40 yrs.coach - 20 yrs USA BSBL Staff 2010-'17-'23 /College Nat'l Team Scout. Dad to Kait, Molly, Lily Z /GrandCoach to -Noni, Elsie, Georgie, Sutty, Lottie & ?
NIL, portal, coaches salaries, transfers...can all be traced to 9u teams with walk up music, team moms, Dads in turfs, giant gear bags being carried by parents, and t-ball all star teams.
This is a 1st team High School All American in 2021. It was his turn to vacuum so he vacuumed. No discussion, no argument. He hit .640 with 10 bombs. He vacuumed. He was 3-0 with 3 saves and a micro ERA. It was his turn, he vacuumed. #credo
IMO, Baseball is a living thing. It has a heartbeat and pulse. It may not reward you now, but in the end it will. It recognizes when you respect it, play hard, do extra work, show up early, and love it.
Derek Jeter - 254 errors in 20 years. 12 per year
Ozzie Smith (regarded as the most elite defender of all-time)
281 errors in 19 years. 14 per year
The Jeter couldn't play defense is a tired one.
Why not have every team play a game in a non AAA minor league park. Let people that can't get to in mlb city see it. Charge normal prices. Raffle to see who gets tickets. Give gate to charity. Mandatory autographs. Always next day off for teams. Grow the game & brand.
If your hitters are barreling everything in BP...they aren't being challenged. If you aren't challenging them...you aren't helping them. If they aren't failing, you are.
H.S. Players...keep in mind...if you want to play at the next level, you are trying to impress scouts and coaches of a different generation. There aren't any 18-20 uearvold scouts. Your look, attitude, and play needs to cross any generational gap.
A sad day for high school baseball. @MoseleyAdam and one of his players win a Gold Medal representing the United States and he has been told he will be suspended for one year after being led to believe it wasn't a violation. Absolute travesty. Make it right @AlaBCAUpdates
My 2 cents on 1 knee catchers...I don't give a rip as long as you can catch, block, throw guys out...no knees, 1 knee, 2 knees, stomach. I don't need details of the birth, just show me the baby.
This is my 4 year old granddaughter Magnolia who will come to practice, leave her Mom's side and go sit by herself, eat goldfish, and watch "Coaches Boys". She then tells me thumbs up or thumbs down. Love this girl so much.
My guys lift, run sprints, and yes...run distance. Young hot shot made comment that when was the last time a baseball player ran a mile in a game? I said when was the last time a boxer ran 5 in a match? Ali ran 5 a day. It's called endurance. You be you.
Don't think some players and their parents realize how many really really good players there are out there? You aren't competing with the guy on your team...you are competing against a guy you will never meet. He will be there and you won't.
True story. Early in coaching career. Waiting to play the district tournament. A dad walks up to me as I'm making lineup out sitting on a sidewalk bench, reveals a gun. Says his kid better play in this game. Dead serious I said, "We ain't got no pitching...just shoot me now".
Never forget...that assistant coach you loved... will change when they become a head coach. The relationship will become different and more distant. Assistant coaches are uncles or aunts. Head Coaches are Daddys and Mommys. Just saying.
I was coached in Little League by a man who had no kids in the league. Every coach in the league...no kids in the league. We practiced for an hour on Sunday a.m.and played 2 games a week. 1 uniform. It was awesome.
Baseball is a boring game to watch if you just watch the game. There is a game within a game...many times a game within a game within a game. If you don't like it...UBU, but don't bash what you can't understand.
Are you kidding? Build it. Build it well. Put lights up. He and his friends will hang out there for hours and for years. When he is done...donate to a local league or high school. Investment. Why more parents don't do this is beyond me.
Good teams learn to do labor. I'll go to my grave saying you can determine wins in the spring by how players work on their own field. One of the only sports where kids learn to use a shovel and a rake.
Baseball fields take a lot of work. Our players take great ownership and pride in maintaining one of the best surfaces around. Very grateful to my coaches who work all year on our facility! #BlueCollar
Anybody can show up and hit in the cage...thousands do it daily. Can you hit in the cage and lift in the weight room daily. Can you focus and be detailed. Do you have a plan in both places?
So many can't enjoy playing in high school because they are worried about playing in college, then they worry about playing "pro" ball & can't enjoy playing in college. Then, 9 years of chasing is over, and there is no joy.
