Completely stunned. Most aggressive rider award for @LeTour and get to stand on the podium in Paris. Did not expect that at all. Wow. Thankyou #speechless
My 3 girls. Cannot explain how I feel right now. I would like to introduce you to Daisy and Ella Martin, born at 9:31 and 9:32 this morning. All are doing very well.
First time I’m not at @LeTour since 2014 so had an idea. How about I tweet throughout the race as though I am riding GC. Looking ahead to the days stage and how I would approach it. Sound interesting?
The most beautiful podium in cycling. Always a special day in the season made even better by the privilege of most combative rider of the Tour de France. Thankyou
I consider myself to be 1 of the luckiest people in the world to do what I love as a job, to have my health and to be married to @JessMartin_7 and soon to father twin girls. A flat tyre at the wrong moment is really shit, but I won’t dwell on it. I’ll keep fighting #perspective
All the new rules @UCI_cycling is creating with the excuse of making racing safer and they forget the basics. Parked cars all over the place in the final of a ‘sprint’ stage. They will claim they don’t have responsibility. One of scariest finishes I’ve done for a while.
20th July 1999 a 12year old me watched @LeTour standing roadside on Val Louron-Azet. Very special to race over those same roads once more and even more so to race for the win. Fair play @NairoQuinCo Simply stronger today. Proud of how I raced. Love the Pyrenees
Huge 3 weeks for myself and this team competing in its first vuelta remember. Just 1 day too far for me today after so much racing the last months. Hoping for a quiet ride around Madrid and time to head home. Thankyou all for the support. I gave it everything I had.
Whatever happens these next 2 days, 1 thing I will always have over @GeraintThomas86 is winning his home race. Thanks @juniortourwales for the photo. Great memories.
Thankyou for all the messages. A very special day. Emotions got the better of me. So much time away from my 3 girls the last few months and things haven’t gone great but finally it all came together. Back at it again today.
Taking today as a personal victory. The result wasn’t what our ambition wanted but 4 weeks ago I could barely walk after fracturing my sacrum. Today I finally felt like I could push again. Hope to get the right break again soon.
Summary of today. A group of very tired men trying to race their bikes fast uphill and drop each other. In hindsight it was a lot of fun. Pure brutality.
Truly humbled by the messages I have received today. Incredibly happy to have shared the past 14 years of experiences with you. Thankyou again for all the support down the years. Now really excited to get going @TourofBritain
In the end my race turned into 1 against myself to just get to the top as fast as possible. Incredible experience to ride most of #alpedehuez alone. Just didn’t have the strength left to follow the group. Thankyou for the support #keepfighting
Dear @UCI_cycling How about we think about banning this new descending technique of sitting on the top tube. Pro riders may have the skills but how many kids at home will endanger themselves attempting to imitate what they see on TV.
To the guy who stole my garmin off my bike when I was picking myself up off the floor yesterday; please send the training file to @doctorinigo My @TrainingPeaks needs to be updated
Feels like a lion has been clawing at my back but seems I am ok. Makes tomorrow’s stage even tougher but when have I ever walked away from a challenge.
Have been thinking about the whole TJV vuelta situation and it feels like insecurities in team hierarchy surfacing from 2 egos wanting to keep their loyal helper in his place. And the nice guy being too nice to complain just, gets on with it.
To all the riders @LeTour Remember this is the last time you won’t have sore legs for a very long time. But it’s worth it. There’s nothing like the emotions you go through at Tour de France. Enjoy every kilometer of every stage. #ViveLeTour
From @lavuelta to the biggest challenge of my life. Hard to explain the mixed emotions leaving my @TeamUAEAbuDhabi boys behind but my teammate for life @JessMartin_7 needs me now as we set off on the most exciting adventure we could ever have imagined. 1/2
Genuinely emotional watching @BobJungels take that win. One of the nicest guys you can meet. We became good friends when teammates and I know what he’s been through the last few years. So happy for you mate. You kept believing. Enjoy.
Always amazes me how many people spend hours on the side of the road waiting for @LeTour to pass. Even more amazing that when we finally get there many look the other way and wave at a helicopter or run off the other way chasing a thrown bottle
“My warmest congratulations to @DanMartin86 on his outstanding performance in this year’s #TourdeFrance, and on winning the award for the race’s ‘most combative’ rider. His performances will give great encouragement to all Irish riders.”
Thanks to yesterday's victory, @danmartin86 achieved the milestone of becoming a stage winner at all 3 Grand Tours

Team Sky were much less dominant and faced constant scrutiny and let’s face it, abuse. Now we have a superior Jumbo conquering all being applauded. I’m not skeptical and find the belief refreshing but what’s caused this change in attitude and lack of questioning/doubt?
Surely it would make more sense to help smaller budget teams get more money than to restrict income into the sport. Compared to football and formula 1 cycling is already a poor relation. More start money to smaller teams perhaps?
