Full details
We’ve received and authenticated reports from 30 Beeper users who’ve had their personal Mac computers banned from using iMessage. These users configured Beeper (Cloud or Mini) iMessage connection to use their Mac, as per our December 21 update.
We are taking this opportunity to share the results of our investigation with our users.
Facts:
- All reports are from Apple customers who own a Mac computer
- Users were not sharing their Mac or registration code with anyone else
- No warning was given to these users (by email, text or any sort of alert) before the ban
- Apple Support claims that ‘spam’ is the reason for the hardware ban.
- 30 user reports (out of 3,500 users who set up an iMessage connection in Beeper since Dec 21st)
- This is a new change that Apple made since Dec 21, 2023. We know this because we previously used a system of Mac Mini computers to generate registration data for thousands of Beeper users. None were hardware banned from iMessage.
- Apple IDs continue to function normally, and iMessage continued to function on other Apple devices. No Apple ID accounts were negatively affected.
- Starting on Jan 24, we began receiving reports that affected Mac computers were no longer banned from sending or receiving iMessage using Messages app.
If you are affected and your Mac has not yet been unbanned, we recommend reaching out to Apple Support. Please send us a message (via report a problem inside Beeper app) as well so we can document your case.
We have disabled the ability for users to start new iMessage connections from Beeper Cloud at this time.
If you set up an iMessage connection in Beeper since Dec 21st and would like to disable it, open Beeper Desktop → ⚙️ Gear → Chat Networks → iMessage → Delete.
