Self on Silvio: I can be mad at him or say things to him in a private setting that the media won’t be privy to, but if my son or daughter makes a bad emotional decision in the heat of the moment, I don’t stop loving them. He’s ours and I’m proud that he is. #kubball

One of the all-time great redemption stories and classic case studies in sticking it out through adversity is that of Jason Bean. In an era when so many are so quick to seek greener pastures when things don’t break their way, Jason did just the opposite. Thanks to a strong brotherhood with his Kansas teammates, a truly special KU football culture and a coaching staff he believed in as much as they did him, Bean elected to come back and try to change the narrative on his time at Kansas. And, my oh my, did he ever rewrite his legacy. He never could have known it would end up quite like this, but all that hard work, resilience and grit wound up paying off far greater than anyone could have imagined. Critics answered. Narrative changed. Legacy cemented. Let’s all tip our caps to Jason Bean, not only tonight’s MVP, but now the blueprint for the digging in when the going gets tough, and ultimately preserving in the end. #kufball

For today’s broadcast dedication we honor one of our Jayhawk brethren who in the last 24 hours courageously and successfully endured a heart transplant in Nashville. Jayhawk Nation rejoice, @ScotPollard31 has a new heart and is recovering well with his lovely wife Dawn by his side! Dawn described Scot’s new heart as “big, powerful and a perfect fit” and expressed the family’s HUGE gratitude to the donor who they call their hero. Scot has long been a hero to so many in our fanbase, as an outstanding player, teammate and friend to all. He truly has one of the most colorful personalities in hoops history and now, thankfully, we can all enjoy his one of a kind wit, charm and infectious laugh even longer. We love you, Scot! Vince Vaughn could not have been nicer. He eagerly agreed to come back to the locker room to meet Coach Self and the team and seemed genuinely excited about it. Tonight’s broadcast is dedicated to one of our most beloved and courageous #KUCancerFighter heroes ever, Yvonne Adams. KJ’s beautiful mother passed away late last week after a 2-year bout with cancer. She was a pillar of strength and loving support for KJ and his teammates even while tackling cancer head-on. Even after her health took a sharp turn for the worse on Thursday, this amazing fighter held on long enough for KJ to make it home to say goodbye. What an incredible woman and a life so impressively well-lived. Her very special legacy is carried on by @kj_atx and his sisters and she’ll be remembered by the countless people she inspired along the way, including so many across Jayhawk Nation. ❤️🙏💙 Rest in peace, Yvonne.

They say “Game Recognizes Game” and often that holds true. Today what we experienced in the stands at Assembly Hall felt like tradition recognizing tradition. It’s not often we sit elevated from the floor, but the broadcast seats at IU offer a slightly higher angle that put us right there with the fans and one that forces those same fans to have to exit right in front of us as they head out. On the heels of KU’s big comeback, hoards of disappointed Hoosiers had to patiently file out in front of us and every single one had a kind word on the way out. “Big win.” “Love your team.” “Congratulations.” “Good luck the rest of the way.” It was sheer class by the home fans. They couldn’t have been nicer. Perhaps we’d encounter similar grace in other places if we frequently sat in the stands, but this felt different. It felt special. Kudos, Hoosier fans. Not only do you have a special building and rich history, but you’ve also got first class fans worthy of such a program. Much Respect, @IndianaMBB. Hope to see you again. #kubball #iubb

A HUGE thank you to the @Royals organization for the chance to fill-in this weekend in Detroit. It was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream and an experience I’ll never forget. The calls were an absolute blast, but I walked away most impressed by the quality of people throughout the clubhouse and up & down the entire organization. The exciting talent on this team is obvious, but getting a peek behind the curtain at how well they’re run and the caliber of individuals leading them is what has me most fired up most about their future. Thanks to all who listened and to the tremendous crew I got to work with. Here’s hoping The Boys Are Playin’ Some Ball throughout October! #royals

The old baseball adage is, “You see something new every time you come to the park.” Today that something new was Bill Murray. I knew Bill was a big baseball guy but never expected to run into him at the Dillons’ Sunflower Showdown. 🌻⚾️🌻 We talked college and minor league baseball in the parking lot after the game and he couldn’t have been nicer. He even wished me and the Jayhawks the best of luck down the stretch. Perhaps we’ll see some ‘Hawks and Wildcats on his Joliet Slammers roster one day. 🏟️ Congrats to both teams on an awesome weekend of very competitive ball — high level action fit for a tremendous rivalry and apparently, worthy of a Hollywood legend as well.

For nearly 5 years we’ve dedicated our Jayhawk Network broadcasts to KU fans battling cancer. Tonight we expand that scope to include a colleague who is also a dear friend, @SharpeGreg, the Voice of the Huskers. For decades, Greg has been one of the best play-by-play announcers in our industry, masterfully calling games for both @kstatesports & @Huskers athletics. He’s been an inspiration behind the mic to so many aspiring announcers, myself included. Now as he tackles cancer head-on, Greg is proving to be as inspiring as ever. The determination in his words Monday was impressive, “I want to get this thing, whup it’s butt & get myself ready for football.” Couple that motivation with his naturally optimistic outlook & deep-rooted faith, and it’s easy to see Greg is off to a great start in his fight! Greg, you’ve made friends far & wide throughout a legendary career, now please feel the love & support of your pals all across Jayhawk Nation as you continue this battle. Tonight’s call is for you, brother. ❤️