1 of my earliest Tour de France memories is sadly seeing Fabio Casartelli lying motionless on the descent of Col de Portet d'Aspet. After racing past the memorial numerous times, I finally took the opportunity to stop and pay my respects. RIP Fabio. #tdf2018#recon
As for me. Calm before the storm. Huge weekend ahead. Setting out to enjoy it. Anything from now is a bonus. Love these mountains though and excited to be back racing on Farapona and Angliru
19months old tomorrow and starting to see how observant our twin girls are. They point at the coffee machine and say ‘dada’ and point at the wine fridge and say ‘mama’ 😂
After a few weeks of helping @JessMartin_7 grow her bump, here I am at the start of @lavuelta a race that’s been so good to me in the passed. Hoping for more of the same this week and of course I will attack. If I have the legs that is
Did not expect the race to explode like that today. Luckily the legs were good. Will make tomorrow even more difficult but so excited to race up @alpedhuez@IrishCorner10 and all the craziness that comes with the 21 hairpins
Ok what do I know. Cycling doesn’t make sense to me anymore. That’s why I retired 😂 But what an amazing show. Whatever happens now. The collateral damage for tomorrow will also be huge.
1 of the first guys to congratulate me after stage 6 was @alafpolak I told him it was his turn.
Very happy to see him get the first of surely many TDF stages. Congrats
Hiked up pic de Carroi from home. Considering starting a petition for it to be paved although perhaps wait until I have retired 🙈 5km average 16% and no idea how steep the final ramp is
The fact the TV coverage starts at 930am and finishes 1710 kind of brought it home that there is quite a long day ahead tomorrow. I better get some sleep #worlds
Thanks for all the good luck messages so far. Going to be a rollercoaster 3 weeks. Tricky first 9 days then some of the hardest stages I have ever seen in the @LeTour May the best man win.

Thanks to my teammates and @TeamUAEAbuDhabi for the support and understanding that family always comes first. I wish the guys the best of luck in the next 2 weeks of racing.
Was wondering today if people will ever stop calling me Tony. But after talking to @tonymartin85 it seems he gets called Dan all the time. I guess we do look alike. Kind of. Not really
It seems fitting that we leave this beautiful sport the same season.
@nicholasroche played a huge role in my career. Thanks for everything and congratulations on one hell of a ride.
Flashback to a conversation I had with @matmohoric during @LeTour last year. ‘I have a kid now so I’m less crazy on downhills’.
Definitely demonstrated lower risk tolerance on Saturday 🙈
The irony that with the big 2 being so equally matched on the climbs, @LeTour could be decided by the fact Pogacar spent 5 weeks only training on his TT bike due to his wrist fracture.
Busy week here @dauphine and I forgot to share this with you. Slightly 2nd hand @campagnolosrl Somebody armed with a screw gun in the peloton? Never seen this before
Really excited to announce the release of my autobiography. A lot of energy and heart have gone into these words that I hope you will all enjoy geni.us/ChasedByPandas
I 100% support @tom_dumoulin comments on the final yesterday. No rider should ever be blamed for drafting. There must be research done to explore the distance a moto needs to be to avoid an advantage. Congrats to @rogla The strongest yesterday and deserved to win.
Thanks a lot to my @TeamUAEAbuDhabi for giving it everything to limit the losses today. Took me a while to pedal circles again and to add insult to injury, the commisaire made a barrage and pulled the cars out but we never give up. Tomorrow another fight
1 whole year has passed since I somehow managed to win stage 17 of the @giroditalia Where does the time go? Incredible memory and not a bad ‘last race I won was . . . . ‘
7 weeks till publication of my first book Chased by Pandas and things really hectic. Reading final proofs, adding the finishing touches before it’s off to the printers and finalizing a publicity schedule. Scary but exciting hachette.co.uk/titles/dan-ma…
Stage 2 @LeTour will be a mental battle more than physical. I would take a risk, sit back out of trouble the first 150km. Rather be behind a crash than in it. Conserve as much energy as possible until the final 50km when you need to be right up front. #IfiwasthereTour
I think @UCI_cycling should be applauded for being proactive for once. Too often rules are implemented reacting to serious injuries or worse. Riding helmetless is perfectly safe, until you crash and hit your head. The barriers in Poland were ‘safe’ for 12 years. Just 2 examples.
Whatever happened to uphill sprints in @LeTour? I’m talking those 1km long 6-7% finishes. Imagine the battle royales we would see with MVDP, Van Aert, Girmay, Pidcock, DeLie and even the GC guys getting involved. So many flat straightforward sprints this year.
Budget caps would make sense for national teams but why penalize a privately owned team who successfully convince a company to invest heavily in return for greater exposure. How many teams are currently backed by companies who are household names globally?
Clearly it’s impossible to predict wind conditions months in advance. But I do think long stages have a place in cycling. Different length stages suit different riders and all adds up to a complete final gc winner. Boring yes but also tiring in a different way to short stages
