As I mentioned on @GetUpESPN, the lopsided first-round results were not an anomaly. According to ESPN Research, 60% of CFP games over the past decade were decided by at least THREE TDs, and 20 of the 30 CFP games were decided by double digits. And these were blueblood beatdowns.
According to ESPN Analytics, Michigan played the second-weakest non-conference schedule in FBS this season (home games against Colorado State, Hawai'i and UConn); only UCLA played a weaker non-conference slate.
“Head-to-head is head-to-head, no matter when the game is played,” selection committee chair Boo Corrigan said on Tuesday, “and that's how we look at it.”
Confirmed with both schools. Game on. Bama landing in Miami at 8pm ET tonight, Ohio State boarding plane tomorrow, arriving at 6pm ET. Speculation over. Repeat, GAME ON.
Here’s my question what have YOU ever done to even get a paycheck from ESPN? Most ladies work there way up you just all of a sudden appeared out of nowhere? You kin to Bill Hancock or what?
So ... if the 12-team playoff were today, we'd be watching No. 12 Tulane at No. 5 Ohio State; No. 11 Utah at No. 6 Alabama; No. 10 K-State at No. 7 Tennessee and No. 9 Clemson at No. 8 PSU in the first round.
So … if my sportswriter math is right, Harbaugh will have been suspended for half of the regular season games this fall for two different reasons. Right? Ok. Good talk.
Larry Johnson deserves so much credit for where @OhioStateFB is at ... the defense against Trevor Lawrence started up front, plus it seems as if we forgot he coached them to a win when Ryan Day was sidelined with COVID-19. Looking forward to a great matchup against Bama.
NCAA president Mark Emmert: "Today, sadly, the data point in the wrong direction. If there is to be college sports in the fall, we need to get a much better handle on the pandemic."
The NFL has many serious problems. This is not one of them. I don't understand the Super Bowl's attachment to the roman numerals. Nobody knows WTH number it is, so why can't it just say the number?
. @TexasFootball has already made history in the @SEC becoming the first team to score 250+ points and allow fewer than 40 through the first six games of a a season. Not bad for a debut.
With no divisions and 16- and 18-team leagues and no true, fair way to tell who the best teams are in their own conferences, there needs to be a better and stronger accountability and measure of SOS.
So now Utah is playing at Washington. This is why if you are @BYUfootball - or any nonconference opponent - you hesitate to schedule @pac12 game. If a Pac12 team becomes available, that’s who they play and you get bumped after practicing and preparing all week. Fair excuse.
With Alabama losing, this will be the first CFP National Championship game since the inaugural 2014 season (Ohio State vs Oregon) that did not feature a SEC team. @ESPNStatsInfo
This is petty. I used to drive Joe Paterno nuts every Tuesday, asking him why his QB wasn’t getting any better, etc. He never stopped me from asking, though. And they were 3-9. Hard seasons = hard questions. Colorado bans reporter from questioning Sanders espn.com/college-football/st…
I have Ohio State No. 1 in spite of crap schedule b/c they are 1 of the most consistently dominant teams, scoring at least 49 points vs. Big Ten competition. Only team in FBS that has scored on 100% of its red zone drives. And CJ Stroud makes NFL throws scouts should drool over.
So here we are. Back to what I said to @PatMcAfeeShow about a 3-loss SEC team possibly getting in. UGA is playing in the SEC title game. You mean to tell me if they lose to Texas - a team they beat during the regular season in a true road game - they aren’t getting consideration?
Can confirm Marcus Freeman has agreed to a long term contract extension, believed to be a four year extension that locks him up for 6 more years, according to a source.
Committee chair Gary Barta told me earlier today that the coaching situation at ND has become a nonfactor in the evaluation of the Irish. They talked about it last night, and the continuity there w/ Freeman and retaining staff makes it moot in discussion.
This is where the comparisons to 2014 Ohio State end. That team with @CJ1two finished in the top four because it beat Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten title game. This is not that.
Have to tell you … After winning the @SEC title, @AlabamaFTBL LB Will Anderson Jr. flew here for @NagurskiTrophy AND took an exam when he got here. And they are rushing him back tonight so he can take another tomorrow.
That's it. LSU just put itself in position to become the first two-loss team in the CFP, and two-loss Alabama is - dare I say it - almost certainly done. Georgia created some major separation today.
