Bitmap Building: Indexing Chat 🟧 by 999 Club + Bitmap News
Here are the key points from the conversation:
*Indexing and Ordinals*
There was a lengthy discussion around how ordinals and indexing work on the Bitcoin blockchain. The ordinal theory assigns a SAT number to each SAT as it is created. However, Bitcoin itself does not understand ordinals or SAT numbers - this requires an off-chain indexer like the ord client to track the 2.1 quadrillion SATs.
*On-Chain vs Off-Chain*
There was debate about what data is actually stored on-chain vs what requires off-chain indexing to access. While the raw data of inscriptions is on-chain, accessing them by inscription ID or SAT number requires an off-chain indexer. Some argued everything should be on-chain, while others said off-chain indexers are necessary for performance.
*TAP/TRAC vs OrdClient
The group compared the TAP/TRAC indexer to Casey's OrdClient indexer. Some were concerned about centralization and control with OrdClient and preferred a more decentralized option like TAP. However, others argued OrdClient works fine and additional indexers aren't needed.
*Building on Bitmap*
Much of the discussion centered around the best ways to build applications and experiences on top of Bitmap inscriptions. Ideas like 3D worlds, games, and galleries were discussed. Some want to build as closely to Bitcoin/Ordinals as possible, while others are open to off-chain enhancements if it enables better user experiences.
*Bitmap Community and Growth*
Despite the technical debates, there was a strong sense of community and belief in the future potential of Bitmap and the ordinals ecosystem.
