#BREAKING: In NC Supreme Court race, Griffin has wrongly accused at least 30 voters of never residing in NC, including 22 with a history of in-person voting. With court action imminent, I pulled an all-nighter to bring you this paywall-free story. #ncpolsubstack-proxy.glitch.me/art…
1/4 Not sure who this may help or bring comfort to, but I wanted to share this: In July 2018 outside a Sacramento, California, DMV office, I met Tyré Nichols. He had been waiting 6+ hours in miserable 98-degree heat...
Some major drama is shaking out in NC's gubernatorial race. Sources tell me a CNN story is forthcoming. Robinson's two campaign events today in Vance and Warren counties have been cancelled. Robinson's closest advisers & Robinson himself aren't taking my calls for comment. #ncpol
#BREAKING: Source familiar w/ forthcoming CNN story says revelations about Robinson include him saying things in online chats about liking transgender porn, peeping inside women’s locker rooms while he studied at NC A&T and wanting to own slaves. #ncpoltheog.io/goto?url=andersonal…
BREAKING: U.S. District Court Judge Richard Myers orders the NC State Board of Elections to certify a 734-vote win for Democratic Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs and rejects all of Griffin's election protests. Judge stays order for one week so Griffin may appeal. #ncpol
In 2020, the Dem who lost by 401 votes conceded after 2nd recount (39 days post-election)
In 2024, the Republican losing by 734 voters hasn't conceded and is trying to toss out more than 60K votes through a conservative court 63 days post-election.
These aren't the same. #ncpol
I've seen enough: Democratic Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs has just won, provided NCSBE interpretation of NC Court of Appeals ruling holds. Math is no longer there for Griffin to overcome 734-vote deficit. Still need court confirmation before 100% calling. #ncpol
#Breaking: NC elections officials have removed Mark Meadows, a former NC congressman and chief of staff to Trump, from the state's voter rolls. The State Bureau of Investigation says it is also investigating Meadows for "potential voter fraud." @WRALwral.com/former-nc-congressm…
3/ I'm hoping this could bring comfort to those who knew him well or didn't know him at all but are impacted by the situation in Memphis. I'll remember him as an upbeat and remarkably patient young man, despite navigating a difficult circumstance. May his memory be a blessing.
NEWS: Trump has a big turnout problem in western North Carolina, and it's not just Buncombe County. An #AndersonAlerts analysis shows GOP turnout lagging in most #Helene counties. Meanwhile, Dems in Helene counties are exceeding statewide turnout. #ncpoltheog.io/goto?url=andersonal…
I have a strong sense of what the news will be, but until sources speak on record and/or on background, I can't share what it is. Reminder: Ballots are set to begin going out to NC voters tomorrow, so the timing is important here for supporters and critics of Robinson. #ncpol
2/ His story and those of others that day was the first of what would become 40ish articles from me holding the California DMV accountable for their actions. Nichols unknowingly contributed to setting in motion a series of stories that would better the lives of many Californians.
New: In statement, North Carolina State Board of Elections says candidates have until 11:59 p.m. tonight to withdraw. The state party of withdrawing candidate could then select new nominee. Whether that replacement candidate could get name on ballot is an open question. #ncpol
BREAKING: Republican Court of Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin has conceded defeat in the NC Supreme Court election, his campaign says in statement to AP. Next week, Democratic Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs is to be certified the winner. Story to come. #ncpol

Some very interesting numbers coming out in Asheville region in North Carolina. Through Friday, Democratic turnout in Buncombe County was 6.4 points higher than statewide Dem turnout. For Buncombe Co. Republicans, turnout was 7.2 points lower than statewide GOP turnout. #ncpol
JUST IN: NC Supreme Court has revised its order. It's still blocking election certification, but two GOP justices are throwing cold water on idea of overturning election. Notably, GOP Justice Richard Dietz didn't agree with his colleagues decision to even take up matter. #ncpol
BREAKING: In a 2-1 opinion, NC Court of Appeals sides with Griffin, orders State Board of Elections to recount votes. Voters w/ missing registration info & military/overseas voters lacking photo ID will get 15 days to cure ballots. Never Residents to be removed from count. #ncpol

An update: Josiah Young, who cast a ballot for Riggs, spent his entire childhood in Jackson County. He's a 20-year-old American University student who was studying abroad in Spain during the election. He presently has no remedy to get his vote counted. #ncpol
🚨BREAKING: At least 16 NC voters wrongly labeled as "never residents" stand to have Supreme Court votes immediately tossed. #ncpol

NC Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs is on track to win her race. While her lead would drop under a NC Court of Appeals ruling, the NCSBE's interpretation makes it virtually impossible for Griffin to overcome 734-vote deficit. #ncpol