When I visit the mound, I usually touch the P chest at some point. I want to feel their heartbeat. If it's pumping slightly above normal & they are making eye contact, they want the challenge. If its pumping hard & and their looking at ground, they are thinking about last pitch.
The ultimate goal of every youth baseball player should be to wear USA across their chest. Just ask the players that have done it. No other feeling like it. #ForGlory@USABaseball
Can you imagine a teammate costing you a possible chance at a national championship because he makes the stop, rips the guys shoe off, and throws it down field?
IMO, Baseball is a living thing. It has a heartbeat and pulse. It may not reward you now, but in the end it will. It recognizes when you respect it, play hard, do extra work, show up early, and love it.
Its happening. I can feel it. So many great dudes who are great coaches. The tide is turning. A wave of positive stuff happening on baseball twitter. Keep the momentum rolling. You be You, but be the force.
"My follow through is up. I was taught to keep the bat in zone as long as I can & that's what I try to do. The longer it's in the zone the better chance you have of making contact." Ken Griffey Jr
Anybody can recruit great players who have high rankings. Are you smart enough to recruit good players who will become great? Players who you can see it and make it better.
It's a really a humbling experience to be able to present at the ABCA. Thank you @ABCA1945 I value that 37 minutes and all the new friends I got to meet. And seeing all my "boys" from all over the planet...The Best. We are Guardians...spread the word. #ABCA2023
Ever tell a hitter to hunt fastballs 0-0 and pitcher throws fastball in a good spot to drive and the hitter takes it....looking for the perfect pitch and not ready for a good pitch?
Coaches...lets do this. When a kid makes a great play against you and call is close and doesn't go your way...lets sit on our hands and acknowledge it was a great play.
Hope all of you are OK with Turner being excited he hit a grand slam to win the game for the United States of America? It's just a travel team tournament and if he offended you...I mean, it's for his country.
Jason Maxwell is one of the best baseball coaches, at any level, on the planet. I've been around thousands of coaches, the way he coaches, runs a meeting, and cares for players is incredible.(He is the good looking one) #ForGlory@USABaseball18U
If you don't know Dan Skirka, head coach at Murray State, you just have to know that not only is he a great coach, but a stud human. Love that dude. The Racers deserve this more than anybody. That's called having them ready to play.
Had a guy tell me he disagreed with what I was doing. I said...might not work in your situation...you have different guys, different style, different opponents...YOU BE YOU. Point is...define what you want and work to find ways to be what you want. Different strokes.
Here's to all the parents of youth baseball players who drive their sons all over, sit there and watch, ask a good question seeking information, and do it right. Be that parent.
For all you "coaches" who's goal in life is to win a 9u plastic ring hating on UT catcher Cal Stark (you're quiet now), the Vols aren't there w/o his skills. Catching 14 different slots, back picking runners, team leader, knows role, and motivator. Know the game, 'cause Cal does.
Catchers... let strikes sit. Don't make a strike more of a strike. Glove movement isn't needed on every pitch. Let the corners of the house be corner strikes. Let stuff on the knees, be on the knees.
The whole system is set up to prevent a team like Murray State from making it to Omaha and yet ole Danny boy lead them to it. Unreal job by the players and coaches. #toughwins
Day 3 of Dude Hunting. As a baseball player, I would have crawled across broken glass for a shot at being selected for a Team USA Baseball Squad. ##ForGlory
Have said this for 40 years...this is the secret sauce. Prep is the key and if you aren't playing, Work While You Wait. You can't over prepare. Difference...I see a lot of guys working, but are you preparing? Are you preparing or wasting time thinking you're preparing?
Preparation is the great separation.
"Every time you're in a situation, I've already gone through it in my head."
You don’t rise to the moment. You sink to your preparation.
Are you ready?
Derek Jeter GOLD 🥇
In today's society, guys with no eye black, sliding mit in their back pocket, who hit a bomb, drop the bat and run are the ones who stand out the most. If scouts were 17, they wouldn't be impressed with the plain approach. Never met a 17 yr old scout.
This happened in a game I was coaching. Umps stop game with 2 outs to go. I said no. Plate ump tells me to fungo a ball to my CF. If he catches it, we finish. I go to dugout tell CF to put a ball in glove. I hit ball over his head. He holds ball in glove up. We finish and win.
This guy was one of 83 that was placed on Omaha Beach on June 5th. 80 lost their life ahead of the June 6th landing. My Father was a scared kid doing his job so others would be safe and experience liberty. This was the greatest generation.
