INTEGRITY IS NOT SITUATIONAL
After a heated loss in '21-'22, soph. Jamal Shead cleaned up the mess his teammates caused. 2 years later he was Big 12 P.O.Y on nation's #1 team.
How you do anything is how you do everything.

DISCIPLINE IS A WAY OF LIFE
This entire clip from Coach Saban is pure gold. Discipline is everything. Every player should watch this clip understanding how they do drills in practice, how they warm up, or do anything is a mentality. It can't be turned on or off.
GET THE RIGHT GUYS ON THE BUS!
"Mediocre people don’t like high achievers and high achievers don’t like mediocre people ... Get the right guys on the bus, get them in the right seats, and get the wrong guys off the bus."

UNSEEN HOURS
Here's a small glimpse into why the best are the best with Caitlin Clark's off-season workout.
Everybody says they want to be great but not everyone is willing to do what's necessary to be great. Greatness doesn't just happen, it's earned.

Kobe Bryant worked like he had no talent, then he played like he believed he was the best player in the world. Prepare with humility; perform with confidence.

LAZY vs. HARD WORK
"Lazy people do a little work and think they should be winning! Winners work as hard as possible and still wonder if they are being lazy!"

KIRBY SMART ON BEING GREAT
"There's one way. The right way. The hard way. There are no shortcuts.
At 7:30 when the alarm goes off ... if you wanna be a really good player, you're gonna get up and go to class.
You've gotta do something that somebody else isn't willing to do."
DEVELOPING MENTAL TOUGHNESS
"You get mental toughness because things are hard. You've got to embrace hard.
Tough times make hard people. Easy times make soft people...
You've gotta learn to overcome things that are hard." (Nick Saban)
COST ASSOCIATED WITH LEADERSHIP
"Have to make hard decisions that'll negatively affect people you care about...
Be disliked despite your best attempt to do the best for the most...
Be misunderstood and not always have the opportunity to defend yourself."
~ Kirby Smart
MIKE LEACH ON EMBRACING HARD
"Nothing is really fun unless it's hard ...
You're pushing yourself. All of a sudden you're making great plays.
You're doing things that you've never done before...
Never hope that it's easy."

SARK ON CULTURE
"It is not a sign in your building. It's not a t-shirt you wear. It's not breaking the team down & saying Culture on 3 ... Who you are some of the time is who you are all of the time."
Culture is lived out on a daily basis.

AVERAGE PLAYERS take games seriously.
GOOD PLAYERS take practice & games seriously.
GREAT PLAYERS take academics, nutrition, warm-ups, ind. work, weight room, conditioning, film, practice & games seriously.

NICK SABAN ON BLESSINGS
“Do you pray to be blessed or do you pray to be a blessing? … Never miss an opportunity to tell people how much you appreciate them. There’s nothing that makes a person feel better about themselves than when you say I APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO!"

YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
“I was a backup quarterback on a 0-8 freshman high school team, and I didn’t play. We didn’t even win a game and I couldn’t even play.” (Tom Brady)
Being coachable means you're willing to consider feedback even if you don't like what you hear. It means resisting the urge to make excuses or get defensive when challenged. Getting better is more important than your ego. You'd rather get it right than be right.
PLAYERS: If you are the most talented player on your team, you should also be hardest worker on the team. Lead by example. Set the standard. Be the standard.
PARENTS: When you blame other things (officials, coaches, conditions, circumstances, teammates) for the situation your son or daughter is in, then you're essentially teaching your child how to be an excuse maker. Set the standard. Be the standard.
DEVELOPING MENTAL TOUGHNESS

HOW YOU PRACTICE IS WHO YOU ARE
"How you practice is who you are. Nobody wants a complainer. I want somebody smart, tough, fast, disciplined with character." @DeionSanders
"We're such an instant gratification era ... We're trying to skip the step of adversity and growth ... but we're gonna have to face it.
Sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side. Sometimes you're just trading one set of problems for another."

PLAYERS: When you become a "whatever the team needs" type player then you become a great teammate and your team's culture is strengthened. Great teams have great teammates.
MICHAEL JORDAN WORK ETHIC
“Every day in practice was like that to me. It was a competition.
So, when the game comes, there’s nothing that I haven’t already practiced. It’s a routine.
Whatever happens in the game now, okay I’ve done that before.”
University of Louisiana baseball coach Matt Deggs on advice he'd give young coaches.
This is a good listen no matter what sport you coach.

RESPONDING TO MISTAKES
"I'm letting the team down because I turned the ball over ... missed a shot ... blew a defensive assignment. No, you're letting the team down when it parlays into 4 or 5 possessions after that.
Pick yourself up... You're playing a game that's imperfect."

PARENTS: Don't build your happiness around your kid’s athletic performance. If you get in a bad mood because they played bad, take a break from the game. Your kid needs to have tough performances to learn, not have great performances to make you feel good.

KIRK HERBSTREIT ON PARENTING
"I'm cool with my kids failing... It's part of the process. Every day there is adversity... They have to learn how to deal with junk... It's okay to make a mistake. Get back up and let's keep going forward."
~ @KirkHerbstreit@thewinningdiff1
PLAYERS: College coaches learn about recruits by watching more than just the game. They pay attention to body language. They watch pregame warmups. They observe you talking w/ people before & after. The best teams want people who are good fits and not just the most talented!
PLAYERS: You are never a neutral teammate. You are either making things better or making things worse on your team. You are either helping your teammates or not. You are either encouraging or not. You are either providing a good example or not. Great teams have great teammates!
GREAT TEAMS HAVE GREAT TEAMMATES.
✅ Bring energy whether they're playing or not.
✅ Find ways to be in the game even when they aren't in the game.
✅ Create momentum.
✅ Are just as excited about a teammate's success as they are their own.
