As I embark on the next stage of my news coverage, wanted to let folks know that I have a public email now - hofferttrpg@gmail.com. Send me tips, PR, or just say hello!
All this man wants to do is talk about Warhammer with someone. The disappointment when he discovers that the interviewer isn't versed in Warhammer and his request to talk with the dude who came up with the question is hilarious.
My Cat: REMEMBER THE PACTS FORGED BETWEEN OUR PEOPLES LONG AGO.
Me: Stop it, it's 6 in the morning.
Cat: YOU PLEDGED ETERNAL SERVITUDE.
Me: I did not.
Cat: IN EXCHANGE WE WOULD COME TO YOUR AID IN YOUR HOUR OF NEED.
Me: I'm not feeding you.
Cat: REMEMBER THE PACTS.
Hasbro's new version of Clue officially comes out today and I look forward to a generation of kids pointing to the new Chef White as their sexual awakening.
New Wizard character art from the 2024 Player’s Handbook by Billy Christian. Each class gets a big key art page, all 48 subclasses also get artwork in the Player’s Handbook.
Seems that @DnDBeyond's Subscription Management page is down as a movement grows to cancel subscriptions to protest reported OGL changes. This comes up when you try to use the Subscription Management page.
My D&D group deserves nothing, except for emotional pain and the slow realization that every bad choice they've made in the campaign will come back to haunt them in the end.
For the record, I have interviewed various Critical Role cast members for like two years and every time I asked about the Mighty Nein, they looked increasingly like the cat who ate the canary.
Folks laid off at Wizards of the Coast include:
Dan Dillon, game designer
Mike Mearls,
Chris Lindsay, who helped architect the DMs Guild,
Liz Schuh, head of licensing and publishing for D&D
Bree Heiss, art director for D&D
Natalie Egan, product manager

I see that some people are apparently upset that Dungeons & Dragons is introducing a magical school setting for Fifth Edition because it's a mandatory campaign that everyone has to play through or else Wizards of the Coast confiscates your Player's Handbook and dice.
Behold: the re-design of the gold dragon for @Wizards_DnD's 50th anniversary. I had a deep dive with @DroidsForSale about what went into reinventing one of the iconic creatures of D&D. Link in the subsequent tweet:
Cannot wait to get tapped to interview Henry Cavill during his Superman 2 movie press tour so I can ask him 20 minutes worth of mini painting questions and his thoughts on hard plastic Horus Heresy miniatures.
Weirdos, mad about D&D art: THERE’S NO SUSHI in my EUROPEAN FANTASY GAME.
Actual D&D players: I need gold to finance resurrection spells. DM, what do I need to roll to open a food truck with a cuisine not found in this city have never eaten so I can build a capitalist empire?
"First of all, I do not use artificial intelligence (NOT AI) for my work and no one but you and my director have asked me." Nestor Ossandón said in an email to me. "And that image is completely painted. It is one of my favorite recent jobs that I have been able to do." (cont)
Ancient Copper Dragon redesign for the 2024 Core Rulebooks. Note the longer beck, the change in the green copper coloring, the white underbelly, and the changes in spikes on cheeks and chin. Art by Svetlin Velinov
Me: "Here's what Hasbro said during their investor call."
Someone on this here website: "What's your source?"
Me: THE SOURCE IS ME AND MY EARS THAT HEARD CHRIS COCKS SAY THESE THINGS AND MY EYES THAT READ THE FUCKING FINANCIALS.
Have a statement from Wizards over the AI enhanced artwork in Glory of the Giants. To summarize, they were unaware of the use of AI until the story broke and the artwork was turned in over a year ago. They are updating their Artist guidelines in response to this.
I did not receive a review copy of Clue, so I cannot confirm whether "Stepping on Me" is now a potential weapon. Gonna presume so until stated otherwise.
It is hugely disappointing that the writer of a line of popular D&D books is sharing memes that attack one of the key franchises that led to the game's resurgence and likely helped contribute to him getting a new book deal.
There are rumors and speculation that One D&D will be "paywalled" entirely or mostly behind D&D Beyond, with no physical copies of the new book. At this point, I'm not disbelieving anything but I can only imagine the riots from FLGS owners if they roll something like that out.
So, @mattcolville just said on Twitch that @helloMCDM will start working on its new TTRPG next week. Described as cinematic and tactical, will have an open license.
In very important D&D news, WizKids is making an adult red dragon in the style of the 2024 redesign. It's referred to as the Red Dragon Tyrant. Comes out in July 2025.
Today in D&D plush news, WizKids has announced a 16-inch Tiamat plush, so that you can better commune with the evil goddess of dragons as she plots her escape from the first level of Hell. She'll be out this November. No retail price listed.
Just as an FYI, I have reviewed the legal documents in question and there is some very sad, very sickening stuff in there. Please be mindful over the coming weeks and months that this involves real people (including folks who have nothing to do with CR).
Some new artwork from the upcoming Spelljammer: Adventures in Space Dungeons & Dragons boxed set, both by Robson Michael. Yes, that is a pie on a catapult. Space Clowns don't mess around.
First big change in the One D&D playtest. Bardic Inspiration is no longer passed around like candy by the Bard. It costs a Reaction to use, but can also be used to Heal immediately after a creature takes damage.
Just to be really clear, the freelancers employed by Wizards to do art for D&D and MTG have all signed contracts prohibiting AI use. Not only would they be breaking that contract, Hasbro would also likely never work with them again.
Penguin Random House is publishing a @CriticalRole anthology of stories in celebration of the show’s 10th anniversary. Includes the following stories, all tied to Vox Machina.
For those who care about these things, the D&D movie is outperforming initial box office estimates. The movie was originally estimated to do $25-$30 million this weekend and it's now on pace to make $40 million and beat John Wick 4.
"And if you see other old works, you can see that my tendency is very similar when it comes to painting. I always play with warm and cold ones on my face. Thanks to the work together with the art director. They give me the freedom and appropriate time to develop it." (cont)
"This character is completely painted from scratch with a gray and superimposed color technique. Then I paint the cold tones to give atmosphere and light. It took me more than two weeks and my director was very happy with this work." WIP pieces attached to these two tweets.
I see the new Daggerheart playtest removed the rule where the Game Master takes a dagger and plunges it into the heart of any player whose character dies.
One other tidbit of news regarding Critical Role - PR mentions that Metapigeon, CR's new production banner, will continue "to partner with talented creatives on a new slate of projects, both in and outside of the Critical Role universe" while developing TV, film, and new content.
Amy Dallen, D&D Beyond host/producer
Jesse Hill, community manager for Magic: The Gathering
Larry Frum, senior communications manager
These are just the folks who have publicly mentioned they were laid off.
Looking back, I am fascinated by the supposed decision to aggressively pivot away from D&D as “lifestyle brand” to a microtransaction-based model built around an unproven digital platform.
It seems so…counter to everything that has made D&D a success in recent years.
I’m curious how Wizards of the Coast will ultimately frame the new version of D&D in terms of marketing. They’ve got a slew of new players who have never been through an edition change and I wonder how you frame the new core rulebooks in such a way to not turn those folks off.
Elon Musk is very upset that the Making of D&D book contains several passages addressing casual misogyny and outdated cultural mindsets. He is responding to an internet troll that incorrectly says that D&D is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
