Paul Johnson, author and journalist, died this morning after a long illness at the age of 94. He is survived by Marigold, his three sons and daughter, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. May light perpetual shine upon him and may he rest in peace.

I wrote this piece about Kemi Badenoch in March 2019, urging her to stand for the leadership. Now, battle-hardened in the culture wars, she has done so — and Michael Gove has endorsed her as “brave, principled, brilliant and kind”. He’s right. Go Kemi! thearticle.com/why-kemi-bade…

My father Paul Johnson’s longest and most original book, “The Birth of the Modern: World Society 1815-30”, explains in detail how and why this happened. In 30 years, no historian has improved on his work, but the academic fraternity still ignores it.

Attali speaks with the benefit of hindsight. At the time neither Mitterrand nor anybody else saw the fall of the Wall as “inevitable”. The French were as astonished as the Americans, British and the Germans themselves. But Mitterrand liked to pose as the omniscient intellectual.
Fascinating Jacques Attali interview on Mitterrand's approach to fall of Berlin Wall. It was not a big deal as Mitterrand knew it was inevitable and Gorbie had said Russia would never open fire on demonstrators. lepoint.fr/politique/jacques… @anneapplebaum @DanBJohnson @annemcelvoy

Kemi Badenoch has just revealed that when she was in charge of candidate selection for the Tory party, she booted her husband Hamish off the list, rather than risk any conflict of interest. Kemi as PM could be trusted never to abuse power or patronage.