. @TCUFootball is still No. 1 in ESPN's Strength of Record metric. What does that mean? The avg. T25 team would just a 4% chance to achieve the same 11-0 record vs. same sked.
That was a signature win for Freeman. I was on the field when they lost to Ohio State last year. This was another fight to the finish, but the Irish got it done this time. Turning point?
That win bolstered Ohio State's case for No. 1. Huge win on the road. PSU is a decent team, but they are too inconsistent. Some really terrific playmakers - another Dotson in the making. Too many mistakes, though.
Here’s the reality: I think LSU loses to UGA in SEC title game. TCU loses once if not twice. The top four on Selection Day looks a lot like Georgia, Ohio State/Michigan winner, Vols and Ducks.
. @CoachFick was asked if he could change one rule what it would be … he said stop throwing kids out of games unless it’s obviously malicious targeting
I understand BYU's schedule is dreadful, but two-loss Georgia's wins came against opponents that are a combined 15-22. Auburn only team w/ winning record they beat.
The announcer here in the press box is once again calling a Manning’s name in CFB, while Lee Corso is sitting three seats down from me. The intersection of past, present and future has been a remarkable experience today.
You can certainly debate seeding and other details of this 12-team field, but overall? I’ve never had more fun covering a season from start to finish in my career.
A Big 12 source told me their ADs had a meeting this a.m. and repeated what I told you here yesterday - 14 seems to be their best number. The question is "who wants to be the first to really be a part of the Big 12 now and join us? ... We've got room for one more."
Don't forget about Auburn. The Tigers now have a chance to get two top-FIVE wins in the eyes of the committee, vs. Georgia and Bama. And they could have a win over the Pac-12 champs. Hmmm ...
A source with knowledge of the discussions told me that with clearance at the local level in Cali and Oregon, it’s possible the Pac-12 can return as soon as late October.
I don't know - and I mean this sincerely - that I have ever embraced a college football season like I will this one. Last of many things ... Pac-12 as we know it, Big 12 with its co-founders, Bedlam, four-team CFP ... savor this one, my friends.
I wanted to share this postgame quote with you from @NDFootball@rileyleonard13_ on @NavyFB because I heard him say it and it was so sincere and humble …
At some point, the committee might not consider @AlabamaFTBL loss to Vandy as bad as it seemed at the time. This is a different team under @Coach_Lea that was able to do something @OleMissFB could not - beat Kentucky. Vandy is No. 35 in FPI - ahead of Cal, Pitt, Nebraska, Utah
I will never in my life understand how nobody in the @NFL has been man enough to stand up to Dan Snyder. He is a disgrace to the league, the city and the team he represents, and everyone who has continued to enable him along the way continues to pay the price.
Maybe everyone's New Year's resolution should be giving up preseason rankings. TCU was picked to finish seventh in the Big 12. Eat the cookies. Give up the predictions.
sources indicate a Big Ten response is coming early this afternoon. Michigan leaves at 1 and flies midafternoon out of Detroit after getting through security checks, per usual routine.
I remember sitting in Saban’s office this spring, and he told me they were going “full metal jacket” to fix last year’s mistakes and get back to the top of the SEC. Mission accomplished.
Corrigan said LSU as common opponent for Bama and FSU was part of the discussion. "There wasn't anything we didn't talk about." He said SOS was also a factor and Bama's SOS "was significantly higher than Florida State's."
The past few years I’ve gone to @OhioStateFB I see the same ushers as I make my way to the field. They were so awesome last night post game being my lead blockers … they should get a helmet sticker for that one! It was crazy.
Utah OC Andy Ludwig is a finalist for the Notre Dame OC job. He's arriving on campus soon. He hasn't technically been offered the job yet (or accepted it), but sources have indicated it's a strong possibility. Stay tuned.
How can they play this game? This is so awful for the players … devastating … you can’t give anyone five minutes to recover from that … they have temporarily suspended the game. Just call it.
Maryland decided to send 10 players onto the field for the first offensive play in honor of Jordan McNair. The Terps made Texas aware of the plan and the Longhorns respectfully agreed to decline the penalty.
A source told me that if Notre Dame were to withdraw from the ACC, it can play football wherever it wants. It would have to pay exit fee and grant of rights fees for its other sports.
Michigan did it. They were the most complete team in the country all season, and the most fundamentally sound. There were mistakes by both teams, but Michigan's defense, Corum, McCarthy ... they all got it done. See you in Houston, @UMichFootball
