It just hurts the devs of smaller games. The thing is you have to check the thing that shows "product refunded" so idk if they did this to troll me or what 🥲
Also don’t think a degree magically gets you a job, make a YouTube channel and start making videos. No one that hires you will care about a degree they will just want to see your work.
I removed jump buffers (not worth my sanity fixing it)
But yeah the movement is there, I guess I proved myself I can do it? But is this a game, No... Not even sure what it could turn into but I can get it off my mental for now.
If you ever feel bad that your game didn’t sell just remember this.
You are ONE person who made an entire game.
AAA and Indies need LOTS of people to finish a project. You didn’t.
The fact that you finished is amazing. Don’t give up. If you finished 1 game you can do it again
-Be mostly a programmer
-Realize mediocre art is not good enough to sell games
-Spend hours trying to make cuter models
-Still look worse than your low effort stuff
Wtf man? lol
I’m not sure what happened to me but I’ve completely lost my will to make games. It may be due to unmet expectations or the fact that my day job revolves around using Unreal. But I lost the spark.
Perhaps I’ll get back to it, but I just find it hard to even open the engine.
Well I've hit that point again, I prototype 2-3 cool mechanics, and I try to build a level and its not fun at all, plus its so ugly. Not sure what to do next. I either have to change the scope altogether or do something else with this idea... 😥
I was working on a character for a game, but I genuinely can't stand my own texture work, it makes me want to cancel the project. Maybe I can release this model on itch for someone to use?
Update:
I know this is super boring but we need to normalize the fact that gamedev is not all sunshine and rainbows.
After over a week, I have functional UI navigation on both mouse and gamepad ☺️
Probably my last post about the game, so forgive my boasting. But we are #11 in Horror on the whole of steam. Right next to Outlast, Chillas Art, or the Forest.
UNREAL TO ME 🤯
My PC out of nowhere decided it does not wish to boot up anymore. So I lost all my projects and code I’ve written in the last 3 years.
On the bright side I guess my next pc will have a clean desktop 🥹🥲
As much as I love retro 3D graphics I think it’s a liability if you want to make money on games. There’s only so few people to appreciate that style and most people will just say your game is ugly
The more I do game dev the worse I feel like I’m getting. Like when I first started out I would make stuff so fast and now I’m constantly struggling adding basic features.
Perhaps I’m being too ambitious but it’s becoming extremely discouraging.
Here is a little tip for all you gamedevs who don't want to burn out. Do all the UI/Menus/Saving/Loading early. Just do all the boring stuff so you can actually avoid that "last 10 percent of the game takes 90 percent of the time" saying.
If a million people think DS1 is the best, I’m one of them.
If 5 people think DS1 is the best, I’m one of them.
If 1 person thinks DS1 is the best, that’s me.
If no one thinks DS1 is the best, then I’m dead.
I have been working on this model for a few days now. Hopefully it can be part of a game. To be honest I am quite happy with the way its looks =)
512px texture, 16 colors, 345 tris
Am I the only one that noticed that we don’t get games for kids anymore?
Say the 5th gen era every other game was some adventure platformer or something close.
You can say now we still have stuff like Zelda but comparing OoT and TotK is like comparing a baby to an 18 year old.
-Sick game trailer drops
-Wishlist on Steam!
-coming soon for 3-4 years
-lose interest…
This is the case for like 50% of the games on my wishlist, why not drop the trailer closer to release? Like people who wishlisted years ago might not even play games anymore lol
After sort of lurking from the sidelines recently, I browsed next fest today and realized that:
The barrier of entry to make a game is so low that we get 2x more games but 2x less quality games.
If you are a talented game dev you’ve got nothing to worry about.
Any child can go watch porn with no problem. But because there’s an ad on a LEGO animation or a toy review, the government basically wants to censor all of that to “keep the children safe” lol!!! I think the only thing that could save YouTube is a MLK jr type protest... #coppa
Final Improvements!
-Improved chainmail texture
-Added Neck chainmail
-Made a black outfit that may be unlocked later in game???
I think it looks much much better now!
I work full time and pretty much solo parent most of the time too. The fact I even try to make games is what I’m proud of.
So many people waste their free time, I try to literally squeeze as much of it as I can.
However I don’t recommend this because it takes a toll on you.
As an indie dev, I know it will be much harder to find success (simply cause these ai games will take up any little exposure us small guys get)
But I will keep making games as art and share them with the world.
I have this weird theory that like 50% of indies price themselves out of success.
Games that are more than like 10$ are hardly affordable to most people.
Lower prices, mean more potential buyers, meaning more reviews and word of mouth.
FLASHING IMAGE WARNING!
This model took 9 hours so I had to condense it to twitters 2 minute video rule. Overall you can get the gist of how I model and texture.
I want to share a tiny easter egg in my last game, the computer in Please Stop Crying is actually showing one of my other games =D I always wanted to do something like this in a game haha!
I don't know how people have plenty of ideas for games. I am in a valley of drought. I mean I have ideas, ideas that will sell 12 copies and are not worth my time. Or ideas that will take 4 years to make... I need to stop being a perfectionist.
Yeah, I don't think I can get the demo out by December. I can barely work on this game, and when I do I barely get anything done. Honestly if I even make this game at all it will be a miracle to me.
Sooo my demake blew up recently (25k views in the last week).... But anyways if anyone liked this, I am letting you know my current project uses like 90% of the same code, but it's all been improved on =)
I don’t think it’s a hot take. This was just a meme I made because I was feeling discouraged. But if one of my games made some significant money I would absolutely drop every other job I do and keep making more games as long as I can :)
The character is game ready =) now I just gotta pick the game 😅
I could do a 3-4 hr Soulslike/Metroidvania or
I was thinking some kind of roguelite brawler....
I need ideas and suggestions haha
The thing about making a dream game is that a possible flop would be very devastating for the self esteem. And I think deep down a lot of people feel that way.
I work a normal job where I make software for this company. Recently I had to deploy an exe that had to get approved by IT, and safe to say after interacting with IT for a week:
Update #3
The ssd with all my stuff was fried :(
But we managed to get the pc to turn on.
After redownloading all my programs I’ll have a clean slate, and my latest project is backed up in drive so it’s not the end of the world ☺️
First of all she said "has to be taller than me" well lets be honest she's like 5'4 at most so most guys will be...
And second of all she looks quite fit so I don't get how the scale would prove anything lol...
