Labour is now committed to its section 28 on steroids
Let’s remember: section 28 was a horrendous law that intimidated teachers and others, suppressed the dissemination of information about homosexuality.
It was homophobic and it was awful.
But it did not create a criminal offence.
It did not prescribe penalties.
The Labour Party’s draft bill to ban “conversion practices” is also homophobic. It also sets out to suppress the dissemination of information.
But it is far, far worse than section 28
It will criminalize a parent who says: “No, you’re a boy. Maybe you’re gay. That’s fine: Let’s get you some therapy to explore the causes of your distress.”
It will criminalize a parent who says “No, I refuse to pay for binders, blockers, testosterone. You’re a girl. It’s fine to be a lesbian.”
Such conversations may cause extreme distress. The minor may call them abusive.
We’re talking about a criminal offence of refusing to allow your child to take harmful drugs. Of suggesting she might be a lesbian - not a boy. Of refusing to go along with her insistent demands.

On this day two years ago, in a tribunal case brought by Mermaids - a failed bid to strip LGB Alliance of its charitable status - Kate Harris was driven to tears at being forced by Mermaids’ barrister to defend the definition of “lesbian”. When she recovered, she said: “I’m going to speak for millions of lesbians around the world who are lesbians because we love other women. Once again, for those at the back - and those who haven’t yet understood that this is disinformation: the ruling explained the existing law. The law became the law in 2010 by going through the parliamentary process to make it a law. That is how it became a law.

My opponent in the BBC #AntiSocial programme argued that hardly anyone has ever objected to the presence of “transwomen” (i.e. men) in women’s single-sex wards. We do not want to erase you or remove you from public life. You have the same rights as everyone else. I just watched @BBC 6-o-clock news. In a fairly extensive coverage of Trump’s first day, the Executive Order pardoning Jan 6th rioters was discussed at length. There was mention of the withdrawal from the Paris climate accords, plans to leave WHO, and plans to curb immigration.
Not one word about the most popular Executive Order: the acknowledgment of binary sex and the dismantlement of the entire apparatus of gender identity doctrine that has trashed women’s rights, negated LGB rights, and undermined child safeguarding.
It was this issue, more than any other, that swayed swing voters to switch from Democrat to Republican, and it led millions of lifelong Democrats to stay home in November. But the @BBC - once again - doesn’t think it worth mentioning.

Parents were told - by people they thought were experts - that dire consequences would ensue if their children were not given access to puberty blockers.
Stonewall told managers and employees that “transwomen” were entitled to enter women’s single-sex spaces and sports. It encouraged public and private sector organizations to “go beyond the law” in the hope that this would make gender self-ID the de facto - and eventually de jure - reality.
Civil servants and officials around the country have promoted the message that trans-identifying people should be treated in accordance with their “gender identity”.

All these lies and misrepresentations have caused immense damage.
Some of the protests have been repulsive and inexcusable. But the angry, distraught trans-identifying people we are hearing from were lied to by thousands of people who should have known better. When you’ve been living a lie, the truth is very painful.
The civil unrest - and political troublemaking - we’ve seen is dangerous.
@Keir_Starmer must make a statement welcoming the Supreme Court ruling and strongly affirming his party’s commitment to the rule of law.

When Stonewall was warned by SexMatters and others that its false assertion that the Supreme Court ruling was “not yet the law” was disinformation, they changed it to “It's important to remember that the ruling hasn’t gone through the parliamentary process yet.” This is just as bad. What is weird about John Oliver’s rant is not just that he says completely false things about boys in girls’ sport and displays not an iota of empathy for the girls affected. The Supreme Court understood that sexual orientation is about biological sex. It understood that including men (with or without a certificate) in lesbian associations would mean “a loss of autonomy and dignity for lesbians”. I feel extremely emotional about this ruling.
