sacrificing prime farmland to line the pockets of corporate energy developers. I outlined the impact on residents when the issue of solar farms was debated in @UKParliament last May 👇

Following a letter signed by 121 MPs, including myself, Lloyds Bank has said that it will accept cheque deposits at Post Offices until 2030. This is a welcome step in the right direction. Lloyds was the only major British bank that did not allow its customers to deposit cheques at Post Office branches and Banking Hubs, causing problems for customers who still rely on cheques, especially older residents, disabled people, small businesses, charities, and community groups. The 2030 deadline is subject to Lloyds and the Post Office reaching an agreement on contract terms, and both sides should now focus on securing that agreement so customers can continue to deposit cheques locally. nitter.app/DavidDavisMP/status/20…
Banking Hubs and Post Offices are lifelines for communities losing traditional bank branches. Yet Lloyds Bank is the only major British bank that doesn't allow customers to deposit cheques at Banking Hubs and Post Offices. This hits local businesses, the elderly, and rural areas hardest. That’s why I’ve joined over 120 colleagues in writing to Lloyds Bank to demand they reverse this policy 👇

Starmer's proposals to prioritise so-called 'trusted' news outlets, like the BBC, are policies that China would be proud of. The pandemic exposed the danger of this approach, as the state weaponised the label of 'misinformation' to suppress legitimate debate on vaccine efficacy and the lab-leak hypothesis. The Government must tread carefully here and shouldn't play arbiter of truth. Otherwise, the only result will be a devastating chilling effect on free speech. The Government should remember that free speech is only free if you extend it to your opponents as well as your supporters. reuters.com/legal/litigation…

A Farming Roadmap is welcome, but farmers need action now and not more promises kicked into the long grass. Funding, profitability, and rapid delivery must match the rhetoric. That means cutting costs, protecting food security, and repealing the Family Farm Tax. gov.uk/government/news/new-p…

The findings of Donna Ockenden’s Nottingham maternity review are appalling. But this is only the latest in a long line of these sorts of reviews. Review after review is not enough. Change is needed so other families are spared this pain in future. There must now be full accountability, not just another set of recommendations left to gather dust. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwyd…

One of the world's leading forensic scientists, Dame Sue Black, has raised serious concerns about the safety of Lucy Letby's conviction - and whether she received a fair trial. See here 👇 telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/06…

Dame Sue Black's point is simple. "If you're innocent until proven guilty, then you have a right to defence, and that means you should have access to the same levels of expertise." Whatever your view of Letby's guilt or innocence, that's a question worth asking.

Dame Sue Black is absolutely right. Her comments reinforce the views of dozens of world-class experts who have questioned the so called 'expert' evidence in the Letby case. I hope that the CCRC gives a prompt ruling on this matter, and refers it back to the Court of Appeal, as Miss Letby has now spent more than 2,000 days in prison for what many now believe is a serious miscarriage of justice.

I recently joined Amanda Knox to discuss the political implications of the Lucy Letby case. If the case ultimately proves to be a miscarriage of justice, the consequences for public policy will be profound - from police investigations and prosecutorial practice to the use of expert evidence, the appeals system, and the culture of accountability within the NHS. The Post Office IT scandal is one of the most devastating miscarriages of justice in British history. It is right that Fujitsu - the company that designed the system that decimated the postmasters' lives - contributes to the compensation bill for victims. Victims must quickly get the compensation and redress they deserve. They have already waited far too long. theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…

Al Carns is absolutely right here 👇 Our veterans in Northern Ireland did nothing but their duty in defeating the IRA terrorists. We cannot now let the IRA achieve their aims through political concessions by persecuting our own soldiers. This element of the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill must be stopped.