🚨BREAKING: Huge win for NC voters wrongly listed as "never residents." The North Carolina State Board of Elections says these voters will remain in the count and not have votes stripped. As for other "never residents" in dispute, they'll get due process w/ 30-day window. #ncpol
I'll be totally honest. At 3am on Saturday, my heart sank as I combed through my spreadsheet and discovered wrongly listed "never residents." I've barely slept since and didn't think my reporting would make any difference. At least for now, it has. #ncpoltheog.io/goto?url=andersonal…
A truly miserable 48 hours. On one hand, it's great this has a spotlight. But the sad reality: I was likely too late reaching these voters, had no real advice to offer and my reporting may very well be too late for those who've been wrongly labeled as "never residents." #ncpol
JUST IN: North Carolina recount results are finalized for state Supreme Court race. There was no net change. Riggs maintains the 734-vote lead she had going into the recount. #ncpol#Election2024

1/2: Fact-Check: Gov. Roy Cooper was never at a fundraiser in New York. He attended a New York Times climate summit on Sept. 25. Earlier that day, he signed an executive order to declare a #Helene emergency. Robinson was the lone Council of State member who didn't sign off on it.
Governor Roy Cooper wants me to resign because we disagree politically. I want him to resign because he has repeatedly failed the people of North Carolina.
While he was raising money in New York, we were on the ground preparing for Helene.
He refuses to work with anyone that isn’t part of of his political machine. That is flat-out wrong.
Our only focus should be recovery for the people of western North Carolina.
Rough count from this reporter for those asking: 225 attendees at Harris campaign visit in Raleigh. That includes current and former elected officials spotted. #ncpol
Sen. Natasha Marcus is now roasting her GOP colleagues in farewell message on the chamber floor: "You can't gerrymander all of us out of here. And you cannot stop the slow, certain progress that we know is gonna come for equality and justice for all." #ncpol
JUST IN: NC Supreme Court candidate Allison Riggs has just netted 2,882 votes in Wake County. She currently trails by 2,753 votes. If this holds and is official, Riggs will overtake Griffin by 129 votes, with six counties still yet to report any provisionals. #ncpol

Sanders gets loudest applause of convention: "My heart is good. My heart is full. And my heart is grateful for so many people who prayed for me." #cadem2019
Having read Griffin's 87-page petition, this is as blunt an assessment as I can give on the SupCo race: "He's effectively arguing that an elected group of seven justices ought to be the ones deciding the outcome of the election, not the voters." #ncpoltheog.io/goto?url=andersonal…
California Gov. Gavin Newsom with some praise for Tesla CEO Elon Musk:
"Elon Musk: How about this? I told you a few days ago that he was likely to have 1,000 ventilators this week. They've arrived in Los Angeles. ... It's a heroic effort."
Cooper appearing to allude to 2026 Senate run in #ncgov farewell address, "Every inch of headway we've made demands our continued vigilance. Just as our comeback story was never a given, progress is never guaranteed. We have to work for it... We're not done. I'm not done." #ncpol
1/2: As someone who's covered lots of campaigns and knows Robinson's circle closely, people should be clear on what happened. Today's departures aren't about principles. They're about self-preservation after what many in the GOP came to see as astonishing mismanagement.
Updated with perspective from Robinson. He denies the claims he wrote such questionable posts and is vowing to remain in the gubernatorial race. “We are staying in this race. We are in it to win it," he says. #ncpol
It's official: Six months and eight days after the election, Democratic Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs has her 734-vote win over Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin certified. She'll be formally sworn in at 10am. #ncpol
A truly miserable 48 hours. On one hand, it's great this has a spotlight. But the sad reality: I was likely too late reaching these voters, had no real advice to offer and my reporting may very well be too late for those who've been wrongly labeled as "never residents." #ncpol
The state Supreme Court said 260 ballots cast by overseas voters who never lived in NC should be thrown out in the Griffin-Riggs race.
One problem: @BryanRAnderson found that several of them DID live in NC.
What this effectively means: It'll be at least another two weeks before the election can be certified. This is a major blow to Democrats. Certification was on track for Jan. 10. Now, both sides will make their arguments by Jan. 24.
Riggs declares victory in Nov. 5 election. She views today's order as a win for voters and reaffirmation of a six-month old win: “Today, we won. I’m proud to continue upholding the Constitution and the rule of law as NC’s Supreme Court Justice.” #ncpolsubstack-proxy.glitch.me/art…
New poll from Elon University: In NC governor’s race, Democrat Josh Stein has a +15 net favorability, while Republican Mark Robinson has -20 net favorability. Among women, gap widens, with Stein at +22 and Robinson at -30. #ncpol#ncgov#Election2024
Jeff Weaver, senior adviser to Bernie Sanders, tells me: "There's a tremendous amount of concerns of working class people forced to wait up to four hours. We want to make sure every Californian has their opportunity to have their voice heard in this process."
CNN story is out. Despite Robinson denial, CNN linked username to Robinson. Only difference from my source's account and CNN's telling: Robinson supposedly peeped on women in public gym showers as a 14-yr-old, not necessarily as a college student. #ncpolcnn.com/2024/09/19/politics/…
Story to come. The topline: If this holds, this would almost assuredly result in an overturned election, as Griffin trails by 734 votes and many of these contested ballots are disproportionately Democrats over Republicans. #ncpol