What is “Fitz Magic” at Kansas? It’s 42 regular season wins, 4 more than the previous KU record. It’s 20 Big 12 wins, 5 more than the previous high water mark at Kansas. It’s 20 road wins, 4 better than ever before at Kansas. It’s 8 series sweeps, 5 in the Big 12, the previous school mark was 3 Big 12 sweeps. It’s a dream season for the Jayhawks that should result in Dan Fitzgerald winning Big 12 Coach of the Year. He just took a team picked 9th in the preseason poll to sole possession of 2nd, mere percentage points shy of a title. Fitz’ Jayhawks swept the Big 12 Champs in their house, beating arguably his best competition for the award head-to-head. What a season for Coach Fitz and the Jayhawks. The Big 12 Coach of the Year should go to Kansas, case closed.

We dedicate tonight’s broadcast to a dear friend and broadcast colleague who passed away yesterday after courageously battling pancreatic cancer over the past year: Greg Sharpe, the legendary Voice of the Huskers. For decades, Greg was one of the premiere play-by-play voices in our industry, masterfully calling games for both @kstatesports & @Huskers Athletics. His colorful descriptions and infectious excitement on the mic endeared him not only to Wildcat and Husker fans, but made him an inspiration to countless announcers around the country, myself included. For anyone lucky enough to have ever met Greg, you quickly discovered he was an even more special person than he was an announcer. He was as genuine, thoughtful and considerate as you could ever expect someone to be. Personally, I’ll never forget him calling me to offer encouragement as I pursued my dream job at Kansas, and later he was amongst the first to congratulate me when that dream came true. That’s the type of man Greg was; immensely talented in his own pursuits but twice as gracious when it came to helping others. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Amy, their daughters and the entire Sharpe family. You’ll be sorely missed, my friend, but forever beloved. ❤️🙏❤️

Self had a great line this morning when I asked him if they'd try to shield the team from today's Baylor / WV score: "It's irrelevant. Do you want to back into something or do you want to go TAKE IT? I won't even tell our players what's going on. We're playing to win." #kubball

So proud of @GaryWoodland and inspired by his determination to get back to his craft so quickly after brain surgery this fall. Most of all, I love seeing him use his platform and testimony to encourage others toward early detection by seeking help at the first sign of symptoms. What a stud. We’re all pulling for you, Gary and love the way you represent Jayhawk Nation. Rock Chalk, brother!

So proud of the heart & toughness of a team that showed up w/ only 8 scholarship players & finished OT with just 5. So many gutsy performances to keep the hopes of #15straight alive. This young team grew up before our eyes & you have to hope that pays big dividends going forward.

Self was asked about “sticking with” David this year: “I don’t look at it that way. There was never a question of who our guy was & I think he knew that, no matter how frustrated I get. I’ve said all along he’s the only guy on our team that can get 15 & 10. Tonite he got 25 & 9.”

Two Big 12 hoops legends reminiscing on what Coach Self calls “probably as good a basketball game as I’ve been a part of at home,” - KU’s 109-106 triple overtime thriller over Oklahoma in 2016. Buddy Hield, a 2-time Big 12 Player of the Year, posted 46 in the Fieldhouse. #kubball

“Pay Heed All Who Enter…” Behold the updated Phog. The Cathedral of College Basketball has never looked better. 🙌 History, Tradition and Aura have always been off the charts and none of that was sacrificed in this latest modernization. Still the same charm of the classic old-school barn, but now more amenities than ever for College Hoops’ greatest fans. And oh yeah, Coach Self still wins 95% of his games here. Rock Chalk! #kubball

Tonite’s #KUCancerFighter tribute celebrates the life and legacy of Mark Huppe, who spent more than 20 years as a KC-area high school basketball coach and late last month passed away after an 18-month battle with throat cancer. Coach Huppe was more than just a great coach, he was a tremendous educator, mentor and friend to countless students. He also was a passionate Jayhawk basketball fan who listed his all-time Jayhawk starting five as Wilt, Danny, Jacque, Nick and Jo Jo. Here’s to a life well lived, a profound impact made on so many and a lifetime of supporting our Jayhawks! 💙🙏❤️

KU extends its mind-boggling streak of winning conference-openers to now 31 years. The last time they didn’t win a league opener it was the Big 8, the Super Nintendo had just been invented, Bryan Adams had Billboard’s top song & The Silence of the Lambs won best picture. #kubball

Coach Self introduced @youngoch by saying, “When we first recruited him, we thought he’d be good, but I never would have thought one day his name and number would hang in those rafters… The 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year… Ochai Agbaji!” #kubball

Just a surreal, almost unreal feeling to be packing up & leaving KC early for the 2nd straight year. My heart breaks for our team & coaches who have poured so much into this season. Still excited for next week but please show our guys some love in the meantime. They deserve it.

Self on Ochai: “Folks, it’s too early to be passing out accolades, we know that… but that’s the player in the country. We talked about, ‘Can he be an assassin?’ Well, that question has been answered.” #kubball

Self: David and Juan were terrific… but I think the guy that won the game for us was Joseph. I’m really happy for him and hope that gets him going. That’s the Joseph we thought we would have and I really think he can be instant offense. #kubball
