We had some storms come through Northern Kentucky this past week, and one of our Ark Encounter staff took photos of a double rainbow behind our life-size Noah's Ark. Another reminder of the true meaning of the rainbow: “I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.” (Genesis 9:13–15). The rainbow is a reminder God will never again send a global flood on the earth (next time God’s judgment will be by fire). There have been lots of local floods since Noah’s day which means Noah’s flood wasn’t a local event—it was a global catastrophe as described in Genesis 6–9.

Noah’s family entered the ark’s door to escape the physical destruction of the flood. God has provided another “door” to save people from the coming eternal judgment. Jesus Christ said, “I am the door of the sheep” (John 10:7). In that culture the shepherd really was the door to the pen—they would rest in the entryway, ensuring that the sheep would be kept safe. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is the door through which we must enter to be saved from our sin.