Cooper on Robinson: "I have said for years that he should step down from his position because of extreme positions that he has taken and his attacks on people. I don't think he's qualified." #ncpol
Why this race is effectively over? There's a max 1,654 votes outstanding, according to NCSBE. And it's interpretation looks accurate.
Some voters will now automatically have votes reaffirmed without any action required. And all the others will have a 30-day cure window.
JUST IN: Most of the more than 60,000 voters Griffin wants removed over missing registration info were properly registered, according to an affidavit from the State Board of Elections. #ncpoltheog.io/goto?url=andersonal…
BREAKING: Can confirm Rep. Tricia Cotham, a Mecklenburg County Democrat, will switch parties, giving Republicans a supermajority and dealing a major blow to Gov. Roy Cooper's veto power. Per source, Cotham expected to announce decision at Republican caucus this afternoon. #ncpol

3/3: For context for folks, Wheeler is the same person who launched frequent attacks against former Congressman Madison Cawthorn, contributing to his defeat.
Whatever your politics, whatever your party, there ought to be one clear takeaway from this mess: Everyone deserves to know if their vote is being challenged. And if a voter did cast a legitimate vote, it ought to, at bare minimum, get reviewed before being discarded. #ncpol
JUST IN: NC League of Women Voters and group of military/overseas voters have sued to prevent state from imposing a 30-day shot clock on those who voted in last yr's SupCo race without a photo ID (as had been explicitly allowed at time of election). #ncpoltheog.io/goto?url=andersonal…
NEWS: NC Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs will escalate her dispute to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Meanwhile, the NC Democratic Party filed a lawsuit highlighting its concerns that longtime residents may soon have their votes discounted. #ncpoltheog.io/goto?url=andersonal…
Even if Griffin prevailed in federal court, got wrongly labeled "never residents" discarded, had nobody utilize 30-day cure window, and everyone cast a SupCo ballot, Griffin would still need Riggs to have gotten 72.2% of outstanding vote. None of these scenarios are plausible.
BREAKING: Supporters of NC Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson are at odds over pathway forward. Interviews with supporters, individuals close to Robinson and outside observers show a mounting frustration with the direction gubernatorial campaign is heading. #ncpol

#BREAKING: NC Democrats have broken the GOP supermajority. Having reviewed ballot counts from Vance & Granville counties, I'm calling #HD32 for Democrat Bryan Cohn over GOP Rep. Frank Sossamon. It's a big win for Dems, but House unity is fragile. #ncpoltheog.io/goto?url=andersonal…

Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs is claiming victory in reelection bid. She says in statement, "Based on what we are seeing so far, we expect this recount to continue to proceed smoothly, confirm our win, and affirm the great work done by our state election officials." #ncpol
This is potentially a very big development. Three House Republicans who represent western North Carolina opposed #SB382. If Cooper vetoes the bill, Republicans may lack the votes to override it. And if that holds, it'd be the only Cooper veto sustained this session. #ncpol
BREAKING: NC Supreme Court issues a mixed order for Griffin/Riggs. SupCo says 60,273 ballots / incomplete registration should be counted. Military/overseas voters must be given 30 days to cure ballots. And 273 "Never Residents" need to be removed from count. Story to come. #ncpol
Update: NC Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs recused herself from Griffin petition last night. For now, that point is moot, as issue is now in federal court hands. That's because NCSBE filed removal order this morning, moving case to federal court of Judge Richard Myers. #ncpol
A big yikes for Griffin: "The lack of any notice or opportunity for eligible voters to contest their mistaken designation as Never Residents violates procedural due process and represents an unconstitutional burden on the right to vote." -Judge Myers order
Reminder: From my legal and partisan sources, this case ultimately gets decided based on how fed courts address military/overseas voters who didn't provide photo ID and were expressly advised before election that they didn't need to. #ncpol
